The Most Underrated Flying Weapon of the Korean War

- 1952. The Korean War rages. Although the US Air Force has established air dominance, the Mig Valley, close to the Yalu River, remains under Chinese control thanks to the introduction of the utterly effective Soviet MIG-15 jet aircraft.
Still, a lone American aircraft ventures deep into enemy airspace plagued with these devastating Soviet fighters with one objective: gathering intelligence.
Marine pilot, Master Sergeant Lowell T. Truex flies a blue F2H Banshee, a reliable high-altitude fighter and successor to the Navy’s first pure jet, the Phantom.
Named after the mythological banshees due to the unique scream of its engines, Truex’s F2H was on a photo run of enemy installations when he felt something was off.
He was alone. Truex began to look around for his escort of Air Force F-86 Sabres, but they were nowhere to be seen.
Truex took a quick look at the Yalu River below and noticed a group of enemies of MIG-15s was taking off.
The sergeant felt uneasy. His four 20-millimeter cannons could help him stand a chance against the enemies, except this time, his aircraft was naked.
Instead of guns and bombs, Truex’s Banjo, as it was known to the Marines, was equipped with six state-of-the-art cameras that had no use against the superior enemy fighters. But he had a mission to finish…

God Bless the flying sergeants !
Semper Fi !
Can the noise [music].
Yes, totally out of pocket, the music choice was. 60s/70s guitar riffs for early 50s period piece.
Oh look! 2 more yahoos with nothing else to do but whine about the music choice. Tell ya what. When you start your own channel, you can choose the music.
Yes indeed, the >NOISE> is ruinous to an otherwise good presentation.
Music is fine, quality music output is key.
I liked the music. I thought the rhythm and pace fit the story being told even if it was a style from a later era.
Should be "bingoed", not "binged". The term "bingo" means the aircraft has only enough fuel to return home.
It's AI voice....Soon everything will be computer generated
@@billm4138
It's not, actually.
A Dinged ate my baby!
Its not AI 😂 @billm4138
just a guy with a accent..
@@forresttm AI , an accented individual.
I'm gonna be that guy.. A2D Skyraider? A1 Skyraider or A2 Skyshark? I know someone was going to pick up on it lol
My USMC buddy's Dad, was also in Korea, was a Ssgt. commissioned to Lt. and flew a F-4U, corsair, that also was ONLY armed with cameras. They didn't let the enlisted pilots have/use guns. He ended up getting in a fight with some Capt. and was busted back down,, then they sent him back stateside.... and before getting out, made him one of those poor "gunnie pigs" , given orders to go to Mercury, NV, and be a test subject to be placed near one of the Atomic Bomb tests. In the '80's his back was deteriorating and caught cancer and died from it.
As a dramatic and documentary editor of nearly 30 years, I’m all for invention. But the Delta blues slide guitar is a little bizarre for Korean war bombing footage.
Just picked up on it as I read ur comment
meh
There was a photo Banshee at Pocahontas Park in Vero Beach, Florida in the 1960s and 70s that we played on as kids. Luckily, it was rescued and now is in the Naval Air Museum at Pensacola NAS.
Quality video...loved every second. Very immersive.
F2H Corsairs? Really guy, get a proofreader.
Marine master Sergeant flying a jet?
Way back when, certain enlisted personnel were authorized to do much more. That changed the day someone initiated an RF SNAFU.
Yes, lots of enlisted men flew in various airforce.
Including Chuck Yeager. The Flying Sergeants program came out of WWII. Now only college graduates.
@@timpeterson2738
RAF Battle of Britain .. NCO.. Flight Sargents....
The commentator talks to fast for my old ears. Music makes it worse. Korea vet
0:07 Ummm. NOT "Mig Valley".... It's "Mig ALLEY".
He said mig Ally. Did the wax out.
@@user-og1ux8nr3i He said "Valley" in the first reference at 0:07. Later he said "Alley". Maybe YOU need to DIG the wax out.
Let me get this straight. A US Marine Corps aircraft is being piloted by a Sergeant?
YES! Navy and Marine Corps enlisted aviators were called Naval Aviation Pilots (NAPs). The Marines had 131 NAPs in 1952, and not just in transport squadrons. NAPs flew helicopters and jets, seeing heavy action in Korea. And Truex was one of them.
11:56 Sorry Banshee, you have to step aside and let the advanced F3H Demon take over..
Navy & Marine aircraft are usually underrated. People don't understand the toughness they possess. Not to mention numerous surviving Japanese pilots, the only ones to have combat engagements with all our fighters during WWII, say they'd fight a Mustang or a P-38 10 times out of 10 if it was that or a F4U Corsair. Great video G 🤙🔥
The reserve unit and active duty squadrons I served with both flew the Banshee. I was an AT2 when I mustered out in 1957.🙂🙂
Enjoyed this. Thank you. I like Cold War jets. 👍🏻
Gemini and Apollo astronaut Jim Lovell flew an F2H Banshee before joining NASA.
Not the most formidable aircraft, but definitely one of the best looking of the era. Although not as advantageous, those straight winged jets had a certain elegance to them.
We could do without the music.
Love the history but I didn't think music was too loud but I'm death
NCOs were invested in the Korean conflict with flight training?
Today I Learned, perhaps
News to me. 😮
Yrah, right
Probably a cia scumbag trying to instigate a conflict
Way back in the way back, certain limited enlisted personnel were authorized to do much more. This ended after an RF SNAFU.
The electric guitar riff seems kinda weird to me.
It could work briefly with specific imagery of certain aircraft...but not as a persistent backdrop.
Kinda dig it
I enjoy your videos. But your background music is way too loud!
I find it fine....however I listen to it on quality speaker and amp. so it sounds great.
when you save unnecessary costs in military
Have you ever served in any nation's military, or do you just like running your mouth? Judging by your channel, I'd say it's the latter.
Banshee my beloved
It's a slow dark skies episode
Cool plane
I thought that when they made the decision that you had to be an officer to fly that all the “flying Sargents “ were converted to Warrant Officers
Where's the notice?
sometimes it's good and sometimes.....................this time good.
How good was that sound track?...........
American military pilots are normally officers.
Looks like they would make good trainer aircraft for novice jet pilots before they start flying the active combat jets. I hope someone thought of that before they were all scrapped.
Skyraider was called AD before 1962. A2D was a cancelled aircraft.
Boy your music is too loud. makes it hard to listen to you.
Disagree with quality audio output it's fine. Enjoyed it.
@@frogbones1976 that's fine too! It's just how i experienced it
@@frogbones1976 you respond to every comment saying they don't like the music. It's really weird.
Yeah, right, it’s a "post ’nam" music. Please choose some music from the fifties ...
Why did it take so long for the US to realize that swept wings were the way to go, after seeing the ME262?
The USAF quickly went for it with the Sabre. The USN aircraft had to land slowly on carriers, and lowspeed handling of the first gen swept back aircraft was dreadfull. So they stayed with straightwing fighters first.
That answers a question I have had, too. Thx!
I really like the video but I have to agree the music is distracting
Please cut out the music, it's really off putting
Disagree, its fun. Maybe get quality audio? Clear voice over music on my equipment.
❤❤❤❤
Master sergeant flying a marine corps plane??????

