That scene with the ladies in the car pulling up and trying to help her is one of the most unsettling scenes in all cinema to me. It completely envelops the feeling of being in a toxic relationship, too isolated to ask for help or even hear the concerns of others. Shakes me to the core.
It’s so true. This song is quite grim and sad. But this song just goes to show you that these kind of things truly do happen for real. It’s quite sad. Those ladies in the car were so kind and concerned for her well being. But unfortunately they didn’t get out of there car and help the poor woman. They were so scared to get in the way of the abuser and toxic relationship. The mystery at the end of the music video makes me wonder if she drowned herself just to kill the man.
This song and video reminds me of abusive relationships and Narcissism. You keep trying to escape but they follow you everywhere and never leave you alone until they destroy you. Massive attack blows my mind, pure audiovisual art.
No, you missed the point, the part that is told after her friends stop the car and try to get her to go with them. She puts out her hand to tell her girls that she's trapping this guy. She's the one drawing him, like a Greek Myth Siren into the sea. The lyrics "it aint what it seems" We see him take the first step at the start of the video but that's our perspective, and the story told until the end does show that she is leading him to her.
I like to think at the end of the music video that the ocean behind her is showing us that she is luring him into a trap which is the ocean and She uses herself as bait to make him think he has power over her. But in the end she is victorious. I read that somewhere in an article about a destructive unhealthy bad abusive relationship. I like that interpretation of the music video.
I will never forget when this song came out. I was fresh out of an abusive marriage. This song kept me from this fate. This song helped me through. And still does as km healing.
Still in a bad situation. No physical abuse, but a wife who gaslights me along with the adult children. Turned me into a suicidal, depressed, shell of myself! I just hope each day I don't wake up, or better wake up and it was all a nightmare. No way out as a guy. Alimony and one adult child to support means lifetime of being a slave. Stay, and I'm a slave to everyone anyway. In all cases, I'm a servant after giving the kids and marriage my everything only to be turned into THIS. All I hope is that the laws in the U.S. change and stop letting females abuse males! All we hear about is the bad guys. What about the bad girls? :( Being verbally abused softly is just as bad as a punch to the face. I rather the punch!
@@Kai-td3mu Appreciate that. I'm learning each day that I don't 'need' to be counting on my wife's love to get me through a day. In fact, not sure I need any love to get through a day. Sadness comes from what was once had, but maybe never really there.

Love how this can be taken in so many ways: she is luring him to his death, he is pushing her towards hers or alternatively they are both destroying each other. Such a clever music video.
The man going into the water at the ending gave me chills. It's like even though she already "disappeared"/"escaped", it doesn't matter he's still going, she'll never escape. OMG amazing.

A few observations: --She almost always steps back second, and her first steps in the video come moments after his. She acts in reaction to him. --The camera focuses on her, and the friend speaks to her, not him. He may or may not be real, but she probably is, and she is also the protagonist of the "story." --He can see where he is driving her, but she cannot. This hints at intention behind his moving her into traffic and the sea. With that in mind, I don't think the interpretations of her luring him are well-supported by the video.
That's too literal an interpretation imho. She could be well aware of where she is leading him. For example, she can hear both the motorway and the sea. Either way, what an amazing song/film. Together they comprise a work of high art.
A possible reason, of course, is how male-centered the culture is, and all those numerous stories in which women lure men (with the Odyssey being the best example). I guess it is too hard for many even to assume that this time it's not about a guy. Quite sad.
She can move any direction she wants to anytime she wants to. He's not real, her friend talks to her but fails to see what she is looking at (the man).
@@yanas9871 I was thinking the same thing. I was surprised actually that people thought he was being led somewhere by her. I immediately thought that she was reacting to him and not the other way around.
props to this ed morris guy. brilliant piece - thats real art. strong clear haunting video yet wide open for anyone to interpret. for me - being obsessed w the impact humanity is thrusting unharmoniously upon nature of late the past century - I see this as the matriarchal movement leading man back where we belong. she's focused, she's not going to accept his attempts to be close again, she's not going to return to his home/lifestyle. we've got to get ourselves out of this mess we've created - this Frankenstein monster of waste/pollution making
I don't know why I have never heard this band until now, but by god this song, this video has grabbed me by the throat and won't let go. I am 64 and this is fucking haunting!!
I love everything about you guys♥ You're the fukin' top of the hill of our civilization. I'm sure, the greatest classical masters would be so proud of the evolution that music has got from you❤🔥
Perfectly depicts a true D/s relationship. She acts in reaction to him... never looking behind herself... always trusting him no matter when he pushes her. Even in the traffic and the sea... she hesitates at first but ultimately trusts in him... consumed by him. Don't fear me... come near me. He may push her limits farther than she's ever known possible, and she will let him because she trusts him.
bradford duke no she is not trust him . She wants to trust needs it that why she feels uncanny and she always under his influence at every steps. More like a kind of obsession
I wish they left Unfinished Sympathy in the song, or at least made an edit with it on the CD/spotify. Because it perfectly fits the mood, it's very clever.
