I've always wrapped a monkey knot (when changing from X,Y, or Z) by crossing to the farthest wrap first, instead of the nearest. When I do that, both my ends come out in the same spot. So there is no need to Pass the tail end under wraps to reach the other end. I hope that makes sense. It's hard to explain without a picture.
@@coreymahoney5365 I know what you mean, I've been playing around with that method. I kind of did it by accident once, and with your description and a bit more practice, I will be using that method from now on, thanks for the comment!
Just made this .... total beginner to having a finished product that I am proud of in about 3 hours. Had to redo the monkey fist about 6 times to figure out which way to twist on the turns. You need to have just the right amount of wraps for it to look good. Did 4 wraps on a 1 inch ball and you actually need 5 for it look good I think. Thanks for the vid.
@@belden007 I'm at a complete loss on this video. I've executed the technique before, but it takes 5 passes on a 1" ball to completely cover it. 4 passes will cover a 3/4" ball, but the diamond knot on top is too small to be proportional to a 3/4" ball. The ball in the video is in proportion to the split keyring included. Which makes it very annoying to me because I've wanted to produce a near-exact replica of this stinger since I first found the video three years ago.
That thing brings back a lot of happy memories! In my younger years I was a Linesman for a commercial ferry company with many and varied duties, but my main job (other than Customs paperwork) was tying up the vessels as they arrived. We used to call those knots Monkey Nuts, they were much bigger though and were attached to the end of a long line of rope called the Heaving Line. You wind the rope up like a Lasso, making sure to have a firm grip on your end of the rope, and with a firm swing you could launch that thing right into the hands of vessel engineers at a distance of 30ft (after a _lot_ of practice), the crew attaches it to one of the main heavy mooring lines and then you pull both lines back in and tie the vessel up (usually four mooring lines in total). The new guys always got laughed at by the French vessel crews, those things can go flying in any direction until you get the knack. We had a lot of banter, despite the language barrier, lol There were a lot of tears when that company went under, we all miss that job a lot, we were like a large dysfunctional yet loving family, lol Starting to feel sad now, lol, I’m off Happy New Year all! 🍻

Being an old Navy man. A monkey's fist was tied onto the end of a line similar to clothes line...Had a much larger core. the other end of the line was tied to the bight of the ship's mooring line. So when the ship pulls up to the dock, a Boatswain's Mate would heave the line with the monkey's fist to a crew on the dock and they would proceed to pull the ship's mooring line over, hopefully keeping it out of the water.

I started putting bouncy balls instead of ball bearings 20 something years ago. Monkeys fists look cool, tie on to many tools/items and make it so the end won’t slip through your hand. I would put a loop large enough to put my hand through before the monkeys fist knot. It was used to wrap around our wrists so we didn’t drop the tool attached when working up high. You get hit once with that ball bearing it’ll change your mind…. When it’s hanging out of your pocket it’ll swing around and get you in the sweet spot seemingly every time. 😆
This is hilarious, I bet you would make a great antifa berserker swinging two of these around. May think it's great for self defense but I bet you get knocked out twirling your fairy balls
i bought one of these on a keyring from amazon a while ago, before they stopped selling good self defense stuff, i added a pepper spray pouch that i converted to a lock back folding knife sheath and i do carry it, it works well as a conversation piece as well as a self defense tool. it wouldn't take a buck 110 in the pepper spray pouch but it did take the puma game warden nice and snug, it was on the table at lunch one day and one of my co-workers asked what it was so i tossed it to him and as soon as he held it in his hand he was really wanting one put together the same way, then he took the knife out and cut his finger with it

This is amazing!! I’m very new to para cord knot tying. Like so new I tide my first cobra knot today. Kinda makes my eyes hurt watching lol. But I’m sure I’ll get used to it. Thanks so much for the info your sharing. 🤘🏼⚡️🤘🏼
in the old days these would be tied on the ends of ropes to help when throwing them. Some sailors would use them, others would cut them off when they saw them because they were dangerous
Not meaning to criticize, but I've noticed a lot of modern knot tiers have invented names for certain knots that sound foreign to someone with a nautical background, or even just to older folks. At time 7:05, you say you're tying a square knot, but it's technically & traditionally a right crown knot. I realize it "looks" square but that doesn't make it a square knot. When you are tying your shoes, the first thing you do is tie an overhand knot before you tie a bow knot. If you then place an 'alternating' overhand knot over the first one, that's a square knot. And what you are calling a snake knot is technically just a 2-strand crown knot. Over the past few hundred years, many people of various trades used and named knots in their normal course of work. Sailors, whalers, merchantmen, pirates, bakers, millers, livestock handlers, weavers and others, all using specialized knots well-suited to their needs. Loggers used axes to fell trees, farm wives used hatchets to split kindling for the wood stove, and Native Americans used tomahawks in battle. In a way, they all seem like the same tool, but the names and the usage are different & specific. I think it's important to keep & use proper names in order to honor traditions & history. The Ashley Book of Knots is a great reference for when, where, and how knots were named & used. I bought my copy in 1972, but it's still available. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ashley_Book_of_Knots BTW, nice key chain & stinger. Good job!!

