I think you are sleepting on getting better at managing the equiptment available to players. Being better at navigating and controlling the map with "the right gun for the job" or using things like thrust when the enemy is more likely to shoot at you causing a whiff is also extremely important. Being prepared for power weapons and what to do if the enemy gets a hold of that utility is also a huge part of the game that most players don't account for.
