Thank you, Carly, for presenting this episode on the 1965 Palm Sunday Tornadoes. I lived in Greentown, Indiana, but were visiting friends in Kokomo in the evening. It’s almost been 60 years now….unbelievable… and I still remember that day like it was only 10 minutes ago. Humongous hail stones had fallen all over the neighborhood where we were. Everyone was out picking them up, throwing them, talking about them. I remember my mom suddenly saying,….”where are all the birds??” We stopped playing and listened… you could hear nothing except some traffic. It was only then that we really looked at the southwest sky. It was absolutely pitch black with a greenish hue. We had no idea we were looking at a tornado in the distance. At that moment the tornado was most likely in Alto. We went inside before the storm reached us, and only a few minutes later, the lights went out (approx. 7:30pm) and my mom started yelling that it was a tornado and for us all to open the windows. I wanted to see it, and thinking I would see a Wizard of Oz-type tornado, that came out of the clouds and snaked across the sky, to come to a point on the ground and ruffle up some dirt. That’s not exactly what I actually saw, however. It was already on us, wood/2X4’s, paper, mud/dirt/, pieces of furniture, roofing, houses, etc., were flying everywhere. It was so very loud, and our ears popped until we were all holding our heads. We were lucky… the surrounding houses were all still standing. But only a block away, it was chaos. Dad and his friend had stopped at a McDonalds just down the street after picking up the friend’s son from golfing. The tornado picked up the car, spun it, set it back down, and rocked it aggressively. All the windows blew out except the windshield, so they were all covered in glass and mud. I have blocked out the memory of leaving our friends’ house and walking several blocks to where our car was. It was drivable, but totaled nonetheless. I only remember the screams and crying. When we got to Greentown, we couldn’t get to our house - too much damage everywhere. My brother and Dad took flashlights and went on foot to our neighborhood. It was practically all gone - our home was destroyed, and our beloved dog gone, as well. We were 10 miles from the nearest hospital/Kokomo, and we were at my grandparents’ home. It had not been hit. There was a knock at the door, and I opened it. It was the town funeral director, and another gentleman. He asked me if my grandparents were home - no, but then Mom walked up. They were old friends, everybody in our town knew everybody else. I noticed his tie was still tight around his neck, but his white long-sleeved shirt was rolled up on his arms and had blood on it. People had been bringing the dead and injured to the funeral home for assistance. He asked if we had any supplies they could have, mom took him to gather whatever he wanted/needed. The other gentleman had a bucket and asked if he could get some water. Grandma’s house had a well. When my dad and brother returned, dad just shook his head and said, “it’s all gone. Everything is gone.” I’d never seen my parents cry before. Our dog was presumed dead. However, I received a phone call at school 11 days later. Our dog had returned. He was a mess, but lived. It was a toss-up whether he or I was the most hysterical when it stormed in the future. I know Greentown, and probably many towns all across the areas that were devastated, are having 60th Anniversary gatherings in April. Our town lost 10 people that day, 4 of whom we’d seen earlier. One was a friend of mine, also 11 years old. The other 3 were from the same family. It was just a total nightmare. The feeling of helplessness and loss was overpowering. I can’t believe I’m still here…thinking of and talking about that tornado that changed all of our lives, so so many years ago.

My dad was on a farm about a mile from the F2 that went past Watertown, WI. That tornado was 24 miles long, 3/4 mile wide, killed 3 people on the highway, and completely leveled a teacher's house (that damage led Tom Grazulis to suspect the strength of the tornado here was closer to F4). In my father's dad lore, he tells of how the wind was so strong, it was blowing the kitchen door in. My grandpa and uncle both had to put their weight into it to keep it in place. In retrospect, going to the basement probably would've been a better idea.

I met Ted, education above content. Carly never forget you are never alone in anything you do. My parents told me about the out break because they lived it. I became hooked at a very young age. It's nothing to fear if God wants me he can have me. Who's to say i won't get hit by a bus tomorrow, so seize the day. You came back to this field and if it wasn't meant to be it wouldn't be. Rarely find young folks these days that could do what you do so well with each video. I have 3 children, oldest is a pharmacologist, a son that's a forest/fish/wildlife specialist, and my youngest wants to be a doctor. Between my degree's and theirs we could fill a small gymnasium wall, they didn't care because I told them to do what ever makes them happy and made sure they got there. You seem to have gotten there so I can only estimate you were an ef3 around your family. I have gotten them watching you now. Your an example of "life isn't easy" but I still got there. Be proud of that.