@@Rotorhead1651 youre pointing at ur own name lmao..theres a bunch of similar comments, just giving feed back to make future vids better
I find it cool, possible I have quality speaker and sound hardware that makes it more enjoyable for me.
@@frogbones1976 for me it over powered his voice
@@frogbones1976Quality hardware means nothing if it's not to someone's taste nor in line with other videos. The music takes away from the video. Saying that as someone with a sound system.
Hahaha. Seems that Air Force guys used that recon plane as a bait.
Started well but wandered off into a history lesson.
You need to do your homework. There were no "Chinese divisions" in Seoul in June of 1950.
Pay attention. He said Chinese equipped.
Kill the damn background music, out at the 3:26 mark😡
A NCO as a pilot? In the US military you need a commission to pilot a plane
Not back then
not way back when.
cmon what's with music.. play low volume classical or something .. who's doing this??
I lost interest because the music competed with the narration. Focus on what you’re good at-story telling-and eliminate distractions!
somebody's listening. .i could barely hear the background music. .what i could hear was much better than the loud metalhead shrieking a lot of the "macho man" posters use.
Bloody music is so distracting
PLEASE STOP WITH THE RED ARROWS
My Dad flew all the Marine Corps fighter planes in three wars and as far as I know Sgts. were not eligible to fly fighter planes. One had to be an officer to fly in the Korean war days. Also, some of this video shows the wrong aircraft at places. The F8-F Panther is called a "Banshee" at one point. If you weretyrying to make a legitimate video at least get the aircraft names right!
Actually, during the Korean War the IS military experimented with letting Senior NCO’s flying.
This was put together by AI, everyone cheats now days...
Music selection sucks
No, your taste in music sucks, as (I suspect) you do, scrotum breath. When you're driving, you can choose the music. In the meantime, don't touch the radio.
You're not selling trucks or ATV's so turn the high-school music down please...thank you. Carry on...
not at all the first music complaint on these more recent videos ... obviously no one is reading the comments
Mig15 and 17 were much better
I just HATE the STUPID background music. WHY for Gods sake ?

It’s distracting and annoying.
I like music but not as a distraction to narration.
