First Football code in the world to have fully codified rules 1859 . This pre dates the codification of Soccer , Rugby Union , Rugby League and the NFL .
Also the guy Thomas will's who grew up watching native Australians play Marngrook running jumping kicking... game thousands of years old. He just put a set of rules to this native Australians game!
Yes Australian rules football is played in England Scotland Ireland Denmark Germany... America has 60 teams Canada New Zealand played it even before Rugby union and the All Black's existed... however it is not a professional sport in said countries.... But you would be surprised If you google it. Played world wide!
The record attendance is 121,696 people for the 1970 Grand Final, there's more seating and less standing room now so capacity has fallen to around 100,000. Collingwood pulls the biggest crowds and has been involved in the top 5 highest attendances of all time and regularly brings a million people through the turnstiles each year, their average attendance per game is a little over 80,000.
Australian Football League (AFL) has official affiliation agreements with 15 international governing bodies, ARFL Ireland, AFL Canada, Danish Australian Football League, AFL Scotland, AFL England, AFL Wales, AFL Japan, Nauru Australian Football Association, AFL New Zealand, USAFL, AFL South Africa, AFL PNG, AFL Samoa, Tonga Australian Football Association, AFL Germany and AFL Middle East, although it has working relations with leagues and clubs in further countries.
It's played on cricket fields. Originated as a way to keep cricket players fit during the off-season. So it's a winter sport, because mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.
The game is called Australian Football, the top competition is The Australian Football League (AFL) There are hundreds of competitions throughout Australia, semi pro and amateur, most have mens, womens, and juniors teams. Oldest football clubs in the AFL are Melbourne 1858, Geelong 1859 and Carlton 1864.. Some rural clubs are very old as well
Explaining the scoreline - a goal is worth 6 points, a behind is worth 1 point, so: Collingwood - 20 (x6) + 10 (x1) = 130 Carlton - 18 (x6) + 12 (x1) = 120
Great review Brother! Once you understand a little more about our fabulous game, vould you please do a video on this year's Grand Final which has beem described as one of the best ever with spectacular highlights right to the end. My Team - Collingwood - which is both the most supported and despised club finally won after 13 years 🎉
yep, most despised.... :D We can only hope they have to wait another 13.. :D :D :D Seriously though, we may not like the Magpies but they were pretty impressive this year. Go the Bloods!🦢🦢🦢
Also, someone correct me if I’m wrong please, but aren’t most of the clubs owned by the members? And also that it’s about the only sport in the world where that’s true. I might be completely wrong about this.
Your right, clubs have members who pay an annual fee which gives them certain privileges depending on how much you pay. There is also corporate sponsorship as well, the big clubs can have anywhere between 90-100000 members.
What the penultimate game the grand final played 2 weeks ago 100,024 people watching Collingwood play Brisbane fantastic game don't worry about rules just go with the flow. Collingwoods attendance this year was a total of 764,672 with a average of 63,723 only beaten by one other team sport in the world Dortmand with 81,228 and only half of Australia play the game NSW and Queensland biggest sport is rugby league. it is just a great game if you remove your prejudices (no offside, contact big scores, too many players) you will sit back and enjoy it. Good luck
Welcome to the greatest sport on earth. Make sure you watch 'top 50 goals of all time' and 'top 50 marks of all time', to truly see the spectacular skill on display.

I've only ever gone to 2 major games in person, and I watch maybe a game a year online/tv. It's an incredible game to see, and the skills and physicality are mindblowing, but like so many huge national sports it has a really toxic culture. Racism and sexism are only just starting to be addressed, a lot of the players are hypermasc bogans, etc
you can only play a godly sport like in in godly country like Australia! i don't make the rules that's just how we roll. swing by some, well grab a slab, hit the turf and check in on some sheilas!

This is the best game in the world, it's been our secret since 1858. The word is out now.
It's played on cricket fields.
Originated as a way to keep cricket players fit during the off-season.

AFL has been around for 150 years so it predates all of them sports

'Footy' is an Aussie tradition & is & has been a part of our culture for umpteen years & we love it! Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi!
There's a league of AFL in America called USAFL, but the standard is not the same.
