    Comorbidities are the conditions that patients “bring with them” when they are admitted to a hospital and continue to require some type of treatment or monitoring while in the inpatient setting.
    Complication: A condition that arises during the hospital stay that prolongs the length of stay by one day in 75% of the cases
    The presence of a major complication or comorbidity (MCC) or complication or comorbidity (CC) generally representative of a patient that requires more resources; therefore, hospitals are paid more to care for these patients. Greater specificity in documenting the patient’s diagnosis allows the coder to select the diagnosis code which most accurately reflects the patient’s condition resulting in assignment to the appropriate MS-DRG.
    A lower-paying DRG for the principal diagnosis without any comorbid conditions or complications.
    A medium-paying DRG for the principal diagnosis with a not-so-major comorbid condition. This is known as a DRG with a CC or comorbid condition.
    A higher-paying DRG for the principal diagnosis with a major comorbid condition, known as a DRG with an MCC or major comorbid condition.
