Speaking as someone that spent their summers in rural California- it REALLY depends on the area your in. Outside Templeton and Paso Robles the community is very welcoming to everyone. Hell we helped with planting when a Mexican family did buy a nearby ranch and after a about 3 years they were attending the landowner association meeting and had joined the barter ring where you gave part of your harvest to the group of guys that had a Harvester and bailer. When they switched over to growing grapes a couple years ago they would trade bottles of wine for fruit from a local orchard or grain for their horses.

In the first story, I'm thinking this was a what we'd call a pond, or perhaps a reflecting pool. Filling a swimming pool with concrete would take ages and the cost would be astronomical. Plus, having safety fencing around a swimming pool is standard just about everywhere, and the story implies there is none.

So true. At least here in the US, in MOST states, if the HOA forms in an existing neighborhood, they can't force you to join. I eindered abt this and was writing a story where one of my characters moved into an older neighborhood, and decided to.look.up various laws abt them in this country. Plus, I've seen reports recently where some states are tightening laws on what HOAs can do, although with all the stories that crop.up abt them both in the news and on Reddit, IMO they should be made illegal.

The pools would had to be emptied before concrete could be put in it. If anyone tried that with my pool they'd have to break through the locks on my gates. That was a very strange HOA. In our Florida HOA changes can't be made arbitrarily. 75% of homeowners have to vote for any changes in regulations. We have a sane Board of Directors. I'm glad Karen was sued and lost. She was mad with power. She'll have years in prison to see the folly of her actions.

Story 1, this Karen should have been forced to repair OP's pool, watch as everything she did was undone, pay her fines and have all of her property sold off in front of her before she's buried alive under a mountain of trash instead of being sent to prison. As punishment for appointing Karen, the Mayor should be exposed, removed from public office permanently and forced to both dig the grave for Karen in the trash as well as fill it in over the top of her. Hopefully the wife of the Mayor divorced him and took everything in the settlement for his cheating on her.

According to them and other neighbors, dude was sky clad in the street, yelling, and waving a gun around. Still don't know how he wasn't hauled off in cuffs. Once yelled at my BF as he was mowing the back, something about him stalking crazy guy. Hadn't mowed his lawn for over a month and had packages piling up at his door. Sounds more like the cat adopted them as it's humans. Abandoned/neglected/stray cats will look for better humans who actually care for them and are nice to them.
Pretty hard to steal a cat in the first place, unless you're trapping it indoors (which would be cruel to do to an outdoor cat like this, who would do better as indoor/outdoor with a pet door) and if they want to go back, they've been known to travel incredible distances, up to hundreds of miles. If the cat stays, it has chosen a new home with these humans.

oh and cat naping part, op did all they could to find the owners. asked the rest of the neighbors, put up flyers in the area to see if someone was missing a pet, had it checked for microchips etc. no one come fort claiming the cat and if someone did own it in the neighborhood it was higely neglected

how many times do I have to say it: criminals need to keep a low profile in order not to get discovered. if you're already doing tax fraud becoming a tyrant is the worst thing you can do!
I mean what was she thinking when she was filling up the pool of concrete? that the owner would not come and Sue her for the damages?
personally if I had my way I would have her personally dig out the concrete with her own bare hands with a pickaxe!! along with the punishment she got from the government.
it's people like this that need to learn that they are not invincible. and if you keep thinking that you're invincible one moment the world is going to come and collapse on you and you will have nothing left!
I also hope that the op got the pool were paired. because it's such a shame to leave a pool in such a condition.
also devaluing the neighborhood only happens when you're a tyrant hoa! because nobody wants to live where the rules are so strict they basically have no freedom does the valuing the neighborhood because nobody wants to live in it! not just because one individual person has a pool?
also what was the big idea by having to reapply for permits that happened long ago. If anything I would have just taken her to court over that.
but at least when it comes to greedy Karen's they always end up being their own demise.

    • @Charles-7

the devalue part is what I agree on, it's like living a prison more then a nice friendly neighborhood, which yeah i heard stories of HOAs imprisoning owners in their own home, all cause they chose not pay the ridiculous fines they mailed him, and also others where they think a wheelchair ramp is devaluing the place, never realizing that a ramp is safer then stairs, and they made some stupid bylaw excuse of they they need to demolish the ramp, so yeah some of these HOAs care more about being strict and making easy out if the owners, rather then to figuring how to make the neighborhood more safer, and also they never seem to care that their insane actions are indeed devaluing the very neighborhood they sore to protect and such.

Lawn Mowing Story: OP and her Husband need to install Cameras to watch their yard/doors and at least a post & Wire fence to mark the boundary between their Property and the Drunk Neighbour's Property so he never again accidentally mows part of their yard or in any way steps foot in their yard...Also a Certified, Signature Required Letter needs to be sent informing both Drunks that they are no longer welcome on OP's Property again and if they EVER step foot on it the Police will be called and they will be Charged with Trespassing...and likely Being Drunk In Public as well considering how early she at least starts drinking and how fast she puts it away...

