I had eggs but one of them was rotten and exploded on the first night of incubation , I have cleaned out just the part of the incubator that had the dirty gooey stuff . do you know if this is going to affect the other eggs
Good video; short and packed with information :) One question; Do you have any thoughts of how important a STABLE temperature is during storage? (as long as it doesn't go below 55 or above 75 that is)
I'm only using my heater when needed (mainly during the mornings) so the temperature fluctuates with 10-12 degrees F, but stays within the 55-75 range.
This would be the case in nature as well so I assume it's not a major issue, but I'm wondering whether stabilizing the temperature would improve the hatch rate or if it doesn't matter.

Just wanted to say thank you a lot for your tips! I recently had 22 hatches out of 38 incubated eggs. Maybe this isn't the best rate, but it's way better than my previous rates, thanks to your videos.

My goose started laying this past week. It's very early in the season and we have lots of snow still, so we decided to start collecting and bought an incubator.
Some of the days were 35-40 degrees and never below freezing. Can we use these eggs or was it too cold for them to be good?

Good Video! I used to set my eggs into the egg turner as they were laid and plug in the egg turner and NOT the heat part of the incubator, just leave the incubator in a cool area with the lid completely off. I would collect them until they incubator was full or the 5-7 days passed then when I was ready to incubate I would just add water to the bottom and plug in the heat and put the top on so the temp would come up!...I may just be lazy but that way I didn't have to worry about them while they were waiting to be incubated
I think that using the egg turner while waiting to incubate is a great idea. I like to plug my incubator in a few days before I start incubating to let it get to temp and level lout though so i would just set it outside of the incubator myself.

Hi my dear!! Excellent video!! I am collecting guinea eggs for a neighbor and firstly wanted to thank you for the PERFECT demo for turning eggs!!! I didn’t know that❤️. Secondly, if the eggs are protected by the bloom, what is the Lysol spray doing? I thought the bloom kept the bacteria out, (and these guinea eggshells are thick!).
I always wipe them off before I put them in the egg carton but hadn’t heard of the spray for bacteria.

Thank you for the kind comments. The Lysol spray is an extra step to help kill any bacteria that may be on the shell. The bloom does help protect but every little bit extra helps that much more. It has worked well for me anyway.
Is it okay to spray the incubator with Listerine like what you did for the eggs? Is there anything I should worry about if I do that?
It is perfectly fine to do that. I spray mine down with it before I start it up.
If you have eggs that are 7 days old and eggs that are 1 day old (or from the same day they go into the incubator), will they all still hatch at the same time, or within a day of each other?

I store my on my garage floor in the back corner away from the door and any direct sunlight. The floor stays about mid 60's through most of the summer.
When you say that it improves your hatch rate, what sort of difference have you noticed before and after you started sanitizing them?
Also, do you spray them as you collect them or do you wait until you have all of the eggs you want to incubate and then spray them?
It is hard to say for sure. I pretty typically get 80 to 90% hatch rates now though. I used to get closer to 60%. I spray them when I collect them and then once more before they go into the incubator.
What if there is a lot of faeces on all the eggs that I received in the mail and I only had a small batch of 24 what should I do should I just I don't have Listerine so should I just wipe them off with water but not hard just with water at the or the spray water on them I am not sure please tell me
Hi, i have a question, i have quail in my backyard i have an average 5 eggs everyday and i have a incubator that fits 20 quail eggs so it took me 4 days to have all 20 eggs i know that i have to wait 7 days before incubation but i dont if 7 days starts 4 days ago when i got my first eggs or 4th day when i have all 20 eggs, thank you so much
I am not sure if I understand completely. First of all, you don't have to wait 7 days to start incubating. You can start as soon as you have enough eggs to incubate. I think what you are asking though is if 7 days starts from the day you collect your first egg. The answer to that is yes. I hope that clears it all up.
Hi Would/do you use that spray to clean the incubator before setting eggs ?
I always scrub it out real good first but yes, I use it to sanitize the incubator as well.
Been watching for a long time, I have hatched out two small groups and not all lived.. Have tried 4 or 5 times sence but no luck. Trying to raise and release. Where do you get the adjustable thermostat to adjust my temp with. Thanks for the info..Frank Brookhouse Carterville Illinois
If you are asking about the incubator thermostat, I use a little giant incubator. it came with the adjustable thermostat. So sorry to hear about your issues. I hope you get them resolved quickly.

I just put all my breeders in one pen. Multiple hens and roosters.

I am about to put my first batch in the incubator. Unfortunately of my 10 quail only 3 females and only 1 laying, so my first batch will only be 7 eggs. Trying to increase my female to male ratio. I have in my breeder cage 1:3 male:female. I just bought the listerine and spray bottle. Hoping for the best. I have a non forced air incubator, with an automatic egg turner. What temperature should I set it for to hatch out quail eggs.
For a forced air incubator you want to shoot for 101. In a still air incubator, It is really best to rotate the eggs around the incubator as well as turn them but that might be a lot of work with an egg turner in there. It sounds like your ratio is fine. Just make sure they have lots of light (at least 14 hours a day) and they will start laying more regularly.

