it's amazing what the combination of good voice actors and good direction can do. Soo many games consider voice acting as an afterthought, and never even consider the need for professional direction. But this would have been a fraction of the game it is without those brilliant performances
For some real world context, this story is probably inspired by the Piper Alpha disaster. Piper Alpha was an oil rig in the North Sea north of Aberdeen that caught fire, exploded and collapsed over the course of one night in 1988, killing 165 of the 166 workers on board and two rescuers. An inquiry found the accident was caused by inadequate maintenance and safety procedures being ignored. Although predictably, the company responsible was never actually held accountable. It was the biggest loss of life of any oil or gas rig accident in history
The fact that everyone else aboard died of having their arms ripped off and their guts pulled out...but Roy somehow managed to die the mundane death of the diabeetus.
Honestly ketoacidosis is arguably a much more fuckin rough death than what happened to most of the guys who actually died (although probably not as bad as the ones who were all arguably still alive).
I'm still kinda grappling with suspending my disbelief on that. He was fine less than 24 hours ago. How bad is his diabeetus? And I agree with Tom and Lyds. The man was still breathing (barely) when you get to him, fucking inject him. At least TRY it.
Especially in chase scenes, it can be really hard to see the obvious. You're looking around desperately instead of just looking ahead. Very easy to miss the most obvious shit.
Rumor has it, if they didn't stand there for an hour wondering how to get out of the room with the insulin, while staring at the answer the entire time, Roy would still be alive.
If he was dying of low blood sugar, insulin would have killed him faster, and I'm not positive but it's harder to die of hyperglycemia in a short time than hypo
@@al145Well, you NEED insulin to correct hyperglycemia (since type 1 diabetics can't make enough naturally), and if left untreated for long enough leads to acidic blood known as ketoacidosis. Your organs start shutting down basically as your body makes last ditch efforts to save you. I believe what happened to Roy and his decline through the day is actually a pretty decent depiction from what I've read. If he was low all he'd need is to eat something, high he's big time fucked without medical intervention.
I felt the whole running back and forth repairing one thing after another was there to show that the crew was doing everything in their power to try and keep the rig afloat in order to survive. It does feel quite "like a game" with a constant string of objectives, but it does make sense a collapsing oil rig would constantly get new issues that has to be fixed to keep the crew alive.
The downside to that is that it left very little time to get to know the characters, really. It kinda undercut the effects of the deaths, imo. It kinda made the scenes feel like they were going "Feel sad here!" and I'm like "We've had, what? Two conversations with Roy?"
The running back and forth to put out fires in desperate hope really hits me hard. That McLeary and the others are going through so much and losing life and limb, and I realized part way through that no one would know how much they had to go through. No one would know that Brodie died a hero, or that McLeary accomplished Herculean feats, just to sacrifice himself to save his family. At the end of the day, the rest of the world probably just believes that they all died at once in an oil rig explosion due to negligence.
It does feel like the entire game was designed to drag you around the rig so that you can look at the weird flesh goop and how it changes/grows in a specific area each time you're there, and I think it holds up actually.
I'm a big fan of the ending of this game, it nails that sense of hopelessness and desperation that defines cosmic/eldritch horror. There is no escape, all you can do is destroy it all and pray that that's enough to hold off the monster.
RE the criticism that it's too long, I think a major goal of the game is to see everything twice, once before the shape colonizes a space and once after it's spread through the walls, and made everything broken and hopeless. just like you encounter a monster once and escape it and think you'll survive, and again and kill it and become convinced you'll die too. Maybe T and L didn't enjoy that, and they missed some of the monster corpses-gibbo in the water tanks, raffs half out of the bell-and only mentioned seeing a monstered space for a second time while joking about the showers-but I thought this was quite powerful! It *had* to be that long to nail that arc, and earn its climax.
