  • In this video I take a look at the Pilot Vanishing Point with extra-fine nib and compare it to the steel extra-fine nib of a Kaküno and and a 14k extra-fine Lamy nib.

    Honestly, almost every pen you review make me want to go out and buy immediately. I especially appreciate this one in particular because like you I didn’t want to invest in a fountain pen masquerading as a click-pen; but alas, you have swayed me again. 😂

    The Pilot VP is such a great pen! You described it well. Glad you were able to try it out in person.

    Thanks for a great review. I have 2 VP’s- fine and a stub. One is a Decimo. I love them and use them often. I like to support. Brick and mortar shops. If they completely disappear, we will never be able to see or try pens unless we go to a pen show. Pen Shop’s are fun because they usually have accessories, paper products, stationary, etc.

      You're welcome! And I agree with your attitude towards brick and mortar stores. Being able to test a pen in person has real value. 😀

    The Pilot Vanishing Point is always with me. The only downside for me is the ink capacity. It is not a downside of the pen itself it is more my fault for not checking the ink level before leaving home. Sadly, there were times that I would sit down to use it somewhere and it would be empty...lol. I have 3 all matte black VPs with different nibs and the lovely orange marble. So, it is definitely a favorite. The Pilot Custom 823 is my #1. Thank you for sharing your experience with the Pilot VP.

    Hi Cathy. Thank you for your video! I have 2 Pilot Vanishing Points, and 2 new Majohn a1 pens in their new grey metal stripes versions. I love these pens. They are my daily writing pens.
    I know what you mean regarding shopping at a brick-and-mortar store. This weekend, I'm traveling to Tabula Rasa, a high-end pen store in Salt Lake City. Now, they are FULL retail, and more! This is the kind of store where the salespeople all wear suits 😂

    I finally found a use for my (also Gunmetal) VP - as a desk pen in a (Good Made Well) Penwell.
    I tend to clip pens on my neckline during the day. When I use a click gel pen, the nock is near my thumb when I remove the pen for use, so a quick click has me ready to write. Fountain pens clip with the nib pointing up and turning it around is part of the uncapping. No problem.
    The VP for some unknown reason makes me fumble for a second, every time I go to use it. My brain knows it has a nock, and doesn't like not having that nock at the top while clipped.
    Now I use the VP in a Penwell on my desk. The nock is at the top, and it is very easy for me to pick it up and prepare for writing. Ditto if it is laying flat on a desk. It is only my usual neckline clipping that causes the momentary confusion.
    It is a great writer. (18k F) My only issue with the pen was getting it orientated.

    Thanks, as always, for your detailed personal view of this pen. I recently bought a decimal with a fine and extra stub nib. Like you, I was surprised at how much I love writing with this pen. Before my purchase, I bought Chinese copies of the Vanishing Point and the Decimal. They too are fine writers, I chose the Decimal for its size and weight.

      If I ever get another Vanishing Point, I would probably get the Decimo size, just to have the variety. I do like the look of the champagne model. And I would probably get a stub, again for the variety. 😀

    I have a few Pilot VP and VP Decimo's and love them - if anyone is thinking of getting an extra fine nib though, just be aware that these really are 'extra fine' (my extra fine nibs write like the reverse writing in this video). They arn't really suitable for use with low quality paper either so if you go with one, make sure you have a decent paper (Rhodia, Clairefontaine etc) - they also work best with light pressure only - a light touch really is needed with these. They are lovely nibs though - especially for writing in Japanese (they are designed for the Japanese alphabet afterall) - plenty of feedback (some may say scratchy but feedback is the proper term I think) and more noisy that the other nib sizes. ps - Noodlers Heart of Darkness is a lovely black ink to use with these

      I guess I got lucky with my VP EF. And I agree, definitely use a light touch when writing with that nib. It's like writing with an eyelash. 😀

    I really like my PVP too. Mine is a broad nib though, and the blue carbonesque.
    Like you, the clip location hasn’t been a problem at all for me.
    Hope you continue to enjoy your newest addition.

    Sometimes I feel guilty for paying full retail. Other times I wish I had! I think you just described the exact reasons why paying retail and having a wonderful retail experience is just the right thing to do. I hope you love your pen for many years to come! I was looking at this pen for my wife, and you made some great points that have helped me make my decision. Thank you.

