  • Busy episode this one. Finishing fitting the reversing cameras and fit reversing sensors ( should have tested them first) Get the foam and carpet on around the roof cut out. Then it's onto the electrics and getting everything wired up so the Renogy 2000w inverter can auto switch onto pass through when on mains hookup then move back to NE bonded so I can use the RCBO to protect the circuit when just using inverter power.
All in all a productive week.

Just goes to show that perseverence is a virtue that serves well and so far its been fantastic watching Woolfie grow into the family camper he was always went to be. regards and best wishes- Kenny

WOW I bet not many people know this is happening with the inverter. I never but I am now going to do the same as you thanks for finding this problem. Do you know how good the safety is what they claim is build into the inverter when running off batteries and not though the consumer unit? Thanks for all the helpful info you are sharing!!

I wouldn’t be surprised if Renogy tell you the inverter needs to be mounted horizontally. I’ve found some literature from them stating effectively that.

Hi Graham, In Ireland and new to your channel but enjoy the technical content. Can i ask, cause my electrical knowledge is subpar, does this inverter work as it should out of the box, slightly confused by your work arounds, if they were your preference / optional or if this product doesn't work as intended without these interventions. Also why bother using the inverter pass through if you could just wiring a more direct circuit from the 240v hook up to the house 240v circuit?
I saw in a previous video as well that this inverter seemed to be wired with live and natural reversed. What was your resolution there? Was the inverter actually wired backwards?
I really appreciate content like yours, not many people posting with your knowledge or ability to question
    Thanks

Hello, thanks for watching and commenting. It depends on how you want the inverter to work. The regs indicate the inverter should be neutral earth bonded and have RCBO protection. The only company I have found who acknowledge this are Sterling Power. They are a UK based company and you can see they work to compliance with UK regs.
As for the renogy unit it does not work as described to me. It is Center tap, so both the L and N are live. They both carry 115v ish. the earth is not an earth either it is a floating point.
With what I have done it separate the L and N allowing current to only pass through the L side, the N remains neutral as it should. The earth comes a point that can be bonded to the chassis and as such and residual current device can work correctly by being able to detect inbalance in the L and N and breaking the circuit.
The relay I setup up allow the device to switch between my mod and the standard settings to allow pass through. I wanted this to work so as I plug into a mains live supply it runs everything correctly back to the Mains supply breaker and still allows my RCBO to be active.
This all happens automatically with us having to switch circuits.
I wanted a system as safe as possible, I have a mains fridge and a mains emersion heater in the tank. If anything happens to any of the feeds or wiring, the van will not become a big live box, the system will trip and all will be safe.
Hope that helps, best wishes 🤠

@@traveling-taylors I really appreciate you taking the time to reply. So making the inverter neutral bonded disables the internal auto transfer switch. Would it have been possible to wire an external auto transfer switch instead of a relay on the bond you made? After the trouble you've had I'm honestly thinking of not wiring my 230v to any of the van sockets. I have no appliances that require it so no need for a UPS if i suddenly lost my 230v power. My only "need" is for battery charging. How would you rate charging LiFePO4 via external hook up while discharging? As far as I know it wouldn't be any different to charging/discharging with respect to the MPPT, but you actually seem to know what you're talking about 😅.Thanks again. People like you make this whole process so much more approachable and interesting.

@@DaireÓCatháin he has made an external auto transfer switch using the relay, when its powered from mains hook up it disconnects the neutral bond and the UPS works as it should.

well done for finding the solution to the inverter. i did similar last year but with a din rail contactor with a NC setting and the DC ground end connected to the chassis as that is where it essentially goes anyway. can I ask, did your inverter buzz before doing the N-E bond or just since that? A fascinating subject for sure. I suppose that Greg Virgoe will stumble across this video, do that himself to his low budget van and renogy inverter and then take all the credit for it, as usual...😒😒

So when on hookup your 240v is routed through the inverter pass through ? How does that affect the rcd as when on hook up you’ve broke the neutral/Earth bond or does the safety issue only affect when inverting, not on pass through ?

    • @traveling-taylors

The relay i installed auto switches on hookup. That breakd the N E bond in the inveter allowing pass through to use the maind N E bond through the main consumer unit

Graham. Top work. A schematic would be awesome of your switch relay or contactor what ever you call it to neutral earth bond solution for the inverter. I'm looking at the 3000w renogy inverter or inverter charger but both are not earth bonded. You recon also it's best to go the standard inverters and use a separate 240v charger, only risk I see there is having a GPO powered by the inverter and charger into the gpo creating the dreaded inverter/battery/ charger loop. Do you need to isolate one GPO socket to house the charger. The inverter charger is super heavy and not earth bonded anyway but maybe a better option if earth bonded?? Seen jolly UA-cam video part 2 inverter charger install(vandercampadventures.
Love to know your thoughts. Gavin ,Australia. ❤

We actually went to the 2000w inv/chg as renogy assured us it was NE Bonded. You can find the full saga in the electrics playlist linked below.
We now have the fogstar charger although we have never needed to use hookup yet. Driving and solar keep the battery topped up fine. We have to use a small electric heater during the winter for 1 night when the diesel heater failed. That's the first time we used more than 50%. The idea was to have 4 days without any charge in the system. That never happens.