If anything, I think it's too SHORT. There wasn't enough time to build up the characters to make the death scenes really hit home. Idk, maybe I just wasn't paying attention, but I felt like our big scene with Roy was really a case of "tell, don't show". Like, we know Roy is important to Caz, but we barely interact with him in the game itself. Brodie and Finlay, even less. I don't know a damn thing about Brodie. Hell, it even seemed like they tried to make Rennick's death impactful and you don't even SEE it.
the series was amazing , one of the best horror games of the year .. hope we get other horror games on the channel after Silent Hill and Stil Wakes the Deep
I also really liked the design of the organism. The colour patterns remind of oil on a water surface in the sun, also that it's kinda bioluminescent is pretty fitting for a deep-sea organism. The turned humans with the tendrils and tentacels also seem like very adapted for moving on the seafloor.
10/10 voice acting, visuals, setting and direction, 4/10 gameplay i pretty much agree with you guys, the only thing being that - for this very specific setting - it makes sense to have to run circles around the rig multiple times, trying to fix things. i do wish the fixing was more involved and puzzle-ly at times, like tom mentioned, usually the biggest hurdle was getting to the problem area, rather than fixing the problem. also someone else mentioned too, that we hardly got to know the other characters and thus there was less emotional impact at their deaths and i agree to that too. a possible solution would be to meet and interact with them at the problem areas at first, helping you fix things, like Finlay did in one instance, then later finding them dead or turned into flesh statues or monsters as you are on your way to fix something else. they mostly just told us other characters died, over the phone not showed us, really. meeting Finlay and Brodie was a breath of fresh air, making it feel like we arent the only person remaining on the rig. should've done that with more characters.
honestly really liked this game, i dont really get everyone shitting on the ending though. It felt pretty clear caz wasnt making it off the rig, especially after roy died. i was expecting him to start to turn into a monster before he self sacrificed but what we got still made sense. like how was he actually going to escape? boats were fucked, helicopter was fucked, support boats were likely not going to come fast enough. the only thing i actually didnt like was that finlay called caz a coward and to "for once be brave" after he just spent literally an entire day running around the rig like an action hero, and even refused to leave roy behind despite it being the safer option. like my guy was not a coward.
Loved this series. Even though, as you both remarked, there was a lot of repetition in the gameplay it never felt repetitive as a viewer. The story, the voices and the banter from both you and Lydia kept it really engaging. Really, really enjoyed this. Great work.
The phone call from "Suze" with the siren in the background might be a glimpse into the future, if Caz hadn't blown up the whole rig and therefore destroyed the organism, preventing it from spreading onto the mainland.
I really enjoyed you both playing this, and i am glad you both took the seriousness of the story well towards the end. It was absolutely sad but incredibly powerful, moving and generally a fantastic story.
You know, we all hate when games hold player hand, but after witnessing how Tom misses big hole in the wall he supposed to climb through i start to think that hand-holding put in game is not without some justification. Sorry for bad english.
to be fair to this game, it has an option to turn off the yellow paint. it still wasn't enough for these two though lmao. i don't come here for great gameplay, i come for the jokes between them and to watch them get scared, so i really don't mind anyway
Do we? I have never turned off the yellow or lamented the follow the light design. Most of us don't have time to wander in the dark. Let's players also have to be entertaining so why begrudge them 😂
I have literally never seen better voice acting in any media in my life. It was absolutely fantastic and the writing was also brilliant. The story was so interesting and had such a sad ending but it ended really well. I can definitely understand the gameplay feeling repetitive but besides that it’s an incredible game.
I can see why the constant back and forth could get tedious, (especially if the play the whole game in one sitting) but it may be that was intended to show us how drastically these environments can change. I feel like the mechanics light gameplay is intentional, so the narrative isn't in danger of being upstaged. It strikes me that the gameplay is really just a vehicle for the story; the same could be said of Alien: Isolation, but the latter has slightly better pacing, and a wealth of pre-established worldbuilding compared to this original IP. Conclusion: Very good walking sim/horror game, excellent story, magnificent VA.
You can tell the devs wanted to tell a story, and that's why there wasn't really choices, and if you fail the punishment wasn't too bad. Sometimes that is all a game like this needs to be imo, a story where you press some buttons along the way
From a writer's perspective I have to say I am happy about the resolution that Caz always ran away and finally had to be brave and take responsibility in order to save humanity innit :)
It's so weird to me that they did all this research to understand oil rigs, and how they work, and what you would have to do in this situation, and did absolutely no research at all about diabetes in the slightest despite it playing such a big role in the actual story.