      I'm glad I could help! In hindsight I have no regrets about paying full price for this pen. It's definitely a keeper. Unfortunately, the pen shop that I purchased it from closed up shop permanently, so now I feel even stronger about buying directly from small pen shops.

    I had a similar experience with purchasing a Pilot Decimo. I went to a store to try and purchased one quickly. So surprised at how well made the pen was for me- retractable nib, well made smooth ef gold nib (i prefer ef nibs), comfortable to hold (i was worried about the grip/clip as well). Very satisfied and havent felt need to look for the next best pen for 3 months, except to possibly purchase a standard VP. Enjoy your Vanishing Point!

    Interesting to me is that the reverse writing with the Kakuno looks wetter/wider than the normal writing with the nib. Thanks for the video!

    I have two Decimo pens, but if I had the opportunity to try a Capless in real life I have a feeling I might like it even more than my Decimos. I would love to have a brick and mortar pen shop near me and would definitely support it, rather than purchasing pens online.

    Thanks for the review, it brought me back to the ones I have, but they sit un-inked and abandoned in a pen case. One is a Pilot Clipless, the other a Moon Man (now Majohn) A1. The latter bought on the cheap with a roll-stop and no pocket clip.
    The torture never stopped.
    The Capless I purchased with a Gold Medium Nib because that is what I usually like, but it was too broad. Then I bought a replacement Capless innerds in a Gold Fine. Still too broad. I trimmed it down thinner, which seemed OK. But the pocket clip drove me crazy.
    Then I bought a Moon Man A1 without a clip. Couldn't stand that either. Orienting the nib to write effectively proved to be daunting. I just couldn't see enough of the nib to get it right all the time.
    Then I noticed that both the Pilot and the Moon Man were experiencing Nib Creep. I had put the Medium Nib assembly in the A1 because I didn't like the A1 Steel Nib.
    Both pens were constantly getting gunked up inside with leaking ink.
    At that point I gave up, cleaned both of them up and put them both away for the duration. End of story...

  • @D3D587
    @D3D587 Рік тому +2

    The Majohn A1 is very close to my Pilot Capless. You can also get an A1 without the clip. You can swap out the Pilot Vanishing point nib into the A1. The Majohn A2 is their Decimo like pen. The A2 is also very light. I find them very good for their price.

    There's a way to prevent paint chipping at the knock. When you retract the nib, you must cushion the knock with your thumb and gently let it come to its stop. Don't just click to retract, and lift your thumb immediately. The retraction recoil is quite violent and often you'll get a scratched up knock in the process. The VP is almost the perfect pen as long as it receives reasonable TLC.

    • @gadgetstop321
      @gadgetstop321  11 місяців тому +1

      It's interesting that you mention that. One of my concerns before buying one of these pens with matte black trim was that the knock would get scratched up from the wear and tear of normal use. But I was pleasantly surprised when I tested this pen in the store. The knock doesn't feel like it's scraping metal to metal. In fact, it's very smooth. I think there might be a plastic collar between the knock and the rest of the pen. But I still operate the knock very carefully, like you described. I love this pen and want it to last a long time. 😀

    • @stimpunk
      @stimpunk 11 місяців тому

      @@gadgetstop321 It will last a long time with care. I have several VPs throughout the years and I've noticed no hidden plastic collars. It's the black metal ring on the barrel that will scrape at the knock. Here's a video of how I retract my knock after use. ua-cam.com/video/E4pOMhyI9YQ/v-deo.html

    1. Sounds like you found yourself a winner. Might you slow down your purchasing? (I think I've reached that point)

      1. This VP is absolutely a winner! I too think I'll be buying fewer, if any, pens in the future. (Famous last words!) I think I've reached the point that I can rotate through my favorite pens and each time, feel like I'm writing with something fresh and exciting.
      2. I wholeheartedly agree!

      suspect a vanishing point may be my next pen purchase!: thanks for this:); hope you don’t mind me asking but I’ve heard you talking about changing nibs on Lamy safari’s: does the nib just slide out (ie friction fit) or do you need to dismantle the pen?(have been asked to swap out the F nib for an EF nib for a friend and don’t want to accidentally damage the current nib: help!, please:)

    • @gadgetstop321
      @gadgetstop321  8 місяців тому +1

      Yes, the Lamy nibs are friction fit onto the feed and just slide off. Sometimes they're on there pretty tight, though. It's often suggested to use some scotch tape to grip the nib and I found that to be helpful. There are several videos out there demonstrating that method if you want to see what it would look like. 😀