The image of Midway twin tornadoes, showcases that there can be more than one tornado on the ground at the same time. Although some people think that there cannot be another tornado on ground at the same time while the other is cause havoc, it is possible for it to happen. But it is an extremely rare occurrence, especially with violent tornadoes with the 2014 Pilger, Nebraska twin EF4 tornadoes. An even even rarer occurrence is having two EF5 tornadoes on the ground at the same time, which happened during a tornado outbreak on March 13, 1990 in Hesstion, Kansas.

Your videos help with My trauma with tornadoes. In 2020 I was hit by a EF 1 tornado in Philadelphia PA, I was on vacation and there was a tropical system moving over the area which spawned multiple tornadoes. The damage was pretty bad from roofs ripped off to tree some over 100 years old lucky there where no fatalities. I felt guilty for having The least amount of damage but also felt lucky that it didn't damage The house more because March of that year we had a house fire. The following year(2021) hurricane ida hit the area and spawned 2 EF3 tornadoes one in Mullica hill NJ and one in Feasterville-Trevose PA. the one that hit Feasterville-Trevose nearly hit my neighborhood again but took a turn for a car dealership which collapse but miraculously no fatalities. Thank you for these wonderful videos they are a joy to watch!!!🤩🤣

My mother was on the north side and would always share her story through the years whenever it was too warm outside on Palm Sunday or Easter. My uncle Richard Gore was a newlywed and lived in Russiaville. They were closing on the house in a week so were not moved in yet. Houses on both sides were gone and their home was heavily damaged. 0:08 OMG Carly! I love your hair! That first clip a few seconds in was almost like a jump scare but in a good way, it looks beautiful on you! As someone who’s been obsessed with tornadoes since seeing Twister & Night of the Twisters (guilty pleasure and honesty still my favorite tornado movie lol) as a 6 year old and in the same Summer, I’ve been obsessed with Tornados and severe thunderstorms since. Unfortunately I grew up in Northwest Pennsylvania where they are pretty rare. Although the 1985 outbreak that led to the Niles, Ohio F5 had multiple F2-F3 Tornadoes within a couple miles of where I lived my entire life until I was out of High School. Unfortunately I wasn’t born until 1989 lol. Anyway, the whole point of that is that of all of the many creators on UA-cam who focus on Tornadoes, not just chasing but actually creating long form content analyzing storms from history and all the data that goes with them YOU ARE BY FAR MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE PERSON DOING IT.
Yeah the data and statistical information collected about tornadoes throughout history is cool, but what’s even more cool is the way you take the (often tedious and boring “numbers”) scientific statistical analysis and data to get an accurate scientific knowledge of the storm in question and then you find all the newspaper articles and as many personal anecdotes and stories as you can, and it’s clear you actually deeply care about the human impact of the storm. Then you take the scientific data and all of those news articles/anecdotes and build a great story that you also tell SO WELL.
I greatly appreciate your content. It has the best of both worlds. The scientific knowledge and fact that comes with science to be able to accurately describe and interpret what the storm was like, and the many, many more emotional experiences and evidence that came from the real people who were there when it happened. Plus your voice soothes me, and you just seem like super genuine and caring and REAL.
Keep it up. I truly believe everyone should be watching your content.

Thank you so much for this recent upload, Carly. It's great to see you again. I hope I wasn't insensitive to anyone's beliefs, but I once was an atheist and now I'm openly Christian officially with the United Church of Christ at my UCC church in North Carolina. I love the attestations including the very testimonies with the people of the Jarrell tornado who said they saw Jesus' imagery basically in the photo of its rope stages if flipped upside downwardly. It was Jesus letting everyone know that he took 'em all back home with him as it's been said of that picture. Thanks so much for this, Carly. The greatest thing we can do's to provide God's perfect omnibenevolence to this world. I hope you're all doing very well. God bless.