Have I ever had "interesting" neighbors? I suppose so. One comes to mind.
A few years back, I lived in a neighborhood just outside the town's city limits and was also just outside an Army base. We lived on a cul-de-sac around then and were the only house on the road at the time. Eventually a house was built across the road from ours and soon after a family moved into it. A man and a woman from what I can tell around my parents' age, if not a little younger, and their two teenage sons.
The mother was meek that she barely spoke and was rarely seen, so I don't remember much of her. The father was this overweight asshole of a man that liked to act like since we were outside the city limits, he could do whatever he wanted. And his sons apparently learned that behavior, because they acted the same way. Making noise all hours of the night, drinking, partying, riding ATVs around on property they didn't own. Eventually while I was having a friend of mine from a neighboring town live with me and my parents for a time, one of the teenage sons and my friend got into a heated argument right in the middle of the road. I don't recall what it was about, but it really irritated my mother, who while short, was retired from the Army. She actually almost intervened while holding a pistol behind her back, ready if they tried anything. Thankfully the jackass teenager had the sense to back down when my friend and I restrained my mother because of said pistol she was holding.
They kept to themselves from what we could tell after that and eventually didn't see the sons after a few weeks. Learned about a month afterwards that the sons, both of them, were banned from the county. Not the town, the entire county, which meant the town, the Army base, and all the towns around that base.
As extreme as my mother's reaction was, you'd have to do something incredibly stupid and extreme to be banned from an entire county. And for those of you outside of the US, a county is similar to a District in the UK. It's a region that typically is an area of land that several towns, cities, etc. might reside within.

As a non US citizen, (grewn up in Europe) after some of these videos.
Am I right to think that HOAs are like local neigbourhood mafia that pretends to be something official to cash out on citizens and terrorizes the local neigbourhood?
Im asking because there isnt such a thing in Europe.
Here in Austria Local neigbourhoods are beautiful most of the time. There is no such entity to watch local neigbourhoods instead there are strict laws for what you can do and cannot do on your plot.
Especially when there is a need for environmental protection.

I’ll be honest, anytime I hear somebody start a story on Reddit by insulting an area for being rural, I just assume they’re making shit up and/or left out the part where they antagonized the people messing with them.
Not always true, but _waaaay_ too many stories I’ve read on Reddit over the last 12 years following this trajectory have been been boiler plate “These rural subhumans hate me for being objectively better than them!”.
Like here’s a possible plothole: the OP states they moved into the area to watch after her ailing MIL, then moved when she passed. Considering it’s a house, I’d assume that means they moved in with the MIL, which means that she lived next door to these people prior to her son and daughter-in-law moving in. They’d likely know she was a doctor, so not illegal, and would have already known her by the last name Lovato as it’s the husband’s mother, so that point about the mail makes no sense. The whole thing seems extremely fishy to me.

I had some wicked bad neighbors about a year ago, the building I live in is one building but divided into separate apartments so each one had a front door and oddly enough there was a brick porch only for the middle two apartments 3 & 4. The doors for 3 & 4 face each other more inner of the brick porch that’s carpeted (idk why it is this place has a lot of wrong things with it) now I lived in 3 and I love to garden but secnce there was no room for a proper garden bed we did plant pots and I had them Lined up in front of the brick and on top of it on the edge so it didn’t take up space (bigger plants on the ground smaller on the brick) now I had these here long before these bad neighbors moved in and even the building owner liked them. When these people moved in there was an air about them that wasn’t quite right, the first problem that came up was my plants . One morning I went out to water them all the plants that was on 4’s side got moved over to 3’s side now I was confused and asked my mom about it which she got up and came out in a sort of anger manner (probably because our property was moved) confused my mom told me to just put them back and so I did and the next day rolled around and they got moved back now this time a note on the door ‘one of our kids has a bee allergy and we would love if you kept your plants off our side’ now I showed this to my mom who wasn’t pleased to here this. I wasn’t too sure why but we would of moved them away if they asked before hand but my mom told me to put them back. (For context the only plants I had that produced flowers was my mothers hibiskis tree and my pepper plant that was both on our side) so from there we would have a plant battle of where they went oh and the building owner said if they didn’t block they way to the doors it was fine. While that was happening their daughter around 5 maybe scribbled on my step fathers cooler with sharpie now this wouldn’t be much of a problem if it wasn’t made out of wood and it wasn’t even on the brick porch it was under a pitched up tent on our side infront of my mom’s friends apparent (number 2) nothing really came out of that. Next stop on this small list is their cat, they had a cat called sushi. Sushi was left outside all the time because they said ‘she keeps scratching at the door so much so if she wants out we let her’ now idk what it was like in there but if a cat wanted out and made no attempt to go back in side it was probably a bad family. After that they kind of layed low until fighting was herd from 4 (the building has thin walls) and cops where called now I don’t exactly remember what happened but i do remember how the wife and the wife’s friends were getting in the cops face as they talked soon the cops talked with the husband and he was a lot more calm my stepdad was talked to as well sence he called and was left with the keys of 4 for the time being as the wife and husband had to go to the station for something. After that they stayed quiet but the suddenly they left. Turns out they weren’t paying rent and kept saying they’ll have it next time but never did once the end of the month approached they left and left sushi as well. We never saw them aging and the the neighbor (next building one) took in sushi and that was the tail of my bad neighbors
