This needs more respect than it is getting
Ah yes, love this piece so much. Brings back memories of counting 137 measures of rest
Percussion. I get it.
Stuart McMeans actually tuba! But basically the same when it comes to sleeping in class 😂 Note: that wasn’t me, it was the guy sleeping next to me
@@bobkammauff3582 Third movement?
Haha 😂
Delightful.
Played Movements 1 and 2 in High School in 1981. Great playing here ...the 2nd movement is just beuatiful
Played this in HS band (bass trombone) along with some very talented bandmates in the mid 70s. Our director, Wes Haines, was a master at pulling the best out of us. God, this is a beautiful piece. Makes me cry. So powerful...and gentle.
Oh, and only the first 7 minutes of it. We were all passed out by then!
@@georgegardner8806 Thankfully the last movement is fairly calm and leisurely
Played this my senior year of high school for UIL (mvt. 2 and 4), one of my most memorable experiences in band by far. I still listen to it all the time, such an incredible piece of music!
We’re playing this this year for concert festival. I’m so excited!
The flute solo with the clarinets underneath at 8:12 is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard in my life. I was a section 2nd clarinet so I didn't get to play the line there but I loved just listening to it.
Maravillosa obra, una de las más bellas sinfonías norteamericanas jamás compuestas en s.20!!!!!
I don't know if there is any better group than Eastman Wind Ensemble and this rich, lush, lyric performance seems to be in their wheelhouse. A wonderful piece of music! Bravo on all accounts.
I wish my community band would play this piece. One of my favorite band works ever.
Haven't heard this in decades! What a pleasure.
Flute player in 2nd movt. Props. Told a story. Kept energy up. Fantastic playing.
Wonderful composition for band.
the 2nd movement is so cruel sounding but has these flashes of beauty, it's really just indescribably beautiful
This is wonderful! Movements I, III, and IV are lively and upbeat; feature "cinematic" brass passages, even a fugato section! Great orchestration!
Thank You for posting. I played this in 1964 and it has been a tremendous inspiration all these years.
I played this in 1964 too. Maybe we played it together!
I played it in Flagstaff, Arizona 1964?
13:34 this changing chord really does it for me. Chills at that part.
Italian or American, is of no consequence. Giannini is a wonderful composer and this Symphony No. 3 from 1958 is a true masterpiece of the Wind Band Repertory. I am glad for whoever claims him as their national to have his music available to hear on this medium. Well done. Listen carefully to the lyricism of this writing. Beautiful solo instrumental writing, luscious harmony and wonderful sense of space. The adagio is extremely dramatic. Quite unusual for many wind band works. This is a true test for any ensemble and conductor. Of course well done EWE.

Can't stand the term "wind band." Isn't there a better alternative?
Dennis Chiapello Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and it can be military band but it depends on the instrumentation
@@mlefeb how about "Symphonic Band", "Symphony Band", "Wind Symphony", or "Wind Orchestra"?
Padraic Fanning Yeah those work too
This is wonderful! I had never heard of this composer, or of "band symphonies" before! Now I have a whole new realm of music to explore! I love it!!!
I PLAYED THIS IN HIGH SCHOOL IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!!
As I did also; Donald Cuthbert, director. We had to wait while the clarinet section worked and worked, etc. to get it right. Brass- cornet player
suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuper!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow! Blast from the past. Why isn't this piece programmed more often? I remembered the lines I played on the Eb Clarinet back in college, very effective usage. Great hopeful tonality and the contrapuntal techniques were brilliant. Thanks for posting!
this cover image really brings me back: it appears to be a painting of the 125th St. Station along the 1 train in NYC, which is right outside Manhattan School of Music's current campus. Giannini taught at MSM many years ago - before I went there myself. thanks for sharing this... memories and history mingle together...
Looks to be about the 1920s
I like the small brass section. All of these new wind ensemble recordings have unnecessarily huge instrumentation.
That's why carolina crown chose it for dci
Terrific adagio..
🇧🇷❤❤

I love John French Sloan's paintings!
So good!!
It's a nice one :)
Interessante.
putting this here for myself!

crown 2k17!
crown bring me to here. :-D
trex1490 What minute is the crown part?
And I thought I had escaped to the realm where the DCI circle jerk isn't, but I can't escape it.

Falta qualquer coisa - aqui e ali marcial, passagens pouco claras, confuso. Mas aqui de Portugal, o saúdo! Até que enfim, compõe-se música com "M".

Like the new guy
Here‘s the program note that was written by Giannini himself:
“The *Symphony No. 3* was composed on a commission by the Duke University Band and its conductor, Paul Bryan, during the summer of 1958, in Rome Italy, where I was spending my vacation. It is my second work for band; the first, Praeludium and Allegro, was commissioned by Richard Franko Goldman.
I can give no other reason for choosing to write a symphony to fulfill this commission than that I ‘felt like it,’ and the thought of doing it interested me a great deal.
I will not go into the technical details of the work. Basically, the listener is not concerned with them beyond what they can hear for themselves. I follow no ‘isms’ when I compose; I try to project and communicate a feeling, a thought that is in me at the time, using whatever technique is suggested by my mood to achieve this communication.
The form of the movements is this: first movement - sonata allegro; second movement - A B A; third movement - A B A B; fourth movement - sonata allegro. There is no program - only what I heard and felt at the time. I hope it makes music.”
vanguard still finna take the title tho
aAaqui_ _ sure. The group that has consistently gotten 4th and 5th place for the past 5 years is gonna win. You're right. It's definitely not going to be blue devils, the group that hasn't gone two years without winning sense 2007. No vanguard all the way baby 😜.
Ian Cole you're*
aAaqui_ _ dang it! I just did the typing equivalent of rapping straight fire but stuttering at the end.
Ian Cole also, the vanguard had very little age outs last season which means their corps will be as experienced as can be. They won drums last year beating out 3 corps the placed higher. If they can do it in drums they can do it in ge. And I'm sure you also know that general effect wins the show. And it's also the vanguard's 50th anniversary so they have all the hype on their side. Not to mention that the scv now have micheal Gaines on visual. Michael Gaines having been with the Cavaliers from 98 to 2011. And when is the last time the cavies finished in the top 3? 2011. In that time period that they had gaines, the cavies finished at the very least fourth in visual proficiency. I have tons of reasoning and I can keep going but I want to hear some stats from you too. Not just lucky coincedinces. Things change in drum corps. BD won't only finish out of 1st when there's a first time ever champion kid. All corps can do it.
I guess that's my equivalent.
Uhm... the rhythm at 17:35 is not even close to correct... I mean, it's a great performance, except that one part.
Lol at least they tried
To be fair, -Fennell- Roller took that *way* faster than the prescribed tempo of quarter note = 112-118. It is supposed to be Allegretto, after all.