Great video. The girl is in a bad relationship, she knows is not right, but she never decides to quit, even when there's a way out (her friends and a good old song) she keeps feeding that relation not running away and doing nothing. Eventually she drowns and then he.
all the script is about that, like in a relantionship when the love is greater than the control held by the guy the clip was made after the lyrics, that dont express that exact ideia, but Ed Morris take it to a worthy discussion... backward walkin, boys mockin like a gang around her, friends tryin to take her out of this situation, but she never quit... she do prefer to drown with all the love, hurt, submission, all over together... she is deep inside her relationship and the resignation that it brought there is even a Deja vu when they are walking trought the street/lawn... I am wondering if he raped her! I expect the message hit who need to see it ;x
The sequence with the car might not have been real at all. The girl must have been so scared that she formed an illusion of an rescue but even then she couldn't bring herself to escape which is highlighted by the line "It ain't what it seems". That must have been some very long and abusive relationship. You can see on her face how scared she is of the man. She would rather drown herself into the water than face with abuse again alas "We've been here before, don't fear me. Come near me" This song would suit perfectly for the trailer of Jessica Jones Season 2.
Now think of it as the guy trying to save her, and she is constantly refusing help right until the end, dragging him along for the ride. That is great art, when it means something different to someone else!
Can't argue any comment because it's a great video and it can have many meanings. I believe it's an abusive relationship. And there's a lot of women that knows where they are and don't act about it. I think that. It's not an "Abusement is wrong" ad, it's an "You are being abuse because you don't act about it you choose to be in that position" But again, this is art and it can mean anything.
It is a disturbing piece. Regardless of the artistic quality someone might not be able to handle the nerve(s) it would strike and might therefore dislike the video. Just sayin...
No matter how far she'd go, how much he'd try to reach her, he would be the one stepping forward and trying and she would be the one running away. He sais "Don't fear me" and "don't wanna lose you". This really spoke to me, people tend to shut eachother out of their deepest darkest depths and when they finally find a person who cares and will accept them no matter what, they run away instead of embracing their insecurities and going through life with them, accepting their help and using it to become better people. Instead, she ended up drowning in her own sorrow and took him down with her. Word of advice, know when to let go and hope to find someone that will appreciate all your steps forward, who will turn around and walk with you side-by-side
"So, we're, like, in this beach, and then there's naked Norman Reedus hugging a ghost baby, then getting hand prints all over his body, and, BOOM, aliens. Also, Reedus breathes through his skin." "Is this Metal Gear Solid?" "...Revendetta, yes." *can't handle the truth and slowly starts walking backwards to drown herself*
...& whilst everyone else desperately clings to the same Trap beats as each other, Massive Attack are still defining what it is to work outside of genres altogether. And the results are so much more captivating, intelligent, profound, unpredictable, innovative, evocative, heterogeneous & explicitly expressive. You get the feeling that all those genre-reliant tracks will be forgotten in 20 years, but Massive Attack shall be forever immortalized by their works.

Irreverent perhaps. Some people take issue with cobbling visuals together with audio work... Some people think music made with computers isn't music at all. When everyone gets to draw their own lines the world is better for it.
I'm so happy that a lot of people appreciate this masterpiece
this is one of the songs I never share bc I'm afraid they're gonna hate it and judge my taste in music
You have good taste
It's all about the music with ghostpoet and massive attack. All real music lovers can tell.
Never heard this kind of music. Man 2016 is going to be a crazy year for some creative shit.
So?
+Black Bear
that's why they're so great. they're not from today's moronic music scene. dig it
Are you here for the first time? Massive Attack making superb music like this since ages.
Wouldn't you rather if someone welcomed you to such music than thrash you for not hearing it earlier? Not everyone has the same possibility to come by it.
Milan Perišić
Actually you're right. It's good that people are exposed to new great music.
Nice post.
This is the most beautiful interpretation of you and me running away from our demons,And even she gets help ,she is running Tired,so manny as us
A most captivating music video/short film. Song and visuals work flawlessly together. Love!!!
I’ve been there - & now stayed single for over 14 years .. nice to have your mind to yourself ❤
This woman is a siren and destroys all that she lures to her.
And this right here is why Massive Attack will forever hold the number one spot in my heart...holy hell...enough said .

one of the most creative, meaningful and beautiful videos ive ever seen! well done!
So simple yet so dynamic. Lyrics and video. Unique to hear a slow rap video.
