I know exactly how you feel with the glasses steaming up. I've worn glasses since I was nine years old. But now, at age 69, I'm finally done with them! I had a "mild" cataract condition on my right eye so my optometrist finally OK'd going through cataract surgery, replacing my "bad" viscous lens - the one that does the near/distant focusing - with implants. The eye surgeon that took on my case said that I had possibly the worst corrective lens prescription that he had ever seen. I was very myopic, and had really strong astigmatism. I related that I was hoping to not need eyeglasses any longer after the cataract surgery. He advised me that, if that was what I wanted, the only way that he thought that could be achieved was if I selected the new (they've only been available for a couple of years now) EDOF implant lenses (EDOF meaning Extended Depth of Field) which promise to give perfect focus continuously from around 10 to 11 inches from the eye all of they way out to infinity. The cost would be about $3000.00 USD per eye! Otherwise he could give me 20/20 distant vision in both eyes, or 20/20 distant vision in one eye and 20/20 close vision in the second eye (which he strongly discouraged), but I would still have to carry reading glasses for reading and for any close work. He strongly encouraged me to go the (expensive) EDOF route. And that's what I did. It's been just under two weeks since I had the left eye done - they did the right eye first, then nine days later the left - and I am absolutely happy with the results. I can read at close distance well enough that I have no issues at all in reading the date complication on a wristwatch, I can read fine print perfectly well and see my computer screen and read books with complete comfort. I can also look at distant trees, over a mile away, and see individual branches on the trees! I would advise anyone who has cataracts, and who is apprehensive about the surgery, either because it might be painful or that there might be irritation or discomfort during the recovery/healing process, to not worry. Go ahead and get it done! (And I can go outside in freezing weather and then come in to the warm house and NOT have condensation and fogging on my eyeglasses never again!)
Oh, I re-read my reply above today and I realized that there were a couple of things I forgot to add. So I'll tag them on now: First, regarding the surgery and recovery. It was SO MUCH easier than I anticipated it would be. I can honestly say that the only uncomfortable moment I experienced through the whole process was in the pre-op area when they put some eye-drops in the surgical eye. They stung for about three seconds, at about the level of discomfort of getting a little soap in your eye in the shower. After that, all the way to now, there was absolutely no discomfort. And I was awake during the entire process as I had to be able to follow the surgeon's directions as to "look up", "look left", etc. Of course in pre-op they had inserted an IV in my opposite hand, and before surgery they gave me some "silly sauce", and I wouldn't have cared WHAT they were working on. (Perhaps if you need a colonoscopy or vasectomy, maybe you can save some money on a package deal.) Second, regarding the implant lenses they used. These are made by Alcon in Texas, I believe. They are branded "AcrySof IQ Vivity", and use what they describe as "wavefront shaping technology". They somehow shape all of the incoming light waves into a kind of cohesive compressed bundle of about 5mm in diameter, and present to the retina in that manner. I read a couple of scientific papers that are available for your reading pleasure via a Google search. I found that most of the deeper concepts were way beyond my ability to understand, so I just marked it down to being reverse-engineered from a crashed UFO.
A small hint for riding off road, keep your feet on the pegs and put weight on them...it lowers your COG and makes the bike more stable. When you are seated on the bike, with your feet dangling to prevent tipping, then your body weight is supported higher on the bike and your COG is higher.
When you watch videos of riders who do this every day, it's really easy to believe greenlaning is just road riding on a different surface. Your video shows the reality of it before you master it. Great video and very different from your usual reviews. Cheers Andy

