Because this is the only time my time taking greek lit has come in handy. And now i have to share my favorite telling of this myth is below
Because of her beauty Poseidon raped Madusa in the temple of Athena. The punishment for having sex in Athenas temple was typically death, but seeing what had happened to this girl Athena spared her and made her a gorgon. Madusa then had the ability to turn men to stone and they would never harm her again.
Thats a way better story than having her written as some creepy lady who "baits" dudes with a pretty face until she turns them into stone for fun

So she was blamed for being raped AND punished for it. UGH. I wish your version was the true version. But it seems there are a lot of Greek myths about gods punishing mortals for no good reason. :/
