Exactly what they deserved! It makes for a satisfying ending!
When I play evil characters, I still make characters who *like the party* if my character's an evil psychotic warlock, he's gonna protect the party, because they matter to him, I never have evil characters go against the party.
Plus out of character I ask permission to do stuff, like this douchey shop owner was massively overcharging us (literally 10 times the cost of anything) so I asked if I could kill him so we could take his gear, and they allowed it, cause even if their characters were good guys and would never want my character to murder the dude, out of character they really needed the gear.
That sounds like the best way to play that type of character!