I started taking Maca root as well as elim all oils except ev olive oil to be rid of the whole body inflammation that causes the gout/joint and arthritic pain. It does wonders. Eliminating all sugar and grains/pasta/rice/flour will help tremendously. Love your videos too much to see you struggle sir. Keep them coming.
FYI I ride (CRF300L) in some really knarly conditions and terrain with the ABS on. Mainly because I'm usually to lazy to stop and turn it off. The ABS is nowhere near as intrusive as you might think and it actually is really nice on the front down very steep and long descents.
Yeah it isn't really needed unless doing steep hills in my experience. Going down roads like this would definitely leave it on to help avoid washing out.
That was a vintage TMF comedy bike review. Having done quite a bit of green laning, you demonstrated perfectly what its like when you first start out. So much better than these ex motorcross guys ripping through the woods. TMF is keeping it real!! Nice to start my Saturday with a smile.
As a reasonably experienced on road rider and novice off road rider, I shared your worries all the way along that green lane. Who would think off road riding could be so different, humbling and down right frightening compared with on road riding. The funny thing is adventure bikes like the CRF love it! It’s the rider that has the problems! It does get easier I am finding. But it takes time. Off road rider training really helps. Nows there’s an idea for a vlog.

It gets better the more you do it plus you start to customize your bike to meet your needs…handguards, skid plate, better tires, etc. I found one of the best upgrades to my Yamaha XT250 was wider foot pegs…made standing up a lot less taxing on my legs and I found I could/would stand up longer/more often.

I started riding bikes in the early 60's, when I was 12, on a NSU quickly 2 speed. 4 friends and I put £1 in each and spent the next year or so scrambling through woods where we made our own course. We learned to strip off all the bodywork that either got in the way or broke. Having battered and thrashed it to bits, we got another one with 3 gears and did the same to that by which time I had enough money to buy a Greeves 250 with a Villiers engine and off road forks. That was a brilliant bike and I used to take it into freshly ploughed fields and go as fast as I could, just for fun.. It had a 1 gallon pip tank when I first got it, but having dropped it so many times, it would only take 3 pints. The reason I mention this is because I feel that all of that off roading was such a good training for when I got into bigger bikes I was a lot safer and in the 80's when I started dispatch riding, mainly in London, those off roading skills saved my life more than once avoiding those situations when some idiot either does not see you or is just an A*hole. So carry on building your green lanes experience that will in turn make you into an even better rider and enjoy the workout too.. Great vid..
I applaud you for getting out in the weather. As a denizen of the desert, riding in the rain is something that's very alien to me. I've occasionally been caught in a rainstorm while out riding but have NEVER intentionally set out to ride in the rain. Good for you for braving the elements.

Glad you enjoyed it - and I do wear a contact lens from time to time, sadly I need varifiocals so have to have one eye doing distance (lens required) and one close up (no lens!) - vari contact leneses just didn't work for me.....

Begginner green laner here too (with a CRF). The amount of times i've said "I've no idea how i stayed on there" is quite amazing - its really a great beginner bike for the lanes. I still hate those rutts mind! Great work getting out there and doing it!
I have not ridden in the rain and mud on my 650 (save for a couple muddy spots a couple summers ago on a desert ride - in the sun) so you now have more skills in the muck than me! Well done!
All credit to you , I haven't been off road for st least 30 years .( on an xl 250 ) Since Had a bunch of adventure bikes and last time I went up a gravel road I was a complete Fanny on my vstrom 1000 .. If you want an off roady adventure that isn't too taxing with amazing scenery try Iceland in the summer. I did it in 2011 and came back a better rider. The roads outside of the towns and cities are basically scraped from the earth rather like ours when they put that fine gravel down when resurfacing the roads. On a CRF it would be fantastic a proper adventure in a stunning setting.
Andy, I have similar skills to you and why I’m happy to watch you slither around in the mud. Living it vicariously is, I believe, the expression. Or rather you than me. Great video!
Andy, when I read the video title and saw it was you I knew it wasn't going to be "clickbait". Just when I thought I'd overcome my tendency to schadenfreude. I wouldn't mind but I wear glasses too and have had plenty of "difficult" moments this winter on my bike. Glad you made it safely. I'd definitely get some decent tyres on if you want to greenlane in Winter.

