Aloha, beautiful Hawaii. I am not a rich person but have always saved to travel to Maui, my "go to" place, every 3 years or so. No matter what life brought me, I always knew Maui, and its people, were waiting for me. I am devastated. My prayers go out to all who call that paradise home. I feel as though a part of my soul has been ripped away. God bless until we meet again. Pomaikia'i.
I have a dear friend and her young daughter who live in Lahaina. They are safe from the fires, but the school where she teaches (located not far from the landmark Banyan Tree) was destroyed. This beautiful song and dance bring peace and calm to the soul. I know that she loves the music of the islands, and I will share this with her.
This brings back wonderful memories of a visit to the Big Island years ago. When she picked me up, my dear friend who lives there recommended I immediately tune my rental car's radio to the local All Hawaiian Music All the Time radio station and never turn it off as I drove around the island. I loved it. My heart goes out to the residents of these irreplaceable islands for their losses. Not only people, flora and fauna, but so many museums and their treasures were lost in these fires. But I also learned how resilient and accepting they are of what Life and Nature bring. However we ALL must vow to do FAR better in our relationship with our one and only home planet and how we treat Her. Mother Nature always bats last and She Never Loses.
I lived in Hawaii for three years and was so impressed with the spirit of Hawaii. I also loved Israel Kamakawiwo’ole Facing Future Album. There’s just something about the voices and language and emotions that pulled at my heart.
We lived in Hawai’i for 18 years, it was our home. We had an extended Ohana, with calabash cousins, uncles, aunties and friends on nearly every island. Unfortunately, we were priced out of paradise and moved to the mainland. But, as kama’aina, we love Hawai’i and and try to visit when we can. We greave the loss of life and hope the “uhane o Lahaina” (the soul, or spirit of Lahaina) brings healing and renewal. Citing the motto of my alma mater, “Maluna a‘e o na lahui a pau ke ola ke kanaka.” Above all nations is humanity. 🫶🏽🤙🏽
My wife and I were fortunate to visit Maui in 2001. We stayed in Wailea but drove around and fell in love with Maui and the people. Keali'i is an excellent singer and musician, as seen in this wonderful video. All of the musicians are wonderful and played so well. I love watching Hawaiian dance and Hula interpretations of this wonderful place. Heal soon, beautiful Maui.
Que bella mujer, lo delicado de sus movimientos y la música tan suave y armoniosa... Soy de Colombia y les saludo con mucho amor, que bonito saber que somos hermanos del mundo.
Keali'i always smooth in his singing and always good to see ohana performing with one of Hawaii's best, cousin Aiau you are bless with the music too! Aloha to all of you & mahalo...
The lady dancing is so elegant and beautiful I wish I could dance like her but I am disabled now and the music is so enchanting I have all his songs x debbie
Such beautiful Ki Ho’alu. I sometimes play this beautiful music in the background whilst I'm doing other things, this music makes me happy. There are so many other favourite genres I like such as Cajun (e.g. High Life Cajun Band), Zydeco (e.g. Lisa Haley and The Zydekats), Bluegrass (e.g. The Petersens), Hillbilly (e.g. The Hillbilly Gypsies), Mountain Music (e.g. Mainers Mountaineers), Dixie Music (e.g. The Carter Family), Country Music (e.g. Willie Nelson, Randy Travis, Merle Haggard, Rosanne Cash etc) Australian Country Music (e.g. Troy Cassar-Daley, Lee Kernaghan etc.) Oklahoma Country Music (e.g.The Tractors), Beautiful Indonesian Music (e.g.Ismail Marzuki, Gamelan meets Orchestra), Beautiful Ambient Music (e.g. Fridrick Karlssen), English Folk Blues (e.g. Pete Stanley and Wizz Jones), American Blues (e.g. Leadbelly (Midnight Special) and Hoyt Axton (Cocaine) Big Bill Broonzy (Guitar Shuffle), I also like Reggae (e.g. Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff etc) ... and a polar opposite, I also love Chinese and Taiwanese Music (Jessica Ho, MUSA, OctoEast, Teresa Teng etc.) there are two singers called Jessica Ho, I think one is Korean but it's the Chinese one I like, she sings songs such as Wo Ai Ni. I also like many other singers such as Elvis (e.g. The Trilogy), Rod Stewart (e.g. The First Cut is the Deepest), Fats Domino (e,g, Blueberry Hill), Paul Anka (e.g. Oh Carol/Lonely Boy etc),, Helen Shapiro (e.g. Walking Back To Happiness etc), Max Merritt and the Meteors (e.g.Slippin' Away From Me), Billy Fury (e.g. Half Way to Paradise), Eddie Cochran (e.g. Three Steps to Heaven), Buddy Holly (e.g. Words of Love), The Beatles (e.g. Love Me Do/Hey Jude), Manfred Mann (e.g. Do Wah Diddy Diddy), The Hollies (e.g. Carrie Anne), The Everly Brothers (e.g. All I Have to Do is Dream), The Eagles (e.g. Take it to the Limit/Hotel California) The Shirelles (e.g. Will you still love me tomorrow), Fleetwood Mac (e.g. Don't Stop/Go Your Own Way) etc. and loads more, too many to mention. My very favourite Album is called 'To all the Girls' and it's full of beautiful duets, Willie Nelson and some of the best female singers such as Sheryl Crow, Rosanne Cash. Carrie Underwood, Norah Jones, Tina Rose and Brandi Carlyle etc. Out of all my above favourites, Hawaiin Slack Key is right up there near the top.
She is his niece; her father (Keali'i's mother's brother) is playing guitar at the left end; her uncle is on the right end. They are all family. This song is about his mother.
When I listened to E O Mai yesterday, I though how wonderful it would be if HiSessions also recorded Maunaleo... and true enough, this is such a wonderful performance! Thumbs up guys. Made my day.

I am sorry for your loss of your special place. A dream has been shattered; it truly is soul wrenching.
A song of resilience and connection. May the spirit of Maui guide her people during this difficult time.
I love how he looks at his cousin Henohea with love and he seams so proud of her. Miss Aloha Hula 2009
What a powerful, powerful song in light of the horrific fires in Maui this past week.
