Actually, not very different from photos I've seen of WWII British desert boots, AKA "brothel creepers". They didn't have a very aggressive tread either. US roughouts, the low cut version had a less aggressive tread than some street shoes today. Maybe cleats aren't as useful in sand. All my boots did in Iraq was collect rocks.

i remember them as Chukka Boots ... i had two pairs around 1990-1992,
one pair had 5 eyelets, looked like these but had a more regular horse shoe type sole,
the pair i had with soles similar to these only had 3 eyelets, they seemed very basic even at the time. I dont remember the price but they were £15 to £25 range.

At Al Jubail, Gulf 1, we were issued similar by the RAF as a gift. We were army working in the port offices.

Also check out South African and Rhodesian troops, in particular the special forces. Very similar looking boots used quite often.

A former conscript in one of those two armies used to wear what we termed his “desert boots” at college (along with other bits of his uniform). There looked and no doubt were hugely superior to the desert boots your average Brit wore; soft leather calf length with a hard sole.

I have photos of my father’s serving in the Middle East in the 50s and the desert boot seems quite ubiquitous amongst the servicemen. No wonder we ended up wearing Clerks desert boots as children in the 1960s and very comfortable they were too. Fairly standard wear off duty too amongst the adults, in the mess, etc too as I seem to recall.