Aw, her fear of trusting were stronger than a fear of being drown in the ocean. So sad and deep emotional... Another masterpiece from Massive Attack.
Massive Attack + Ghostpoet=Perfect Match. Powerful, love it
Pure Art!
Massive Attack is life ......................honestly cruel, timeless energy and always beatiful ......
We've been here before, don't fear me
Don't stand by the door, come near me
We've been here before, don't fear me
Don't stand by the door, come near me
Quick thought, left or right
Could it be a strong case of fight or flight?
We'd never know you're slightly overworked
And self-conscious
Sweating beads of doubt
This can't be right
Whisperin' out, "This can't be right, right?"
This ain't like a DVD
Pretty from aftershave
I'm scared life will leave me
Strung out and needin' love
Surely I'm as overcome but brimstone won't come to [lungs?]
But I ain't done
Surely I ain't done
Oh, nah, nah
I ain't done
Oh, but my mind's on the run
Caused by your never-ending dream
And it ain't what it seems
It ain't what it seems
You know what I mean?
We've been here before, don't fear me
Don't stand by the door, come near me
Monster on the bed, regurgitating out
There's monkey on my bite
Pulling it like puppet strings, slow to react
Tell me what's the matter, love
Life's drive slow-mo
Front crawl in speedos
Fight against the rising tide
Breathe deep, never stop clawing at the light
Clinging on to what we got
... part of the Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy ...
Nah, and it ain't what it seems
It ain't what it seems
Baby girl, it ain't what it seems
Nah, it ain't what it seems
Too cruel to be mean
To be cruel
Don't wanna lose ya
Uh
We've been here before, don't fear me
Don't stand by the door, come near me
We've been here before, don't fear me
Don't stand by the door, come near me
Massive Attack are Gods. They carefully pics great musicians they want to work with, and lift them to a level those musicians would never dream of reaching on their own.. I mean, I love Hope Sandoval, and Ghostpoet and so on, but they become truly phenomenal when teaming up with MA. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A few observations:
--She almost always steps back second, and her first steps in the video come moments after his. She acts in reaction to him.
--The camera focuses on her, and the friend speaks to her, not him. He may or may not be real, but she probably is, and she is also the protagonist of the "story."
--He can see where he is driving her, but she cannot.
Finally! Exactly! She is a protagonist and she is the one forced to move, not the one, who "lures" him. How can people overlook it?
A possible reason, of course, is how male-centered the culture is, and all those numerous stories in which women lure men (with the Odyssey being the best example). I guess it is too hard for many even to assume that this time it's not about a guy. Quite sad.
She can move any direction she wants to anytime she wants to.
He's not real, her friend talks to her but fails to see what she is looking at (the man).
@@yanas9871 I was thinking the same thing. I was surprised actually that people thought he was being led somewhere by her. I immediately thought that she was reacting to him and not the other way around.
Man, this song and video give me goosebumps... So powerful
props to this ed morris guy.
brilliant piece - thats real art.
strong clear haunting video yet wide open for anyone to interpret.
for me - being obsessed w the impact humanity is thrusting unharmoniously upon nature of late the past century - I see this as the matriarchal movement leading man back where we belong. she's focused, she's not going to accept his attempts to be close again, she's not going to return to his home/lifestyle.
we've got to get ourselves out of this mess we've created - this Frankenstein monster of waste/pollution making
I don't know why I have never heard this band until now, but by god this song, this video has grabbed me by the throat and won't let go.
I am 64 and this is fucking haunting!!
Welcome to the world of massive attack.
Umm, a proper Dom would not push the sub into dangerous territories... I hope they have a safeword!! (O_o);
Clip maravilhoso. Música maravilhosa. Amor eterno ao Massive Attack
Best music video I've seen in possibly my entire life.
Come near me - Massive Attack
(Letra en español)
Hemos estado aquí antes, no me temas
No te quedes junto a la puerta, acércate a mí
Hemos estado aquí antes, no me temas
Pero no he terminado
Seguro que no he terminado
Oh, no, no
No he terminado
Oh, pero mi mente está huyendo
Causado por tu sueño sin fin
Y no es lo que parece
No es lo que parece
¿Sabes a lo que me refiero?
Hemos estado aquí antes, no me temas
[?] conducir a cámara lenta
Pero no he terminado
No he terminado
Seguramente, seguramente, seguramente debemos superar
Pero mi mente está huyendo
Mi mente esta en la carrera
Causado por tu sueño sin fin
No, y no es lo que parece
No es lo que parece
Cariño, no es lo que parece
No, no es lo que parece
Demasiado cruel para ser yo
Ser cruel
No quiero perder
Oh
Hemos estado aquí antes, no me temas
No te quedes junto a la puerta, acércate a mí
Hemos estado aquí antes, no me temas
No te quedes junto a la puerta, acércate a mí
this song and video is giving me chills.... it's out of this world
I wish they left Unfinished Sympathy in the song, or at least made an edit with it on the CD/spotify. Because it perfectly fits the mood, it's very clever.
