"Cross-drop" was a common WW2 torpedo plane tactic. Two attacking groups splitting up and converging on the bows of a target ship, ideally about 90-120 degrees apart, and dropping a line-abreast pattern of torpedoes. That way, if the ship turned into one pattern to "comb the wakes" and thread between them, they'd be roughly broadside to the opposing pattern, and if they continued straight, they'd get hit along both sides. In the US it's known as "anvil" attacks, not sure if the Royal Navy air arm had a term for it or what that might have been.

An entire division surviving til the end and winning is what I call, a 3 vs 12 match with 9 decoys to help you stay alive long enough to give you the time to work your magic.
Cross-dropping was actually a thing in real life. The Japanese used it to sink HMS Repulse. Pan-Asian aircraft carriers were most definitely NOT a thing.

Being a regular viewer of the Mighty Jingles' game of throws series I can quite often hear Jingles in my head while playing the game, adding out of necessity comments like "that guy had a rush of shit to his brains", "five pence fifty pence" and so on. :D
He was flooding on that first damage control. I get why you might hold off in case you get set on fire, but flooding also limits mobility. Damge controling that gives you more mobility and even if you end up burning longer, if it lets you dodge a few more shells or even an entire salvo of shots from the BB behind you it makes more sense to opt for the possible burning.

I have ARP Takao, which is the hysterical Japanese anime chick version of the Atago, and it is a great ship. I run Mogami with the 155mm guns (Mogami Lite), and it is so much better than the newer tech tree light cruiser, Shimanto. Faster reload, better HE penetration (marginally), just a better ship. Kind of academic. This was a Tier VIII random battle. At least half my random battles in Tier VIII cruisers are Tier X or Starship, and Tier VIII cruisers are near useless. The bright side is that Bronze Ranked is Tier VIII, so I am running the many excellent cruisers that are near useless in Random Battles.
Funny, I'm listening to the tin cans book you recommended where a simultaneous cross drop is described as an extremely effective tactic used on one of the japanese cruisers at one point by a squadron of avengers, so it's hilarious to me that it must be "banned" in a naval warfare game

You know, Jingles, Atago has the best angles for torpedoes of any IJN cruiser or at least it did. You talk like it's a Myoko Holy Shit!! Jingles said "Full duration fire" Not "Permafire", I love English! That was a throw for sure!
I still believe that Wargaming should have made the Chokai, since out of the Takao class cruisers, Chokai retained its original superstructure, one of the most distinctive ever placed on a warship.
@@kristoffermangila When the IJN CL line was added, Wargaming should've moved Mogami over to that line with only the 155mm guns, and added one of the Takaos as the replacement tier 8 for the CA line.
In this case at least, there's a couple of factors allowing for carrier sniping. 1. The Sanzang actually has pretty bad AA by carrier standards (it only has a 3.5 km range) 2. The Yorktown (and the new line of "support carriers" in general) are very good at sniping other carriers since they have two tactical squadrons which don't care too much about AA.

Jingles moment - "He hasn't spotted the whole enemy Submarine". Actually Jingles he spotted it early on, is was about the 3rd thing he spotted and as it was on the surface it was probably what spotted him as it was about 4 1/2 km closer to him than the Mainz and 7 1/2 KM closer than the Rooke.
Jingles, you can't use Damage Control if there's nothing to "control". That torp hit either caused a flood or crippled something. Otherwise, just pressing the button just says "nothing to repair".
Jingles, if you are not on fire or flooding it will tell you that the consumable isn't needed and it won't activate. So if he used it, he was on fire/flooding.
watching games like this knowing that CV & subs are braking Warships is one of the reasons I switched to Warthunder & having a lot more fun playing their tanks & planes
The Skyraider was literally a flying dump truck. It could carry a phenomenal variety of ordinance, and at the end of WW2 could deliver on one engine the same bombload a B-17 did with four engines (although not with the same range as the Fortress, obviously.)😮

