@edwardcaudill64 He always tells Geoff it's a hobby and Geoff thinks it's investment driven. Also mentioned all the poor advice that was given and many were lost in the hobby because they got burned.
Yeah, I think he needs to start vetting his sponsors a little better. Take some advice from Rob. Its your face on your business. Reputation is more important than money.
Absolutely. I dont go on social media anymore for card stuff that is the best move I've made in awhile i encourage others to do the same. Preinternet days were great
Kudos to you, Geoff, for giving Rob V a platform for his vision. I'm confident he executed it successfully at this bash; I attended Thursday night and Friday and it was spacious, very well-lit, and the a/c plentiful! Very much worth the drive from northern cal and very pleased to have such a large-scale show on the west coast. This hobby has something for everyone; I completely agree with Rob that the flippers and slab suitcase bois should not be the face of this hobby because that model is unsustainable long-term and they will be on to the next shiny new thing (crypto, nfts, comix, whatever) and guys like me will still enjoy finding 5.00 cards in the 1.00 boxes.
For every 2/4 negative people with bad experiances with these two...theres 100 that appriciate the verry hard work they put in to keep the hobby going and give us a great experiance. Thanks guys.
Rob is doing and has done a great job! Keeping the hobby of card collecting and families excited to collecting! I’m excited to see card shows back in southern CA! My wife and I went to the Ontario and this past weekend Anaheim show and they were great shows! Had a lot of fun! And we are looking forward to going to the Ontario and Anaheim shows next year! Keep up the great work Rob!
This is so great to hear and see! Totally agree with where he's coming from, the "hobby" aspect gets lost amidst all the flippers and breakers. Love his outlook and Burbank is a great place to shop for cards online, hope to visit there soon!
rob’s director for logistics is jay and he is a filipino. filipinos are huge cards collectors in the US and everywhere else… ❤ he also mentioned ej. he is also filipino. proud of friends, jay and ej…
I set up at this Burbank show. Table was 600, hotel was over 700. Food was also super expensive, I guess because of Disneyland. I operated at a loss for this show. Not only that, Hilton had strikers making super load noise each morning. So I slept like 3 hours a night. The strikers started at 5:45 am on Friday, 6:00 am on Saturday and 2:45 am on Sunday!!! Nobody disclosed the strikers. Trying to get a refund from the Marriott for not disclosing. I did have tons of fun at the show for sure. Just needed to make more money…
Agreed. Too big/expensive and not enough people for dealers. Anehiem is a tough market. Hard to imagine they will be coming back there. Ontario is a better venue with more affordable lodging/accessibility. We gotta remember the majority of these 'dealers' are more flea market dealers and the cost of show means a lot. Higher overhead means the BUYERS are less likely to get the killer deals. Trickling down to the people not buying. Kudos to Burbank for leading the charge tho. It's just a tough market in OC. Like Vegas too many other things to do and everything seems overpriced including the cards.. collectors know the better deals are in the Midwest for like 70 percent or less of what you find on the east west coast shows.
I’ve been collecting since 1983, sure I buy $1,000 plus cards from time to time but the $1 cards are still the backbone of my hobby. I stopped opening packs around 2007, singles only for me. 1987 Mark Grace Topps, come on Jeff😂 I am really glad you did this interview, I agree with Rob on how to build the hobby. It’s great to see all the kids!
Great interview and Card father Rob’s responses were wonderful and definitely what our hobby needs to continue to grow much bigger! Geoff these sit down interviews with hobby titans are much needed and truly loved! So, please continue to do them, and hopefully you can get some sit down interviews with upper management executives from PSA, BGS, SGC, and big auction houses like Heritage, Lelands, SCP, Memory Lane, Goldin, PWCC, etc.
