Carving the House Greyjoy coat of arms

- This wall shield is my interpretation of how the wood carved Crest belonging to the House Greyjoy of Pyke would look like.
The giant squid turned upside down is a impressive sigil and its shape is pretty cool with all its 10 arms spread out against the background.
A suiting animal to their motto: We Do Not Sow (we take what is ours).
In Game of Thrones the House Greyjoy of Pyke has a rather rough medieval resemblance and I wanted this sigil to feel the same with a rough surface and a uneven and worn out background, rectangular as if it had originally been part of an interior but now dismantled and on its own, rather than the classical shield shape. It is carved in swedish oak.

I was a sculpture major and loved wood but couldn't even fathom attempting this! I would buy one in a heartbeat! Outstanding!
This is stunning, a level of craftsmanship you don't see very often anymore. Well done sir.
Would you ever consider staining the background in a slightly darker shade so the squid pops out even more? I love the detail you put into it and I feel like it would make it pop.
What is dead may never die!
Outstanding work!!!! Cheers from Uruguay
very nice carving..
Duuuuude... the suction cups.
hell yeah, dude. well done!
This is amazing!
amazing skill you have there,do you use stop cuts at all?i ask because you seem to have a very confident use of fthe chisels/gouges,totally fantastic carving
The bloke know how to sharpen the tools razor sharp. I know the general rule is carve away from your body. But in the action and inspired ... But make sure it cuts through maple like a hot knife in butter. ( Use proper angle for the type of wood also).
This is oak not an easy wood to hand carve like basswood. This guy is no beginner.
That is a wonderful carving! Especially in oak! That is tricky to work with. Keep up the great work!
Very nice! What angle bevel do you sharpen your gouges for Oak? Also what sweep is your wide gouge? Thank you.
no different as long as it's sharp. 3 ?
Did you stain this afterwards?
Yes, now it is black.

You are so talented. I wish I had some artistic ability to be able to wood carve. Sadly, I can't even draw a stick figure. Haha!

We do not sow
Riktigt snyggt!
Trodde ek var för hårt att skulptera i men ser lätt ut för dig!
May i ask what kind of wood you are using for carving? I have worked with Olive wood so far but it's not easy to carv. Can you tell me?
fresadora manual
olive wood is a very hard wood. Usually basswood. And read the descrption before asking questions.
Does anybody know which type of wood he is using?
anybody knows who read the description.
Great work! How long did it take for you to finish this piece?
Beautiful craftsmanship!
Nice work, White Oak is okay for carving. It's hard but it's way less a bitch than Red Oak, the soft grain is a nightmare. I too use a router to hollow out flat spaces. Meh, only the Purist will say it's not proper to use power tools. But, it's the difference between carving a sculpture and doing sculpture. In the end it's the same result, one is faster.
it also depends on how dry the wood is. I have a very dry piece of white oak and it's really hard to carve.
The detail...wow. Good job
Fine work, well done 👍🏼😊
very well done.
Great carving
Är detta ett fritidsprojekt eller ett beställningobjekt?
Beställning, men jag lär göra en åt mig själv också.
Christer Björkman Hello. You are using the machine is called what name? Can you tell me? Thank you!