It’s that kind of heroism in the face of futility, the running around to fix things is meant to feel pointless. Though I agree it needed more puzzle stuff, hell give more things for Caz to do as an electrician. And let me get to know the crew a bit better
It's easy to make fun of the yellow paint, but I was coming out of the hospital the other evening and it was pitch black. Without yellow paint on the steps down the hill I'd have missed them entirely, so I'm sold on them now.

Getting lost in Roy's room was painful to watch. As you come through the first vent, the following one is visible front and centre. But somehow twice you managed to instantly turn around and try to climb back up the way you came

This has got to be the most insane level of blindness I have ever seen. Even on the second go they didn't see the open vent in front of them, its even visible in the insulin pickup cutscene lmao
I really enjoyed playing this, id be too chicken to play it. The voice acting, script, and i didnt mind the 'running about' as you saw more of the crew who had met their fate. The graphics!!! The water looked amazing, the details with all the trinkets and clutter. *chef kiss*
Loved this series! I am far too much of a scardy cat to play horror games but want to see the story and appreciate your bants throughout to make it enjoyable. Please more collabs!
ok this just pissed me off like okay roy is not a spry as other people but you’re telling me he couldn’t travel like 50ft over the course of an hour of gameplay???
I mean... The rig was falling apart over itself and then there was a giant monster hunting over the area And Roy is a lot... Bigger... Than our protagonist. He'd probably not be able to crawl through the micro vents we do, so he'd have to find an actual path in that didn't have a giant murderous Rennick in the way, while dying without his insulin And he got really close in the end, he's stuck on the roof because Rennick is just downstairs guarding the rooms, but it takes Caz almost no time to get to him from the Insulin
Welp, that ended the only way it could have. I still wonder whether this might be a Secret World tie-in though. Especially considering the lab samples key.
The Chinese Room are infamously not great with actually making engaging gameplay. Machine for Pigs and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture. They focus a lot more on the story side instead, so, this is to be expected.
As a diabetic hearing how little they know about insulin and how it works makes me worried lol I hope these two never need to help someone diabetic around them like our beloved Roy.
Oh man, that ending gets me every time, it's just so tragic!! Absolutely love it though, such a great game, I'm glad you all enjoyed it for the most part, I had a great time watching you two discuss the very important topic of beans while also getting spooked, haha! I do hope Lydia's knee eventually felt better tho, cuz ouch, that seemed like it hurt a lot!!
Press F for Roy. Edit: As someone who fell in loved into a Scots family, this hit… pretty pre-credibly hard, I can’t quite imagine how it hits for anyone born to that history. But for all the jokes and janky gameplay loops, I cried hard at the end when the North Sea consumed them all, heroism and defeat alike. That’s,,, a little too hard hitting, maybe?
The voice acting when you reach Roy was really powerful, this game is so so well made

Great Series!

This was very fun. Thanks for the series. :)
As a diabetic hearing how little they know about insulin and how it works makes me worried lol I hope these two never need to help someone diabetic around them like our beloved Roy.
They’ll probably just try feeding them beans and jam
It really depends on what he was struggling with. Low blood sugar? Beans and jam might help. Insulin not so much.
Great game and great duo
I loved seeing yalls playthrough of this game! 🥰
If only Roy knew how much sugar they put in beans
Oh man, that ending gets me every time, it's just so tragic!! Absolutely love it though, such a great game, I'm glad you all enjoyed it for the most part, I had a great time watching you two discuss the very important topic of beans while also getting spooked, haha! I do hope Lydia's knee eventually felt better tho, cuz ouch, that seemed like it hurt a lot!!
Hello, only on episode 1, but just to let you know the playlist order is completely fucked x
That’s,,, a little too hard hitting, maybe?
they didn't realize big head was Rennick? have they never peeked at the captions lol
I think they might have forgotten that the boss was called Rennick