Thank you, Carly. This is a significant video presentation. My roots are in northern/central Indiana. On that day, one of my aunts & my grandmother left my parents’ home in northern Illinois. They knew bad weather was around …. It is something we all lived with. ….. at the intersection of highway 30 where they were going to turn south heading to Logansport IN, they were stopped by police who checked them to make sure they were safe. Roads to the north toward South Bend/Elkhart area were closed, which my aunt didn’t know about. (Radio transmission was greatly interrupted by the storm system). He told them they could go south to Logansport but to be very careful as things were dangerous down that way but he didn’t know details. Logansport is😂 just a few miles west of Kokomo. Very near Greentown and Russiavilke. They did make it home safely, but had to make a mad dash inside the house from the car as the storms were vicious around them. The next morning it was shocking to realize the enormity of what had gone on.
Carly, I too have dealt with mental health issues for many years. (I’m 81 now!). So grateful for the growing understanding of the complexities of our brains and other systems that affect what we call ‘mental’ health. When I first reached out for help in the late 1970’s, antidepressants were just being used. My family doctor was so good & smart - at that time he was having so many young mothers come in with similar situations ,,, who, like me, were very active with children in school, volunteering at their schools & after school activities, etc. So he had taken an interest in these symptoms. Over the years as I came to understand my personal condition, I can look back and see it having popped up ever since I was a teenager periodically. Won’t go into my life story. 🤗 but have been blessed with good doctors & therapists who have managed my meds and taught me so much about taken care of that part of my health! Sorry you deal with it so young, but so glad you are taking care and appropriate steps whenever you need it. You have been in my thought for a while now, for some reason; I will continue to support and pray for you as you use your talent and gifts to educate and help other. 🥰🌻

Thank you for this amazing video and welcome back! You don't have to explain yourself, it's totally fine. I deal myself with seasonal depression four-five month per year during winter, I hate it somehow but I learnt to accept it as an unpleaseant part of my personality and refuse it to be taken over me completely. Please always remember: YOU are awesome, YOU are enough and YOU can reach every goal you want 🤗

Can you do a vid on the 28 March 1984 Carolinas Outbreak? Dr. Fujita studied it in great detail and likened the set up to 1925 I believe. I lived through the F4 that hit. Not a lot out there on that event that I can find. It was a rude welcome to the states for me a lad of 10 at the time.

@@carlyannawx You're welcome! I was in the Presbyterian church that got demolished in Red Springs, NC that night. It was insane the way the earth just sort of growled at you and we just got nipped not even a direct hit at the church and yet it ripped away the old bell tower among other damage. The town was flattened.

I don't know why it never clicked with me that this outbreak happened a little more than a week before my younger brother was born. I can't say that I remember the weather, even though living in the northern Chicago suburbs we were probably closer than my parents were comfortable with us being (one of Mom's aunts lived in McHenry at the time, too close to Crystal Lake for comfort!). I do remember a Scholastic magazine on the outbreak that I got a few years later in grade school and the twin tornados picture, which fascinated me.

I grew up east of Goshen, maybe 15 minutes and every time we've had some gnarly weather coming through I always think of this. We did have one touch down about a block from our house in the 2014 outbreak (that took down 3 trees that BARELY missed our house) and another during the wild 2024 outbreak. We were on the tail end of that gnarly derecho last summer and watching that coming towards us on radar was fascinating and terrifying. 2024 was pretty wild.
We're used to tornado sirens, but that's the worst it's ever been and everyone takes it pretty seriously, especially after the one that touched down in 2014 - the 2024 tornado only tipping over an Amish horse and buggy. Those were the only ones to touch down, let alone come even remotely close since Palm Sunday and the '74 super outbreak (this one an EF4 tracked just south of where we live now).
2024 surprisingly is what really pushed me to get an action plan together because of how crazy it was.

I was living in Toledo, Ohio and remember the tornado that hit that evening. It was after dark and we were 2-3 miles away. I was a teenager, but Mom looked at the power flashes and knew exactly what that meant. That one was an F4 and killed at least 16 people.