You could argue that the Burbank card show over the last couple years, could be considered THE National Sports CARD Collectors Convention. If they continue to grow at this rate, I can see this becoming the premier card collector show in the country (if they're not already). The National could be billed as The National East, and Burbank as The National West. Rob has done an incredible job with the show and I think it's fair to say that his show could be considered this. I go to shows and find myself buried in front of dollar bins for hours. Like Rob says, it is totally 💯 a hobby. Folks like Rob are all around the country and I'm grateful for that....this is how I returned back into the hobby after 20+ years.
It is awesome that they are bringing a National size show back to California. People will make the drive down from Northern California, but how about having two per year, one in Northern California and one in Southern California? Nor Cal people are dying for big shows to come back!
I went on Saturday and it was crazy!! I never even went downstairs. Issue was the parking. They were also having an Animation event at the same location, so I had to find a different location to park at.
The current hobby was reignited by the people who collected in the 80s and 90s reliving their childhood, largely due to covid but rob is right...The future of the hobby is in the hands of the kids and cardfather is facilitating that better than anybody.
Great video and awesome to see the industry growing! Wish I could get out to Southern California but I am over in West Virginia. The national was my first card show and I definitely do not want to see it leave this side of the country or we will be left to join the ranks of those who never get to attend a show :-)
I have a new favorite person in the hobby. I'm one of the people that got back in 2020 when my parents made me take my cards back from them. My Cal Ripken collection is mostly $1 cards, same with my chipper and Rickey.
Kudos to Burbank for getting this show scheduled. This is the early phase of having a consistent large show in SoCal. Some changes will need to be made of course and this is a work in progress. Hopefully, a large wax dealer can be at the Ontario show for early 2024.
How many times must we hear this guy talk about how great he is ? Every few months there’s gotta be a new proclamation of the same old stuff. It’s all about the vibes.
He hit the nail on the head with the problems in the hobby. The breaking is a gambling mess. And social media and the grading push has made a mess of things. I logged off social media it was too toxic and too much drama. The hobby shouldn't be about that. If you want to have a lot of fun collecting cards stay off social media. And yes if you want to grow the hobby, the high prices will scare the newbies away quickly I don't blame them. Most of these expensive cards are probably only going to go down a lot overtime anyway.
I thought I was the only one who remembered that this was a FUN HOBBY AND NOT A JOB!!!!!MOST PEOPLE IN THE HOBBY NOW DON'T EVEN HAVE A FAVORITE PLAYER OR TEAM!!!THEY JIST USE CARDS LIKE THERE STOCKS OR CRYPTO!!!JUST ANOTHER ASSET TO TRY AND MAKE A FORTUNE ON!!!
Yea the shift happened heavily in 2018 and now will never be the same again. Its flip and rip now and forever. Collecting days of old are dead unfortunately.

I think the whole rip to flip is going to fade out soon. The whole breaker thing is kool if you are a fan. I haven’t been since it started , I would rather invest that $120+ spot money into a PSA 9,10 of a nice P.C player all day. Do your research, take your time, and “most importantly” have fun collecting.✌🏻

Unions here at places like large hotels, convention centers etc have established rules such as: only union members can bring the booth setup stuff that each dealer needs to the showroom floor. In other words, the union charges to bring your stuff to your booth, and it’s not going to your booth unless you pay them. This guarantees that union members get the work, and you can’t source it elsewhere. Rob, it appears, did not want his dealers and other vendors to feel that feeling of being hit up to do things that cost more money, so he paid the union a lump sum to not nickel and dime each vendor, rather, just do the job and not mention anything to the vendor

It was awkward having to do two floors. Really like what the guys have done with the Burbank show, and maybe they can move to the main building to have everything on one floor.

Rob gets it and will be around long after these”investors” have moved on to the next fad. I have zero interest in who’s flipping $20,000 shiny phony 1/1 cards. It’s always been built on the collectors and will always be. Investors are not the hobby.
Love you both but the cost doesn’t make sense for dealers. Without dealers there is no show. Rob’s bias is disconcerting.
