  • This 13-minute video is a version of a slideshow I use for talks about Basin and Range. It provides a good overview of the area and why it was created.

I really enjoyed this video. Thankyou for sharing. It is a very amazing place. Access is somewhat tricky, but worth finding. Mt. Irish Archeological Site, and White River Narrows were incredible.

Nice presentation on Basin and Range. I would just like to add that as you showed the rock house built near the old site of Camp Logan you did not have much info on the house. The house was built by my grandfather, Thomas Theron Schofield, of Las Vegas, NV. He started the project in the late 1950's. I helped him remodel it in 1968. Tom grew up in Hiko, NV and was a prospector in the area for many decades.Robert Schofield, Carson City, NV

+robert schofield Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I have more information about Logan here: www.birdandhike.com/Hike/BasinRange/Poi/LoganTown/_LoganTown.htm, and I included your comments. If you'd like to add more information about Logan, this webpage is a place where you can share it with the world.

I think it was very kind of you , Robert Schofield, to add this personal information about the rock house. Wow. Thank you for that valuable information.

Excellent video. I love exploring the lesser known monuments (Just check out my UA-cam channel).i just filmed at gold butte on Monday. From say las Vegas, how is this area reached? Up the 395 between I15 and Ely? I would love to check it out. Thanks very much for sharing and any help would be appreciated.

Some USFS area do pretty well. Hopefully with the new administration and more funding, all of our national forests will be able to function properly and protect our resources.

The Great Basin refers to the fact that all streams flow into a basin, not the sea--they evaporate. This has NOTHING to do with the Basin&Range province, which refers to the stretching of the crust, the tilting of the fault blocks, and the formation of these parallel basin-range-basin-range-basin-range. That these b&r exist in the Great Basin is a coincidence.

It is hard to understand your point.

I would rather see the uninterrupted landscape as opposed to an artists desire for validation. Real art doesn't destroy one type of beauty to replace it with a monument to an artist's ego. And I'm an artist myself. Thanks for destroying what was a pristine view, I mean, wow, what a statement!

Hi Tom, I too would rather see the uninterrupted landscape. "City," is, however, on private land, and it is hard in America to tell someone what they can do with their land, especially when it predates designation of the National Monument. In addition, I suppose we could say the same about any land-art project, and we are unlikely to stop or remove any of them. In this case, at least we have the entire landscape around "City" protected from development. Have you been out there yet?
