Bran, no! That's not why people say it would've made no sense for Xiao to die there. No one cares about Xiao fulfilling his duty. It's the opposite. Being saved by Zhongli is Xiao's moment of realisation that he's actually a person, not just a warrior. That he deserves his own life, and it's not actually his duty to sacrifice himself for the sake of others. That's the whole point of the quest.
Omg true, and the thing abt his namecard hinting his death didn't make sense to me either coz it clearly shows how he doesn't want to play the role of a yaksha but be free from his duties and enjoy life
it also makes no sense for him to die there because of Yelan. Her whole narrative arc in this quest (though small) was that she had seen enough of people who sacrifice themselves for others to live, plaguing the living with survivor's guilt. Taking responsibility for getting people out of the Chasm was her way of saying "not today, no one is sacrificing themselves this time", and Xiao's death would have been the ultimate gut punch that may or may not have been her final straw.
In the future, I can definitely see Xiao dying in an attempt to protect someone out of his own choice, rather than as an extension of his duty, and THAT would be more impactful.
@@a.v.y8331 I more see Yelan's role in this quest as to facilitate Xiao's arc, rather than being about her. Which yes it can be both, but I think the primary purpose is showing Xiao a different way.
@@bookswithike3256 oh, yeah I don't think the quest was necessarily about her, but I think her motivations and psychology play a pretty big role in the narrative direction, since she's one of like, two or three people in the quest who actually have a driving force and will to significantly affect the direction people take on this quest.
Which means narratively, while we are trying to show Xiao a different direction, Yelan's underlying own motivations play a significantly larger role than others in this quest (Itto's being Itto, Kuki is a bit of a bystander, Yanfei is the glue of the group). It would be utterly unsatisfying narratively to destroy not only Xiao's rebirth arc, but also Yelan's convictions and determination, as that would undermine all the efforts that they made to getting everyone out alive.
On the whole, the quest was about Xiao embarking on a different path and rethinking his past convictions, yes, but remember it was Bosacius and Boyang who created the seal, and then Xiao and Yelan who broke it and tried to save everyone. I think the mirroring of duality from past to present places a significant amount of weight on Yelan's role in this quest as well.
Not to say that Yelan's role was more important, just that she's the closest second behind Xiao for whom this quest was significant and whose motivations and psychology have to affect the narrative arc of this quest the second most.
I actually think it would've made sense to die for Xiao but I prefer him being saved because despite making sense it would still be a cliché move and ruin the whole vibe of the story. Killing off a character like that is kinda overused in classical literature and films trying to seem realistic

than yours is just a biased opinion.
"Meaningless death" is used by quite a number of media to set up a tone of brutality, realism, and/or hopelessness. That was never the tone that Genshin was going for, so it wouldn't have made sense.
If Xiao had died, then what plot or development would it advance? This is not Zhongli's first time losing someone close to him. The yaksha is a distant and foreign-feeling entity from even Yanfei's POV, much less Yelan, Itto, and Shinobu. The Traveler, having no enemy to direct their anger to (unlike with Teppei), would at worst have a nagging regret that cannot be resolved. Because this is an one-off enemy, not some grand enemy like the Fatui, the Heavenly Principles, or the Abyss. So we can't even set this up for some future vengeance.
So from looking at the long-term ramifications for the world-building or story, I don't see any reason why Xiao has to die. Except to introduce a temporary shock factor of "Oh.. People die in this game."
To be fair, actually that would have impacted yelan A LOT even if they don't know eachother well, they were arguing about sacrifice and stuff even a bit before. Yelan suffered for losing someone and doesn't want to lose anyone in a mission or something anymore if I remember correctly
Yeah, people have no idea that deaths in story is not something that can just be pulled off. Killing Xiao in that moment would waste potential for his character to grow further. I agree that death is something that can elevate a story, but only when executed well. I don't expect any playable character to die until after Snezhnaya.

Xiao dying in chasm quest would have made no sense. By saving him they show him that he can be the person he wants now and that dying for others is not his duty and neither does Liyue expects that from him. By saving him, Genshin will not only change Xiao's character direction, but also develop him further. Anything that will happen to Xiao from this point on will be more meaningful than what would have happened if he died in chasm quest. If he died then it would be Yaksha fulfilling his duty, but whatever happens to Xiao now happens to Xiao, not from a Yaksha perspective but as an individual

It takes 77 rolls on average to get a 5* from the character banner (both mean and median). With a 50:50 win rate this comes to 115.5 on average per banner 5* character. To C6 you need 7 copies of the character which is 808.5 rolls on average. 808.5 wishes costs 129,360 primogems. 16 top-ups of 8080 is 129,280 genesis crystals, which are 1:1. Which means it costs roughly $1,600 USD to C6 a character (at least for whales who've already used the bonuses). As the question 17:31 was 'Whales be like', the answert is $1600 USD and Bran should've won.
P.S. If you still have the bonuses you can get 26,160 genesis crystals for $196, and 12.77 top-ups of 8080. This means even on bonuses it costs roughly $1,473 USD to C6 a character.
Except most people don't go 77 every single time, what's more likely is that during those seven 5* pulls you'll get at least one early.
Also not to nitpick but the average is 76 not 77

I would like to contest the question at 17:40
Assuming someone has average luck, and loses half of their 50/50s, and goes to soft pity per 5 star pull, that would be ~12,000 primos per 5 star. If they lose 3 of the 7, it would be ~120,000 primos, and the $100 package post bonus gives you 8,080 crystals. This comes out to 14.8 $100 packs, or ~$1,500 working with pity being an absolute (As I do in my budgeting).
I find it highly unlikely that the fraction of a percentage of early pulls reduces that by ⅓ the amount required for soft pities each time.
Edit: My math was originally horribly off the first time. It's $1,500, not $15,000. @.@
