  • 4 Ways to Grow Lilacs! We were able to get our hands on established Lilac bushes and get a few cuttings that we are showing multiple ways to grow. We show a direct to soil type planting with the cutting, a plastic bag growing experiment with the cuttings. We also ordered a package of Miss Kim Lilac Tree seeds which take much longer to establish. We did a direct seed approach with soil. We also used the plastic bag to start the germination process.

I love lilacs so much! There are my absolute favorites, but I totally failed in propagating them. Hopefully this method will help me get some success this year!

My mother grew lilac bushes into lilac trees 😅 her rhodedendrons are also huge (taller than our one story home) thanks to the chicken poop she would sweep off the porch into the flower beds ( they took "free range" a little too far 😂 )

Love lilacs! My friend in BC Canada made lilac syrup. I love the smell also. We get them but not too many by our garage. Loved this. Love you are doing something you love and also incorporating it into your farm and products. Great info about propagation. I need to do this with ours. You’re inspiring me!

I love lilacs! I bought two plants last year - they are supposed to be tolerant of cold and drought AND clay soil - which I have all 3. So I planted them...they didn't really go - which I am sure is a soil issue and am thinking I'll dig them up and fix that this year. But, I'm anxiously waiting to see if they grow back this year! 😊👍💗 Thank you for sharing - if they are dead I'll have to buy more!

I've learned a bit about them . Lilacs need a little help initially . In our area where I planted in clay I just amended the soil around the
"Newbies " to start them out well . Lilacs will SEEK OUT A WATER SOURCE ONCE THEIR ROOT SYSTEM GETS STARTED .
I learned the hard way !
Water well at the base slowly .
Then leave it alone for a few days . Water only if needed .
      Best to You .!

Thank you for taking the time to put together this video on Lilac propagating! It popped up as I was scrolling through UA-cam on this topic. I just pushed the subscribe button. 🙂 We live on a hundred some year old fixer-upper acreage ourselves. Just noticed the Lilac bush that has been here since day one, is on its way out..wanted to try and get some new ones started before it's too late. Just curious, it's a year later now, what would you say was your most successful/ easiest way to get those started after the fact... Thanks! DM

I love lilacs and was giving one as a wedding present. My husband had to haul it home 69 miles from my old neighbor where I lived before we got married and he planted it in 90f weather in Sandy soil. We thought it was going to die but it’s still going 6 years later!

do you have an update on where the window worked to produce a root system? I'm trying to plant lilacs on my property but can only get ahold of cuttings. I did buy some Miss Kim bushes but I really want the bigger lilac bushes.

I love Lilacs! My Aunt had a couple of bushes in her front yard on the farm. Loved the smell. That was in Missouri. I live in CA now, so didn't know if I could grow here, would love to try though.

That is awesome! I was just reading about different varieties that don’t require a winter chill! You might be able to grow in your zone with the right variety! Thank you so much for watching!

❣️ Enjoyed this very informative and easily demonstrated your expertise in lilacs . I have 2 Boomerang Double Blooming Lilacs ( PW)
I live in zone 5 . I don't have a clue as to how to collect the seeds ?
Soil is alkaline , but, good soil .
I can't find any updates on your seeds , bare root to the sun also . Same Root hormone .
Have I missed updates along the way ?
Thank you for your long awaited Lilac video !

Thank you! We have not had a chance to do an update video just yet. We had the most success with cuttings. Recommend you grab a few cuttings from new growth. One of our friends was able to get a few suckers from hers that already had a root system started and planted those right into the ground and they took! Good luck!

They seem to do pretty well here! I think it is because the variety we use like some winter chill. I think there are other varieties you can get that don’t necessarily need that I just looked up a variety that does well and looks like The Palibin Korean Lilac is popular in your zone. Thank you for watching!

Is it necessary to put the seeds in the refrigerator for a time prior to the damp towel in the baggy method?

Im here cuz I want lilacs everywhere on my farm. As shade, wind break, snow drift breaks, astherics, etc. Honey bees arent excited about lilac as pollen or nector but bumbles LOVE them. That said, infusing honey with lilac is so good!! ❤. Thanks for this video.

Thank you for watching! Yes to all of the above! We will do an update video in the summer and show you what we are doing with ours! The seeds take too long highly recommend propagating or finding a donor plant you can get suckers from. We will be sure to share more! Take care 😀

Lilacs are my fav flower. I have 12 new leafy cuttings just from last week foraging. love this Video! lactulose from the lilac is a stool softener :P Cant wait to see how they do. I think its so cool we are both propagating Lilac! Did you ever get elderberry cuttings?

    • @MadAcreFarms
      @MadAcreFarms  2 роки тому

You are a wealth of knowledge Jilly!! We have a handful of elderberry bushes that we located but haven’t found one yet to get cuttings. We are thinking we might have one on our property that is established but not sure yet if the bush is actually elderberry so now trying to figure that one out! Thank you for watching!

I love lilacs, too. My mom just ripped hers out last year. I wish I'd gotten cuttings before she did. I didn't know. 😭😭 one was purple and pink and smelled like fruit loops (i LOVE the smell of fruit loops). I have 6 suspected lilac plants on my property and I hope they are.
The flowers are very good candied.

Hi there! They unfortunately did not take root. We found that you get better results when the tree is dormant. We are trying it again on our cherry tree due to a limb falling. The same steps are being followed. Keeping our fingers crossed! Take care!

I am in South Carolina and would love to grow these but I have not seen any around here. I’m sure someone has them. Any suggestions on type for this area? I also had these when we lived in PA and loved the smell…. Such memories! Thank you for sharing 😊

    • @MadAcreFarms

Thank you for watching! They definitely like the winter chill! Looking at your area there are some hybrids that don’t necessarily need the chill. Maybe look into Lavender Lady? Thank you for watching!
