- Mexico City is filled with markets. Street food especially. But today I teamed up with Mariel de Viaje for something different. A witch craft market named Mercado Sonora. We wanted a special kind of cleanse... one that involved our spirit. Called a "Limpia con Huevo"
Mercado Sonora is in the South East of Mexico City, in a neighbourhood called Merced Balbuena. To the average person, it appears to be a normal place. Food, clowns, toys, clothing, are all lined up in perfect aisles. If you head to the back, and follow your nose, you can find a section that is not for everyone...
This is the Witchcraft market of Mexico City. It's filled with all sorts of magic and medicine. Dried stingrays and armadillos hang from the ceiling. Signs for encapsulated skunk and rattle snake posted on the walls. Hundreds of candles line the walls offering spells to increase your sex drive and break up lovers.
"Que Buscabas?" Is what you hear from every shopkeeper. "What are you looking for?" they ask.
This is a deeper question than it first appears. It's not cutlery, or vegetables they are offering. Here in mercado sonora they are selling you, happiness, good luck, love... everything you could possibly want in life.
We were on a search for a "Limpia" a cleaning of the soul. A spirit cleanse you could call it. There are many different kinds, but we were looking for one where an egg is rubbed over the body, absorbing the bad energy from your spirit.
This area of CDMX isn't particularly safe, and it is very forbidden to film inside the market. We had to go incognito on our cellphones.
I met up with my travel vlogger friend Mariel de Viaje and we entered.
It ended with a hilarious surprise. We may need to go back again to Mercado Sonora afterall

Yep Mike, watched it to the end and the prehispanic taco made up of bugs, the red worms if I remember correctly are Zacuiles, found overturning agave plants and picking them from the base of the plant,...maybe a prehispanic food video in the works? Hint..hint..., well until then checking out Mariel's channel, yet another IRIE Person, LIKE YOU! ;D

Mike Corey My grandma in Michoacan, Mexico when i visit her she would do me the egg limpia and then she would crack the egg in a glass of water and let it sit a few minutes and see if you have bad vibes.

My friends’ abuelita does limpias on me like every month and trust me they work. Literally after every limpia I start crying because I just feel all my pain and unwanted negative energy leaving my body. It’s honestly great
The limpias feel amazing I remember when I was a kid I had the fear of dogs and they took me with 4 people that do limpias and I feel better now

It's recommended that one does their own "limpia", nobody should be touching your head except your mother or a family.. because it's sacred and the guardians we have in the center of our head get upset that's why sometimes cleanings turn out bad and we start having bad luck

My uncle practices Santeria. He cleansed me once without asking and I was terrified because he looked possessed. He was, a spirit would take over his body for cleansing rituals. Once it was over I felt something detach from me and i felt very light and at peace.

Where there is witchcraft there are shenanigans! Seemed like a wildly interesting day you guys had. Also, SUPER impressive that you were able to put together such an awesome video with mostly cell phone footage. That takes skill!
Honestly it killed me a little bit inside. I looooove taking the time to get beautiful shots to really show you guys the feel of a place. In this case, we had to hide the camera most of the time, and always be watching for the owners who would freak if they saw us filming. It was hard to edit, only because I wanted to show you so much more!
We feel you there! We almost got kicked out of the grocery store the other day when trying to record a "cost of living" post in San Blas! We had four employees following us around the store on their walkie-talkies until we high-tailed it outta there! Lol
In any case, you did an awesome job working with the footage you managed to get. And you got REALLY creative to get some of it. Stellar job, despite the limitations. We thought it gave it more of a "rough" real-life feel to it. :)

Hahah i really wish I could have filmed the second cleansing... but the truth is, the most authentic witches won't let you bring a camera anywhere near them. It's hard to get a real experience on film!

I went there once, I was just looking for a genuine fox tail for my motorcyle as ornament, I only walked a few meters into that market Sonora and the people I asked said they were out of fox tails, they didn't know when they could get more. I was like ''oh, ok! thanks...'' and while there I could detect the most repulsive and unbearable fucking smells together with some pretty fucking nasty vibes that I felt, I simply left the fuck out of there!! Lol. Unless you're looking for an excellent taco stand or whatever related to food you can't get anywhere else in mexico city I don't think it's a place you should visit. XD XD.

Mike Corey I would love to go back and explore! I went back to México for the first time after 20 years (barely got my green card a few years ago) and just recently went last October 2017. I was only there for 6 days but I loved it. I spent most of the time visiting family but I definetely want to go back and explore more.