wow, i just found my new hobby i have been looking for, Thank You! im trying it! weeeee 2 feet on the left before your begin? more like 3 or 4 if the cords are supposed to be the same length after the basic ball shape is done, just FYI
Loved your video! I've been tying monkey fist knots since I was 14 (1987) All the ones I've ever tied have been ship bell lanyards or for heaving lines. Please forgive my ignorance, but, when you call it an impact tool I'm not 100% sure what that means. So impact tool would be...like something to break glass in an emergency? I swear I'm not a troll. 🤓
Depends on who you are. A lot of people would see it as a weapon, but I was kind of wondering how useful it might be as a glass breaker with the paracord softening the blow. Other than that, it's kind of a neat keychain idea if you're prone to losing them?
I believe that they were very commonly used in Ireland, so of course they're illegal in the UK. And they are very effective. Just a tap behind the ear works well.
This was exactly what I was looking for!! Thank You so much!! Just one ting, when You are saying the top right crossing over- You must say crossing under, because it made me confused, You actually crossing under the bottom left...
If you don't have a steel ball bearing, you can use a roll of quarters cut in half and placed side by side, held together with an elastic band. This also gives you a hidden cache of money for phone calls or other minor emergencies. I imagine if you really wanted to, you could use silver or gold coins instead for a considerably larger hidden stash.
Those "golden" dollar coins from the late 2000s would be perfect. Could even do those in the center, with quarters on the sides, then nickels on the ends to make it more round.
@@MachtPlays I used to run with ARA in the 80s, so I was a street brawler. Knuckle dusters are illegal here, but a roll of quarters is perfectly legal to carry in your pocket, and allows your punches to land much harder when you curl them into your fist.

I have zero interest in this kind of thing, and will absolutely never attempt to make one of these. I did however find the video fascinating. Thank you, and great job!
If anyone is struggling with the passes to make the two strings meet on the monkey fist, I recommend tying a string and sewing needle to the end of your paracord. Then pulling and pushing it through the other cords but, be gentle the string may snap.
I recommend using a mostly round rock and not a steel ball bearing. you should never use this little guy for any kind of impacting of anything anyway, so don't waste the ball bearing. In Boy Scouts, we used to make these with rocks to pass the time between activities or at night when it was too dark to do stuff away from the camp fire. They are pretty relaxing to make because it takes a decent amount of focus to not mess it up and its not overly complicated. If you want to use one for hunting though, you need to go way bigger and you also need to check your local fish and game laws to see if hunting with this kind of weapon is legal. Even in a survival situation, where most hunting laws are suspended, you will want to make a MUCH larger knot. I would recommend you spend your paracord on snare traps anyway because hitting a bird with one these is insanely difficult. its basically a sling that is a lot slower and harder to aim

This is amazing!! I’m very new to para cord knot tying. Like so new I tide my first cobra knot today. Kinda makes my eyes hurt watching lol. But I’m sure I’ll get used to it. Thanks so much for the info your sharing. 🤘🏼⚡️🤘🏼
when I was in navy, I used this for throwing line.
Thank you, made me a great Daughter for my father!
in the old days these would be tied on the ends of ropes to help when throwing them. Some sailors would use them, others would cut them off when they saw them because they were dangerous
That’s some Eagle Scout level knot work. This one might be beyond me.
Lengthen the lanyard out to 8’ now you’ve got a real weapon for long or short range.
If it's too long you run the risk of whacking yourself with it.
Nice to see guys knitting
-- I bet that idea came up after a few hours of playing WATCH DOGS 2. . .😁
Nice work!
That’s what I instantly thought of when I saw this video
UA-cam recommendations just showing me random things now great video

