Carving the House Greyjoy coat of arms

  • This wall shield is my interpretation of how the wood carved Crest belonging to the House Greyjoy of Pyke would look like.
    The giant squid turned upside down is a impressive sigil and its shape is pretty cool with all its 10 arms spread out against the background.
    A suiting animal to their motto: We Do Not Sow (we take what is ours).
    In Game of Thrones the House Greyjoy of Pyke has a rather rough medieval resemblance and I wanted this sigil to feel the same with a rough surface and a uneven and worn out background, rectangular as if it had originally been part of an interior but now dismantled and on its own, rather than the classical shield shape. It is carved in swedish oak.
    Music: Adrian von Ziegler

    I was a sculpture major and loved wood but couldn't even fathom attempting this! I would buy one in a heartbeat! Outstanding!

    This is stunning, a level of craftsmanship you don't see very often anymore. Well done sir.
    Would you ever consider staining the background in a slightly darker shade so the squid pops out even more? I love the detail you put into it and I feel like it would make it pop.

      The bloke know how to sharpen the tools razor sharp. I know the general rule is carve away from your body. But in the action and inspired ... But make sure it cuts through maple like a hot knife in butter. ( Use proper angle for the type of wood also).

    Nice work, White Oak is okay for carving. It's hard but it's way less a bitch than Red Oak, the soft grain is a nightmare. I too use a router to hollow out flat spaces. Meh, only the Purist will say it's not proper to use power tools. But, it's the difference between carving a sculpture and doing sculpture. In the end it's the same result, one is faster.

    • @goognamgoognw6637
      @goognamgoognw6637 6 років тому

      it also depends on how dry the wood is. I have a very dry piece of white oak and it's really hard to carve.
