Wow..........This symphony is simply unbelieveable. I'm at loss for words. wow. Reineke, you are awesome. wow. I wanna play this so badly!!!!!!!!!!!! I love the chord at the end. (that was random.)
I'm not really a connoisseur of classical music though not a complete beginner either so you can weight my opinion accordingly. Actually, I came across this while Googling "ending on an unresolved chord" in search of the meaning of such an ending. I think it need not be foreboding but rather it can be read as a pointing to the future unwritten which is really neither foreboding nor promising though pessimists and optimists may insist on one or the other. I like it. Thanks.
Our conductor explained that this symphony was written for the century of S.Francisco earthquake and this 4th movement describes the morning after (it came at about 5am). A priest celebrated the Mass in the ruins with a trumpet playing (described with the trumpet solo). The remaining part describe the rebuilding and the hope of people, but final chord (BbM7) and gong+bass drum roll (here not well audible) remind that California is a high-risk area, and surely earth shall tremble again! Bye! ;)
We're currently playing this piece in my highschool band.
It's so peaceful yet beautiful.
five years since i first listened to this symphony and it still gives me chills
