  • The Napoleonstein (English: Napoleon Stone) at the Battlefield of Jena-Auerstedt of 1806. Filmed on 13 August 2022. It almost looks like a monolith from “2001: A Space Odyssey”. Napoleon commanded the Battle of Jena from this point at first, on the mountain called Windknollen. And later during the battle, he went to the small village of Cospeda to command the battle from there. Cospeda can be seen too, where the crane is, at 0:34. The distant city from 0:15 to 0:20 is Jena itself, which was already in French hands during the battle and from where extra French troops were coming to join the battle. During this battle, Napoleon crushingly defeated Prussia (and Saxony) and virtually completed his conquest of Germany. He still had some cities to capture but the Prussian resistance had in fact been broken. A profound moment in German and European history. Prussia was humiliated but it would not forget…