Horizons don't exist in WoWS, Spotting is a jiggery pokery of spreadsheet values and an undisclosed algorithm for borking them, "Radio Location" has nothing at all to do with the Transmissions being made by individual units but works *Exactly* like a passive hydroacoustic system would... the list is Endless, Jingles.
The thing with the original CVs: they had a counter. Step 1: Find a US cruiser with DFAA. Step 2: USN AA go BBRRRRTTTTTT! Step 3: Harvest the salt and tears from the CV drivers. But that takes teamwork and the CV drivers can't just faceroll the keyboard...
10:00 - The CV rework was put in place because RTS CVs could cross drop a single ship and there was nothing that ship could do about it. Anyway, let's watch as this CV cross drops a BB which can't do anything about it. 10:40 - Whoops, paused too soon.
Actually Jingles, you gave there the easiest solution to the spotting problem. Add a squadron of spotting aircraft to the CV. Maybe even let them have an ability to keep an area spotted without the possibility of attacking and nerve the spotting ability of the attacking squadrons
A-1 Skyraider bad ass. So many really great small planes in the prop era. My number one is the Dauntless, after that Black Sheep F-4U Corsair, P-51s Red Tails of course, and Vietnam Era 0-2 Bird Dog

All that talk about the Atago being the first premium cruiser and the carrier rework really makes me wish there were a way to go back to play one of those earlier versions of WoWs (Ideally with the modern graphics overhauls, but I'd take it even without that). Having a legacy version would probably get a few old grumblers like me to actually come back to the game.
The Takao Class Heavy Cruisers of the IJN are some of my all time favorite ships. They're absolutely beautiful. I bought an Atago when it first became available and in my very first game with it, I was detonated. Welcome to WoWs nub, get gud.
Let's talk about the Yorktown. Damaged in the Battle of the Corral Sea and reported sunk by the Japanese navy, her crew limped her back to Pearl Harbor. The damage was estimated to take 2 weeks to complete. Due to the impending Battle of Midway, repairs were wrapped up in 72 hours. During the Battle of Midway, the first attack from Japan on US carriers found Midway. Once again, the Yorktown was reported sunk. Her crew were so good, Yorktown was combat functional within an hour. The second wave of attack planes on carriers found Yorktown again. Once again, Yorktown was reported sunk. This time was telling. Two such attacks created a situation in which the captain was forced to give the order to abandon ship. However, she didn't sink. The fires burned out and she was still afloat. The next morning, the decision was made to attempt to tow Yorktown to Pearl Harbor. A Japanese sub spotted Yorktown in tow and dumped torpedoes into the easy target. Once again, Yorktown was reported sunk. This time however, the torpedos did too much damage. The Yorktown was deemed unsalvageable and finally sunk a day after the torpedo hits. So, when you are complaining about carriers being unsinkable in WoWs, this is an exception, but Yorktown was nearly unsinkable. The ship and crew deserve tons of credit. It took and survived several pounding before going down. That was damage other ships were spared.
Izmail used DC correctly, at least based on available info. By the time it ran out of charges, it was on 5k health, it would have been dead by that point if it had let early fires burn full duration.

Preventing one fire now versus one fire later is no difference, except slightly worse to wait. The one that kills you does less damage than an earlier one, meaning both that the earlier one is more efficient to prevent and that if you had let it burn, then the shot that set the later one would just kill you on its own. If you're going to take the damage at all, best to use your charges when you know you can.
You can see there towards the end of the battle when he uses his damage control when the wichita smacked him it disabled his engines so he popped the dmg control and then sadly was set on fire
Yeah cross drop/anvil attacks, a real world tactic that takes time to set up and isn't all that easy to time, can't have that in a game. But don't worry now you have unlimited aircraft and can't be deplaned anymore. I really miss the RTS mode, and yes I know I am probably the only one to miss it..
sorry, but Atago has the best strait launched torp angles of any IJN CA, She (along wither her sister Maya, and her ARP clones) are the only IJN CAs that can launch forward, as for the smoke curtains on CVs , the USN actually tried that during the interwar period,
The problem with spotting in a games is that you typically get an exact position, which was not the case when aircraft spotted enemy ships in real life.
Perseus was the one that slayed Medusa the Gorgon and saved Andromeda from the kraken. Theseus killed the Minotaur and became known the hero of Athens.
Cross drops weren't completely impossilbe to dodge, if your ship had decent rudder shift you could sometimes find a gap and turn through the first set adn the second set, especially if you had defensive aa up scattering the torpedoes...
atago player needs to learn how to fight on slow speed instead of full speed ahead, better to fight in main battery range longer than being out of range faster, plus reversing and going forward, as well as being more patient in the repair party
Eh....borderline case, I thought it was more a case of a missed opportunity rather than a Throw, having said that, I probably would have tunnel visioned in the same fashion as the Wichita Captain. Target lock is real kids
I wouldn’t mind CVs if they made a few changes. Fires should burn for a minute and you shouldn’t be able to launch aircraft if your deck is on fire. Also, getting within shooting range Of a BB should basically be instant death, I’d like to see plunging fire damage the flight deck as well. And they shouldn’t have so many planes, or make ship AA MUCH better. Just some thoughts.