I agree...my favorite part.
very happy to see/hear some new work from Massive Attack. Hope a US tour is in the pipeline, the last one was superb.
I see Possession (1981) film theme again. Voodoo in my blood (100% tunnel scene from the film), now Come Near Me... Anyway it is made cool. Like!
The film when the devil have a copulation with a girl? A kind of coachroach - scorpion?
yeah, it is :D
This video is paying homage to Possession, yes. The director confirmed this, and the easter eggs in the video.
Roman polinski.... Isabel adjani.. Frenche like me.
3:50 - Just stunning. The break is so simple and gets you like a virus but just so Massive Attack. Phew!
I love this band!!!!!!
This song and video is the most Great British thing I've seen, mAd respect to the artists behind this 🤜🤛
filmed in Southwick, Brighton, a mile from my house and i didn't even know!
Cheers Brighton, its the YANk from new England
+Brian J. Carnevale eyyyy, New England = best England, boy! Friendliness from Boston!
yep cos being in cornwall i know every single thing they film here. wyf you on about how would you ever know , twonk
Caravan club?
+James first rule of caravan club!
one of the beautifulst melodies i ve ever heard
massive love
massive attack is genius to make you feel something with each song
Deep in thought with this music
I felt this so deeply.
Great video. The girl is in a bad relationship, she knows is not right, but she never decides to quit, even when there's a way out (her friends and a good old song) she keeps feeding that relation not running away and doing nothing. Eventually she drowns and then he.
all the script is about that, like in a relantionship when the love is greater than the control held by the guy
the clip was made after the lyrics, that dont express that exact ideia, but Ed Morris take it to a worthy discussion...
backward walkin, boys mockin like a gang around her, friends tryin to take her out of this situation, but she never quit... she do prefer to drown with all the love, hurt, submission, all over together... she is deep inside her relationship and the resignation that it brought
there is even a Deja vu when they are walking trought the street/lawn... I am wondering if he raped her!
I expect the message hit who need to see it ;x
Definetly one of the most chilling videos I have seen!
Come near me"
This song would suit perfectly for the trailer of Jessica Jones Season 2.
Now think of it as the guy trying to save her, and she is constantly
refusing help right until the end, dragging him along for the ride.
Massive Attack and Ghostpoet - two of my favorites! Many thanks for the collaboration
watched this like 6 times this day. i honestly think people who dislike this have some serious issues.
Here here. BTW: my middle name is Dursun.
It is a disturbing piece. Regardless of the artistic quality someone might not be able to handle the nerve(s) it would strike and might therefore dislike the video. Just sayin...
Forgot how much I loved Massive Attack!
what a dramatic looks, so impressive.
bloody love Ghostpoet, a great collab even though i'm listening to it for the 1st time, both lps are imo.. ace!!
Word of advice, know when to let go and hope to find someone that will appreciate all your steps forward, who will turn around and walk with you side-by-side
that pulse, that pulse chill out me.......damn good..!!
We've been here before, don't fear me
Word. greatness, huh?

This song and video are perfection!
Why is Hideo Kojima intimidating that young woman?!
"So, we're, like, in this beach, and then there's naked Norman Reedus hugging a ghost baby, then getting hand prints all over his body, and, BOOM, aliens. Also, Reedus breathes through his skin."
"Is this Metal Gear Solid?"
"...Revendetta, yes."
*can't handle the truth and slowly starts walking backwards to drown herself*
That's not Hideo Kojima, it's a British actor called Jonathan Aris.
haha I think the same xD
there's no whales so couldn't be him
Reminded me a bit of a weird mix between Hideo and Jay-Jay Johanson:)
Oh Lord, what an exquisite masterpiece!
Is it reverse version of Daydreaming by Radiohead?
hehe good one
Walking backwards through doors
or Angel by Massibe Attack
The best music video of all time !
Damn! What a flashback @ 3:00! I wasn't expecting to hear Unfinished Sympathy.
Is this the trailer for - It Follows 2?
I love the sinister sounds of each and every of massive attack songs
...& whilst everyone else desperately clings to the same Trap beats as each other, Massive Attack are still defining what it is to work outside of genres altogether. And the results are so much more captivating, intelligent, profound, unpredictable, innovative, evocative, heterogeneous & explicitly expressive. You get the feeling that all those genre-reliant tracks will be forgotten in 20 years, but Massive Attack shall be forever immortalized by their works.
love it
MASSIVE!!! The persistent beat at the end! Awesome coupling of audio and video
