Im all in for upgrading to smart house. However, I don't think we are there yet. For example I think its more of a burden to have to change batteries in like the lock and the trashcans compared to just open it manually or something. The auto trashcans are nice, but then there is special bags and stuff. I think the trashcans need to be more advanced with like maybe some smell reduction liquid that automaticly spray them or something. And the door lock, what happens if power goes out? I also find it tedious to open an app on my phone every single time I need to control something. I have app control on my heatpump, and I stopped using it because I prefered the remote control. Suggestion to smart trashcan would be a tube that goes from kitchen to the outside and a box outside so the trash is never inside. Can be some smart stuff there as well sure, with sensors etc. For the heatpump, I suggest a device that attaches to your body like a smartwatch or necklace etc, with sensors, that makes the heater control the temp based off how you feel. If you are cold even though temp is fine, it might bump it automaticly up accordingly. If you exercise, it will take it down.
Josh I'm curious to know how you made out with the August lock beyond the comments made in the video? I'm about 18 months in an disappointed with reliability particularly with the Auto-Unlock feature which was the main reason for purchase. Basically it works 50% of the time, sometimes the unlock delay is long enough to manually enter the house and lock the door. Auto-Unlock times out if you're returning home, enter then leave the geofenced area (i.e. getting gas on the way home) or just stop to talk to a neighbor up the block for 20 mins (remaining in the geofence) before pulling into the drive way, at which point you'll get a notification that Auto-Unlock failed. The other issue is reliability in the winter, I installed the device on an unheated garage side door. When outside temps fall below 30 the lock constantly logs open/close events in the app, lock/operation from the app work most of the time. After a lot of back and forth with August support they said that the device is only rated down to 50 degrees which would rule out installation in most of the US! Nowhere is this mentioned in the spec. Not ready to give my keys up just yet.
Yeah I should have expanded a bit on why exactly I have it. Mainly its to check and see if the door is locked or if I forget my keys, I can still get in. The Auto-Unlock feature didn't work reliably for me. It would unlock but by the time I'd reach the door it locked again. I figured this was because I was climbing stairs up to my door. I haven't given up my keys either tbh, I just like having it to see if the door is locked or not and as a backup way to get in. - Josh
Thanks for the video, just found you, and I have a question. My cellar lights (5) are controlled by a lutron switch with a motion sensor. It is not wifi capable as far as I know. It works great coming from upstairs. However when I enter the basement thru the bulkhead it is very dark. I would love to put a sensor on that side of the basement, but I dont know how. Any help/siggestions?
I love your videos and the idea of smart home . I have one issue that i really think you have an answer that i don't know . I bought about 20 smart items (bulbs, switches, etc) my problem is that if i want to change different wifi company or even change the wifi i will have to reset 20 items one by one which is Very annoying. Am i doing something wrong ? Or is it because i buy from different companies (some i bought from ali expess )? I want a selution where i change one and hopa all changed automatically. Thanks
cool video as always. super helpful. about the switchbot button, it actually connects through bluetooth to your phone and to the hub. but overall, great video.
Your smart apartment looks a lot like my smart apartment. I have a mixture of Smartthings, Google Nest, and Phillips Hue. And like you, I rarely touch a light switch.
Actually, I currently am reviewing home assistant green, but because it’s something I’m more evaluating right now vs actually choosing to use, I cut that segment from the video. Thx for the recommendation though! - Josh

1:55 kinetic energy? Now that's black magic 😂
Yep! The mechanical energy of you pressing the button generates enough power to send the signal.
Great job! I added your video to my smart home tour playlist
Awesome! Thank you!

Great video! Always loves these and find something I had no idea was a something that existed.
Very nice! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Great video, as someone who lives in an apartment you given me some ideas what to do at my place.

How many devices? What’s the max devices does it really support and what speed internet is required? More than 80?
Love your setup and your movie posters.

Yaaaasssss! Team #NoSwitch in the house! 👏 - Josh
Can you do the full review of the homey pro
He has one up if you haven't seen it!
I recommend you move your keys from the front door... A would-be car thief can steal the signal from the key fob from just walking by your front door.
Nice setup, but I could never. Juggling two different networks is so confusing
Maybe you should look into getting into Home Assistant for liking all of this to getter, HA for shot

It feels nice to be seen 😂. I’m glad I’m not the only one either! - Josh