This was truly a Game of Throws, they had 3 cap circles, if one of those Cruisers had ran away, they would have won.

I will say that the team/platoon/division seemed to well co-ordinate with each other, and that definitely did help.

You know, Jingles, Atago has the best angles for torpedoes of any IJN cruiser or at least it did. You talk like it's a Myoko Holy Shit!! Jingles said "Full duration fire" Not "Permafire", I love English! That was a throw for sure!
He even sees how he can basically throw the torps to the front, but still ignores it.
I still believe that Wargaming should have made the Chokai, since out of the Takao class cruisers, Chokai retained its original superstructure, one of the most distinctive ever placed on a warship.
@@kristoffermangila When the IJN CL line was added, Wargaming should've moved Mogami over to that line with only the 155mm guns, and added one of the Takaos as the replacement tier 8 for the CA line.
The Atago is a sexy looking ship. Especially the Black version.
In this case at least, there's a couple of factors allowing for carrier sniping.
1. The Sanzang actually has pretty bad AA by carrier standards (it only has a 3.5 km range)
2. The Yorktown (and the new line of "support carriers" in general) are very good at sniping other carriers since they have two tactical squadrons which don't care too much about AA.

Actually Jingles he spotted it early on, is was about the 3rd thing he spotted and as it was on the surface it was probably what spotted him as it was about 4 1/2 km closer to him than the Mainz and 7 1/2 KM closer than the Rooke.
Jingles, you can't use Damage Control if there's nothing to "control". That torp hit either caused a flood or crippled something. Otherwise, just pressing the button just says "nothing to repair".
Jingles, if you are not on fire or flooding it will tell you that the consumable isn't needed and it won't activate. So if he used it, he was on fire/flooding.

The Skyraider was literally a flying dump truck. It could carry a phenomenal variety of ordinance, and at the end of WW2 could deliver on one engine the same bombload a B-17 did with four engines (although not with the same range as the Fortress, obviously.)😮

Horizons don't exist in WoWS, Spotting is a jiggery pokery of spreadsheet values and an undisclosed algorithm for borking them, "Radio Location" has nothing at all to do with the Transmissions being made by individual units but works *Exactly* like a passive hydroacoustic system would... the list is Endless, Jingles.

Step 2: USN AA go BBRRRRTTTTTT!
Step 3: Harvest the salt and tears from the CV drivers.

Actually Jingles, you gave there the easiest solution to the spotting problem. Add a squadron of spotting aircraft to the CV. Maybe even let them have an ability to keep an area spotted without the possibility of attacking and nerve the spotting ability of the attacking squadrons

A-1 Skyraider bad ass. So many really great small planes in the prop era. My number one is the Dauntless, after that Black Sheep F-4U Corsair, P-51s Red Tails of course, and Vietnam Era 0-2 Bird Dog
Black Sheep and Red Tails were squadron nicknames, not aircraft names, and the Cessna O-1 is the Bird Dog, the O-2 is the Skymaster.
@@Muddfoot01 very nice! Yes I was aware that the red hills were a squadron and they had a specific delivery I’m saying that’s how I would dress mine in honor of them. And yeah the black sheep squadron was a unit made infamous by the television show. I did get the nomenclature for the bird dog wrong you are correct. It’s nice to see their other aviation fans out there.

All that talk about the Atago being the first premium cruiser and the carrier rework really makes me wish there were a way to go back to play one of those earlier versions of WoWs (Ideally with the modern graphics overhauls, but I'd take it even without that). Having a legacy version would probably get a few old grumblers like me to actually come back to the game.
The Takao Class Heavy Cruisers of the IJN are some of my all time favorite ships. They're absolutely beautiful. I bought an Atago when it first became available and in my very first game with it, I was detonated. Welcome to WoWs nub, get gud.

