The book takes place in 1951, and England is trying but failing to lose its class distinctions. The protagonist Jim Dixon is singularly unfit for the academic life he's chosen, and the opportunities for Amis to skewer both the academy and English society are manifest.

This will be the perfect book for me right now. As a student, Jim's contempt for academia is shared by me.
As a recently retired academic who barely survived the profession, I almost died of laughter reading this book, especially the ending.
Jeff is right, my ability to read books now is over until I'm retired, and I'm a 28 year old professional. Time is finite and the only spare time I have is spent laying there exhausted.
