If you ever want to learn how a video game is made, this video is the best reference you can find. Great depiction from start to finish of how video games are made. Shows everything that gets put into video games.

well, I am a game designer myself, don't forget, it said in the video you need to use programming, and it can take a while learn depending which programming langue you use, I use C# for instance, it take at least 6 months or a year to learn that langue, so it can take a few months to make a game, but I get your point kind of, :)

If you are interested, there are game camps in parts of the US(i don't know them all) but you should look them up. The basis of the camp I went to was to give a hands on experiance in designing a game. There are groups of 7 "campers" who work on concept, story, characters, and environments. each group works on their own game. you get to work with animation software and all the tools you need to make a fully functional game. there are prizes at the end of the camp(i think it's a week long).

A studio like this rarely uses one program. typically it's called a "Pipeline" most studios in modern days use Zbrush, 3Ds Max, Maya, Photoshop, an in house Game Engine or something like Unreal 3, which also allows them to write code. As far as sound recording and editing goes, I know very little.

3D Studio Max is commercially available but on top of that many developer companies might use custom-made programs created by their programmers. Programs only meant to work with the games they're making.

If anyone here is interested in programming, start off with Game Maker or Game Salad.. They're easy to learn theory and their languages are also very easy to learn and efficient to use. Don't expect to make 3D games or online games right off the bat of course.

You can be sure a studio such as Ubisoft would use up to date software. They don't need LCD monitors to produce quality games.
Plus, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time was developed in 2003.

that depends on what you are using, to put together a game, you need a Game SDK (Software Development kit)
    These are some below,
Unity 3D (I use this one)
    CryEngine
    Unreal Engine (or UDK)
and maybe a lot others, some people can even make there own Game SDKs I've seen

I LOVE Prince of Persia--I've grown up with it since the very first on Commodore!
    C:> A:
    A:> prince of persia
    Password: prince
    *game runs
Sweet memories...Also, this must have been the alpha stage of the game--they still hadn't fleshed out everything for the textures, and the camera just followed rather than use cinematic angles.

Now a days, all you need to make a video game is:
1-To be a pretty good artist.
    2-Learn to animate.
    3-Be a pretty good musician.
    4-Be good at math.
    5-Have good memory.
    6-Have the internets help.
    7-Have time.
That's it. With this you can make a professional looking game in a month.

@djlink111 no its not, It depends on who is making the game, We use all the tools we can to build the game elements. the .bips we use is from 3ds max, but we use milkshape to fix things here and there, Its a lighter tool to use for pollies.

Hopefully someday I'll have a hit game out.

Another field I would love to break into.

  • @ehabcharek

they use whatever programming language the game engine they are using allows them to use, for example; in unity you get to chose whether you use java or C++, other programs allows you to only use one language like blender (which lets you use python, btw).
so unless we know what game engine they used to make it we won't know what scripting language they used

"because the computer cant process high reso images for fast moving play"
Yep... until the 360, wii, and ps3 came out. Now the cutscenes intergrate with the games rather then interrupt them. Gotta love constantly advancing technology.

  • @mystic81006

@djlink111 we spend alot of time on everything so we do care, The programing is done after the art so we can build up around the art as a story. but I can see what you are saying, We do use max for almost all things as far as exporting and animating the rig. but the collision and all the other stuff is part of the programing.

@DaggersDen Animators don't programme anything. They animate. The hardest job in the games industry is programming because they have to programme and fix bugs and fix more bugs. Programmers are the ones who always finish last. They have to play the game over and over until everything is fixed so a character does not walk through a wall.

Yeah but it's the game testers that are really important O: They're the ones that tell the programmers about the bugs and stuff. And if there ARE bugs then the game is sent back to the programmers to solve it so might take more time too :D

This is sort of accurate, but it's also short-sighted. Sure, violence sells - it always has and always will. And while a lot of video games may cash in on that particular truism, there are a lot of others that don't - sports sims, racing games, rhythm games, puzzle adventures... then there are games like "Cooking Mama" and "Audiosurf"
Violence may = profit, but so do a lot of other things in the games industry.

3:00 This is NOT motion capture. Motion capture is when someone uses a specially designed suit and software to map real time movement and translate it into coordinates to a bone structure inside of the animation software. What they have there is simply reference images.

That wasn't motion capture, it was just an animator filming himself with his webcam to get a reference for animation. Mocap is a MUCH more complicated (but often necessary) process than depicted here.

It depends on how you want it to work.
Would periods through life be staged? or would it be a constant background process, always growing, too slowly to really see, using some sort of morphing timeline.
What sort of AI would need to be present? The parents, the other present dangers.
How realistic do you want it to be? how fine should the details be? How many variables?
Would it be a simple health and hitpoints, or a full out simulated anatomy with possible localized and detailed afflictions?

mm, but computers are actually able to have the same graphics during gameplay as the cutscenes, but the mainstream gamers, who aren't hardcore-gamers, usually doesn't have "good" enough computers.
So I guess the games wouldn't sell that well, if they were made with high definition gameplay-graphics, since it would be mostly hardcore-gamers/computer-people who would have good enough computers to drive them.

i can't believe that everything has been all drawed by hand from the backgrounds to the characters, even worse they have to recreate both characters and backgrounds twice in both hi and low resolution.
man that must take forever to do that and modeling it into 3d is alot of guessing and i wonder if these 3d modelings resambles for what those drawing artists had intended, either way it,s hell, respect to those game designers, also games are made so damm fast these day's!!!