BTW, nice key chain & stinger. Good job!!
Very well made. Thanks this was awesome. Gonna make one for my wife.
Why? Buy her a Glock
Do you sell these? As I can’t be arsed to do this😂🍻
Homey the Clown taught us how to use a sock and rock quite nicely!
Right when I was going to say "get a fid!!" You got a fid.
What's a fid?
@@redeyestones3738 it's a poking tool (like the tip of an antler) that one uses to separate cordage/loosen knot whilst arranging to tighten
I never saw something like this, but it is awesome! I'll try to make one when I buy some parachord
😂😂😂
Made this myself, except with an 8 ball. ✌🏻🤣
Gonna make one with a golf ball. Fore!
I would suggest you consider the relativity of terms like "away from me," "horizontally from that," and "counter clockwise."
I have one of those things I always wondered who and how it was made. Thanks for the info I'll be able to make more now.
I am a man that have learned more than most people wil ever learn in their entire lifetime and that's combined with all of their family's knowledge. but there are some things I just haven't learned even though I was taught briefly when I was 19 as a volunteer at a firehouse, ropes and knots. thank you for making this video, I am going to get me a bearing and some paracord 750 paracord. I'm going to save this video I'm going to make my own video showing what you taught me here today and then link your video as credit. normally I am the teacher but today I am the student thanks teach!
you are a man that have learned? you didn't learn much.
Thank you for your awsome tutorials
wow, i just found my new hobby i have been looking for, Thank You!
im trying it! weeeee
2 feet on the left before your begin? more like 3 or 4 if the cords are supposed to be the same length after the basic ball shape is done, just FYI
Another well described tutorial - easy to follow and I look forward to trying it.
I just got it figured. Thanks soo much!
@@return2sender791 so is a screw driver
That's some bos'n mate stuff there.
I believe that they were very commonly used in Ireland, so of course they're illegal in the UK. And they are very effective. Just a tap behind the ear works well.
Yeah the UK stasi doesn't want anyone defending themselves.
Yeah the UK stasi doesn't want anyone defending themselves.
This was exactly what I was looking for!! Thank You so much!! Just one ting, when You are saying the top right crossing over- You must say crossing under, because it made me confused, You actually crossing under the bottom left...
I’m getting the ball bearing showing throw the monkeys fist how do I fix this
Do an 5 passes instead of 4.
You never know when you’re walking to the gas station and suddenly need to rappel down a ravine. So make sure you have your trusty paracord bracelet
Phone calls lol theres no more pay phones 😩when did you type that 1995?lol

@@NoJusticeNoPeace hmm not sure what that means but I’m 29 lol. And i used pay phones when i was kid yes lol.
This was the first thing I weaved. It was fun.
P.s I just finished and it's 6am
OH man I thought you were going to hit something with it.
I still prefer my cement filled bucket and broom stick flail but thank you for the in-depth tutorial and good day sir.
Bust someone’s wig with that thing lol
😂🤣😂🤣😂
Kajukidbo925 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Nice
Cue ball in a sock works good too or half a pool stick 👍
No idea how I got here but I'm fairly confident I would be more successful performing brain surgery blindfolded than I would be trying to replicate that.
Try both and compare, then make a yt video
THAT IS FANTASTIC, YOU LOST ME WHEN I COULDN'T SEE THE BALL ANYMORE
Also known as a “slung shot”, which has been outlawed in Vermont since the mid 19th century.
Hello
I am disabled, I also do handicrafts, nice to invite you to visit
I have zero interest in this kind of thing, and will absolutely never attempt to make one of these.
I did however find the video fascinating.
Thank you, and great job!
I’m fascinated, but when you start explaining the knots I hear “beep, boop, bop, beep”. I’m a dummy
Were you guys even watching the same video? It was neep meep baap beep doop bop, boo!
Should be noted the Monkey Fist around a weighted object is classified as concealed weapon in some states.
I think he must have shares in a Tylenol company 🤪😵🤯
If anyone is struggling with the passes to make the two strings meet on the monkey fist, I recommend tying a string and sewing needle to the end of your paracord. Then pulling and pushing it through the other cords but, be gentle the string may snap.
I could watch this a million x and the end result most certainly would not be a monkey’s fist 🤷🏻♂️
You have to do it to make it, not watching
Salamander Z I agree. Mine would be more of a Cluster F.
Nice weave
Chain and lock works good
Просто супер, спасибо!!!!