Let's talk about the Yorktown. Damaged in the Battle of the Corral Sea and reported sunk by the Japanese navy, her crew limped her back to Pearl Harbor. The damage was estimated to take 2 weeks to complete. Due to the impending Battle of Midway, repairs were wrapped up in 72 hours. During the Battle of Midway, the first attack from Japan on US carriers found Midway. Once again, the Yorktown was reported sunk. Her crew were so good, Yorktown was combat functional within an hour. The second wave of attack planes on carriers found Yorktown again. Once again, Yorktown was reported sunk. This time was telling. Two such attacks created a situation in which the captain was forced to give the order to abandon ship. However, she didn't sink. The fires burned out and she was still afloat. The next morning, the decision was made to attempt to tow Yorktown to Pearl Harbor. A Japanese sub spotted Yorktown in tow and dumped torpedoes into the easy target. Once again, Yorktown was reported sunk. This time however, the torpedos did too much damage. The Yorktown was deemed unsalvageable and finally sunk a day after the torpedo hits.
So, when you are complaining about carriers being unsinkable in WoWs, this is an exception, but Yorktown was nearly unsinkable. The ship and crew deserve tons of credit. It took and survived several pounding before going down. That was damage other ships were spared.

Izmail used DC correctly, at least based on available info. By the time it ran out of charges, it was on 5k health, it would have been dead by that point if it had let early fires burn full duration.

- I better watch the initial commercial to the end (or let it simply run completely unseen to the end)
- I should click the link to get to the advertiser (though immediately leave the site, as I don´t intend to buy anything
- I should add a comment to every video
- do something on your proposal

Every time you said Theseus my brain said Feces and my inner ten year old giggled.
Preventing one fire now versus one fire later is no difference, except slightly worse to wait. The one that kills you does less damage than an earlier one, meaning both that the earlier one is more efficient to prevent and that if you had let it burn, then the shot that set the later one would just kill you on its own. If you're going to take the damage at all, best to use your charges when you know you can.
cross drop was the tactic taught in the US Navy
You can see there towards the end of the battle when he uses his damage control when the wichita smacked him it disabled his engines so he popped the dmg control and then sadly was set on fire

Yeah cross drop/anvil attacks, a real world tactic that takes time to set up and isn't all that easy to time, can't have that in a game. But don't worry now you have unlimited aircraft and can't be deplaned anymore. I really miss the RTS mode, and yes I know I am probably the only one to miss it..
sorry, but Atago has the best strait launched torp angles of any IJN CA, She (along wither her sister Maya, and her ARP clones) are the only IJN CAs that can launch forward, as for the smoke curtains on CVs , the USN actually tried that during the interwar period,

I hope we eventually get to see ships like Type 42 aka Sheffield class guided-missile destroyers and American Arleigh Burke GMFs.

The problem with spotting in a games is that you typically get an exact position, which was not the case when aircraft spotted enemy ships in real life.
Perseus was the one that slayed Medusa the Gorgon and saved Andromeda from the kraken. Theseus killed the Minotaur and became known the hero of Athens.
I wouldn't really call this a throw but it was a fun game to watch👍
Yep, CV at the end vs no CV is a verdict unless you keep up the odda for your team continuously.

Cross drops weren't completely impossilbe to dodge, if your ship had decent rudder shift you could sometimes find a gap and turn through the first set adn the second set, especially if you had defensive aa up scattering the torpedoes...
atago player needs to learn how to fight on slow speed instead of full speed ahead, better to fight in main battery range longer than being out of range faster, plus reversing and going forward, as well as being more patient in the repair party
Eh....borderline case, I thought it was more a case of a missed opportunity rather than a Throw, having said that, I probably would have tunnel visioned in the same fashion as the Wichita Captain. Target lock is real kids
I wouldn’t mind CVs if they made a few changes. Fires should burn for a minute and you shouldn’t be able to launch aircraft if your deck is on fire. Also, getting within shooting range Of a BB should basically be instant death, I’d like to see plunging fire damage the flight deck as well. And they shouldn’t have so many planes, or make ship AA MUCH better. Just some thoughts.