I have an adventure bike, or so the brochure says, NC 750x DCT, on road tyres and did a tiny amount of green laning last year, your description of "this is horrible" - exactly right. Well done for getting it back on tarmac without dropping it.
I haven't the slightest desire to ever go off road, if I get that urge I can go back and watch this again to reinforce my previous state. Off roading for me is the 30 metres from the end of the tarmac to my back gate, and is quite enough. An hour's dubious 'fun' followed by a day of cleaning bike and kit.
Great video again.......we have all been there on greenlaning .....amazing how it does take it out of you, you know you've been on a workout after motocross riding. If in doubt more POWER!!!!
When you ask..."What could possibly go wrong"?...usually results in something going wrong in my world...I did some green lanes in Essex a couple of months ago and you are right..it is very physically demanding!! you did well mate !

I'd love to know how much footage was filtered out because of you swearing! I know I would've been swearing like a trooper in some of that deeper mud. But was good to see what the bike could do with factory tyres. Highly experienced off road riders can make anything look easy and I don't know whether it's their ability or the bikes ability that got them through. So good to see what it can do when being ridden by a road focused rider. Great vid, cheers!
What a laugh that was to watch, I'm a big fan of you and you always make me smile. 7 years ago I lived down in west Drayton and I used to ride a lot of the roads you use. Now I live in East yorkshire and the country roads are great
ive been riding dirt roads for a long time and in rainy season its just normal for smoke to occure when dirt and mud accumulate in the exhaust in wet season its the water evaporating from the heat of the exhaust.
A bit more training offroad is what you need, I find it to be the best workout, gets your heart pumping and with studded tires I can be on two wheels even in wintertimes here up north.
Thanks for a hilarious video, and thanks for stepping outside your comfort zone to bring it to us. (Some of us live for these kinds of gnarly trails which over here we call “double-track” and even tougher “single-track, and to each their own, yeah?)

Good job Andy! I grew up learning to ride off road so I still love getting my CRF250L dirty when I can. Still as you said, it can be a workout, especially as I get older! Glad to see you do this review of the new CRF 300L.
My introduction to off road riding spoilt me as I lived in Salisbury at the time and it very different going round Salisbury Plains! When moved back to Hertfordshire I soon packed it in, the abuse from walkers was unreal, even though I always rode in permitted routes.
Very good TMF. Reminded me of my first time off road with my Yamaha WR250R....it seemed like a good idea at the time but the reality was quite difficult. In the end I decided that the off road tracks available in my area were too difficult for a beginner so I eventually traded in the bike. Glad to see you keeping it real. Thanks.
Good to see you getting a bit muddy Andy ;-) I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm of the opinion that off-road riding actually makes you a better road rider. As we all know, it is not how well you can ride when everything is going smoothly, but how you react when things go sideways - sometimes literally. Anyway, good on you for having a go.
Well done, my off road riding is similar, not helped by my more road biased tyres on my DR350S. Likewise, can be a workout riding it on a short, but wet lane. Made me smile😁
I have plenty on the channel from when I had my CRF250L - sadly my knackered shoulders mean my off roading days are over until I get them fixed (on the NHS waiting list)....

The smoke will be caused by the mud and water flying onto the exhaust
But that would have been steam.....

Definitely an advert for contact lenses - they’ve transformed my riding experience. Well done for persevering I was biting my nails just watching so goodness knows what it was like for you Andy. Definitely above and beyond!
Glad you enjoyed it - and I do wear a contact lens from time to time, sadly I need varifiocals so have to have one eye doing distance (lens required) and one close up (no lens!) - vari contact leneses just didn't work for me.....

Well played sir. And it’s a great example of people saying the stock tyres are worthless being wrong. Sure you’ve not smashed it down there at any speed, which you shouldn’t anyway, but you’ve made it through deep mud with no incident.

Begginner green laner here too (with a CRF). The amount of times i've said "I've no idea how i stayed on there" is quite amazing - its really a great beginner bike for the lanes. I still hate those rutts mind! Great work getting out there and doing it!

I have not ridden in the rain and mud on my 650 (save for a couple muddy spots a couple summers ago on a desert ride - in the sun) so you now have more skills in the muck than me! Well done!

