  • In February 1942, the men of the newly formed British 2nd Parachute Battalion went into action for the first time. In one of the most daring raids of the war, they seized and brought back to England vital components of a German ‘Würzburg’ radar installation. Thing is, these paratroopers hadn’t even completed their basic parachute jumping training when they were selected for this daring raid. It is one of the lesser-known, and interesting stories of the Second World War.

My old Boss, Harold Clark was one of the paras on that mission, after the war he worked for Plessey, where, in the radar division I worked for him in the early 70's.

You fail totally to mention one of the most important men on the raid - Peter Nagel aka Newman, of Commandos and SOE, who was a German Jewish refugee and captured the all important German radar technician to interrogate in UK. He was a volunteer and in especial danger as a German and Jew, of being shot outright if captured. His role has never been recognised and he died in 1987 though his family are alive and well. See his story written by myself on the Jewish Virtual Library (Pete Nagel - Bruneval and St Nazaire) and in my book 'Fighting Back' . He went soon after on the St Nazaire raid as Col Newman's bodyguard and translator, as Pte 'Walker' - and was wounded and POW

Thanks for telling us about this. The raid sounds like a scene that was in the film, "The Red Beret." The navy kept them waiting till the last moment in that film, too, as I recall.

It is based on that, in part - thanks for your comment and sharp observation!

Amazing video. CWH Cox was my Grandad's Uncle. There's a memorial with his name on it in Bruneval today.

Very interesting post, thank-you for making it. I had not heard of this event prior to watching this.
I recognized a few names here, including Major Frost, who played a pivotal role that was shown in the film 'A Bridge too Far' (and played by Anthony Hopkins).

Nicely informative video. I'd heard about this raid myself long ago from a documentary I'd watched.

I enjoyed watching this, an event in WW2 I hadn't learnt about. Though at about 6.25 you've mistakenly shown JU-52s and German paratroopers.

Cameron Highlanders? It was the Cameronians that they were mostly drawn from. A completlely different geographically and ideologically regiment.

Fun fact, American paratroopers formed during WWII, were asked if they wanted to jump out of planes, there an 50$ extra a month in it for you.

How about an episode about Sergeant Hugo Primozik, the Stug ace, who amongst other things destroved over thirty Russian T34,s in one action?

Hey was wondering if you have any interest in doing any videos on Bangladesh and or India

That certainly is the plan. India is a fascinating country I wish to know more about. I recently bought some books on its history. It won’t be any time soon, probably 2020, because I want to have properly read about it before I start a video series. Thanks for the suggestion!

The story is a good one and was the basis for “The Red Beret” with Alan Ladd back in the 50’s. The story of the Flight Sergeant is worth telling too. His name wasn’t Cox and he had no time in the service prior to his involvement. He was a Jew who told his remarkable story after retiring to South Africa, a very brave man indeed.
Why did you throw in such a mix of parachute footage? There were Russian, German and Allied drops shown and the mass drop was likely Market Garden. There are pictures of the first British Paras and of them jumping from Whitley’s. Research creates credibility.

The British Commandos were amazing,no German elite forces ever achieved a successful raid on Britain.

I am stunned that thee has not been a film made regarding this raid, it has all the attributes of a great action film. Perhaps in this yoke era all that are missing are transvestites and gays, this of course could all be portrayed by the English officers ...

    The Germans called for backup🤔
    Soldiers call for reinforcements
Cops call for backup, because they prefer anywhere from 4-10 on 1

Need better editing on the film. Russians, Germans from the bulge, could be better.
