(1) This poem, called Exiting the Pass (出塞), was written by Wang Changling. The “Flying General” it mentions refers to Li Guang, a famous Han dynasty general who fought against the Xiongnu. The Tang dynasty was, just like the Han (and every other Chinese dynasty), afflicted by border incursions of “barbaric” peoples, thus inspiring Wang to look back to the warriors of old.
(2) When the Yans fell in 1562, Hu Zongxian, who was seen as their accomplice, was quickly impeached. He was thereafter pardoned and allowed to retire. However, in 1565 when Yan Shifan was executed, Hu was again arrested, and died in prison.

(4) Imperial China had always taken its own historiography very seriously. Specific officials were responsible for compiling the records of each emperor’s life. While some emperors were known to meddle with their own records, they still provide a very good day-to-day account that helps us understand most emperors better than many western rulers.
(5) Technically we are already in the titular year of 1566, with Chinese New Year usually landing on early February. But it’s fairly common practice to correlate a Chinese calendar year with the Gregorian calendar year it overlaps most with.
(6) The lines come from a poem by Tang dynasty poet Du Fu called Song I Wrote After My House was Destroyed by Wind (茅屋为秋风所破歌). In it he conveys his lament for all the homeless and unsheltered masses in the empire.
(7) These eight characters (奉天承运皇帝诏曰) appear at the beginning of imperial decrees. Contrary to popular belief and some media portrayal, they don’t appear on every single message from the emperor. Firstly, they appear only on public declarations to all the people (this is what 诏曰 means). Secondly, the format was popularized by Zhu Yuanzhang and most frequently seen during the Ming dynasty, with some continued usage in the Qing dynasty. In any case, there’s no problem with the show’s usage here.