All credit to you , I haven't been off road for st least 30 years .( on an xl 250 ) Since Had a bunch of adventure bikes and last time I went up a gravel road I was a complete Fanny on my vstrom 1000 .. I'll stick to tarmac in future..

You communicated perfectly just how stressful green laneing is when you’re not used to it. As well as the anxiety of “can I go through there? Is it getting worse? What if I get stuck?” 😂😂
There was so many clues why you shouldn't have bothered green laning, But the comedy classic line of the year was the glasses....Pure gold!
This reminds why I only go green laning in the summer on my 250L. "That was orrible", "I can't wait 'til I get home" 😀. The worst part is you've then got to get a the crap off the bike! Thanks TMF.

Go for a ride in the dry. If the bike stops smoking it was water and mud burning off on the headers. If it’s still doing it you know it’s a problem.

If you want an off roady adventure that isn't too taxing with amazing scenery try Iceland in the summer. I did it in 2011 and came back a better rider. The roads outside of the towns and cities are basically scraped from the earth rather like ours when they put that fine gravel down when resurfacing the roads. On a CRF it would be fantastic a proper adventure in a stunning setting.

Andy, when I read the video title and saw it was you I knew it wasn't going to be "clickbait". Just when I thought I'd overcome my tendency to schadenfreude. I wouldn't mind but I wear glasses too and have had plenty of "difficult" moments this winter on my bike. Glad you made it safely. I'd definitely get some decent tyres on if you want to greenlane in Winter.

I have an adventure bike, or so the brochure says, NC 750x DCT, on road tyres and did a tiny amount of green laning last year, your description of "this is horrible" - exactly right. Well done for getting it back on tarmac without dropping it.

I haven't the slightest desire to ever go off road, if I get that urge I can go back and watch this again to reinforce my previous state. Off roading for me is the 30 metres from the end of the tarmac to my back gate, and is quite enough. An hour's dubious 'fun' followed by a day of cleaning bike and kit.

I'd love to know how much footage was filtered out because of you swearing! I know I would've been swearing like a trooper in some of that deeper mud. But was good to see what the bike could do with factory tyres. Highly experienced off road riders can make anything look easy and I don't know whether it's their ability or the bikes ability that got them through. So good to see what it can do when being ridden by a road focused rider. Great vid, cheers!

ive been riding dirt roads for a long time and in rainy season its just normal for smoke to occure when dirt and mud accumulate in the exhaust in wet season its the water evaporating from the heat of the exhaust.
Cold water with hot parts=smoke

A bit more training offroad is what you need, I find it to be the best workout, gets your heart pumping and with studded tires I can be on two wheels even in wintertimes here up north.

Good job Andy! I grew up learning to ride off road so I still love getting my CRF250L dirty when I can. Still as you said, it can be a workout, especially as I get older! Glad to see you do this review of the new CRF 300L.
My introduction to off road riding spoilt me as I lived in Salisbury at the time and it very different going round Salisbury Plains! When moved back to Hertfordshire I soon packed it in, the abuse from walkers was unreal, even though I always rode in permitted routes.

Very good TMF. Reminded me of my first time off road with my Yamaha WR250R....it seemed like a good idea at the time but the reality was quite difficult. In the end I decided that the off road tracks available in my area were too difficult for a beginner so I eventually traded in the bike. Glad to see you keeping it real. Thanks.

Good to see you getting a bit muddy Andy ;-) I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm of the opinion that off-road riding actually makes you a better road rider. As we all know, it is not how well you can ride when everything is going smoothly, but how you react when things go sideways - sometimes literally. Anyway, good on you for having a go.

Well done, my off road riding is similar, not helped by my more road biased tyres on my DR350S. Likewise, can be a workout riding it on a short, but wet lane. Made me smile😁

I consider myself a off-road enthusiast (not an expert). I wouldn’t even hazard a guess as to how many times I’ve said, (screamed inside my helmet)“why did I think this was a good idea”. Yet I’ve made it through those sketchy gambles. No worse for the wear. Andy you did a Top Job of it, must admit this was a bit of a comedy show.