Maybe having the eggs exposed to the bacteria is good for the chicks that live, might make them more resilient?
If you consider the "mess" that some chicks are hatched in by hens plus as you mentioned the coating, you have to wonder?
@@raincoast9010 I'm thinking that with the incubator having heat and humidity, the bacteria will thrive but you have a good point. That being said, I rinse my eggs in lukewarm water and have no problems.
Hi Chris, Maybe you can help me. I am hatching guinea eggs and adjusted my method this year after seeing your series. Last year I did not sterilize my eggs first and put them in my incubator as I collected them and did not turn off the egg turning ... I had an almost 100% hatch rate. This year doing as your instructions ... I am not getting a good hatch rate. I had 2 hatch, 3 pipped and died and 4 more fully developed but not hatch. Suggestions ? Maybe go back to what worked last year ? Thanks, Carl
I am so sorry to hear that. I am not sure why you wouldn't be a getting a good hatch rate but if you were at 100% before I would go back to doing that.
Hello I'm planning to hatch turkey eggs for the first time. I noted that you said to not incubate eggs with feces on them. Most of the turkey eggs are dirty because they are outdoors/pastured and it's been muddy/raining. I know you said not to wash them. What would be better or worse... to wash and disinfect them or to just disinfect? I won't be able to get cleaner eggs. It's just not possible with our current set up.
Secret Identity hi, I have had this problem, and they actually all hatched! I get a small spray bottle with water and spray in the entire egg usually uses 3 pumps, then you grab a tissue/paper towel and dab and gently wipe, but don’t press to hard or it will take the protective layer of, also don’t try to dry them, if they are wet let them dry themselves! Hope this helped :)
I don't wash or spray with anything. I just wipe off and put in the incubator.
Well, I wipe them off most of the time. I bought hatching eggs and they had poop. They hatched so now I don't worry about it too much.
A peroxide wash apparently may be a better option and increases hatch rates by adding oxygen to the egg. I have yet to try it but those that have claim a near 100% hatch rate. Wish I could remember the youtube channel I saw it on.
That is a pretty common way to do it. I don't know if it is any better but it isn't any worse that is for sure.

You can store them for up to 10 days. I usually don't like to go over 7 myself though.
So glad I found this video! I ordered hatching duck eggs through the mail and they showed up not very well packaged. I bought a dozen, they sent 14 and 6 were broken. Some of the undamaged eggs got a little slimy from their broken neighbors, should I wipe them down or just spray them with the Listerine? I don't want to remove the bloom, just the funk. I'm so mad about the broken ones! Some broke early in shipping (dried and stuck to everything) and some broke closer to my end. Thanks! Subscribing now...
I am so sorry for the slow response. You have probably already figured it out. If it were me, I would soak them in water for a few minutes to loosen up the stuck on gunk and then gently wipe it off with a paper towel. it isn't ideal of course but it is better than leaving it on there.
No problem at all, I ended up spraying them several times with the Listerine and gave them a gentle wipe with a micro fiber cloth. We'll see... very disappointed in the seller, these eggs were VERY poorly packed. Thanks for being such a positive influence in agriculture.
Hi I have a quotation, i colect 6 to 9 quail eggs a day and store them for 7 days. Now when I put them in the incuobeter, shall i but them all in the same time? Or but them by day they were collected?

Hey can someone tell me how many day do I wait to put water in my incubator??? I just got a new one its a pro series digital incubator farm innovators...I cant see in there so that's why Im asking
That depends on your conditions really. Just add water if the humidity drops too low. For the first 15 days (for quail) you need to keep it between 55 to 70%. At lockdown you need to bump it up a little and try to keep it at 75 to 80%. I hope that helps.

Just built it. I didn't film because it is a prototype and I want to make sure it works well and what changes I might make. If it works out well I will be rebuilding out of better material and film the building. I will probably shoot a video this weekend though to show what I have accomplished so far and discuss the plan. 3 days ago our first hatch was over. My son started out with 4 dozen. After candeling a week in the incubator, had to toss a dozen that weren't fertile. After the chicks started hatching we ended up with 23 healthy chicks. A few that died looked as if they were full grown, but never made it out of the shell. They never tried to break threw. What would of killed them?, as in my mistakes. A second question is I had some born with their insides on the outside of their body. What caused that. They were living but I put them down knowing they'd die. Lastly 2 started growing into chicks but stopped. Can you tell me what I did wrong in the 3 scenarios I wrote. Thanks for any help.
I am sorry to hear that you are having problems. It sounds like temperature issues to me. If you haven't already, get a few non digital thermometers, make sure they are accurate (calibrate them first) and put them in your incubator to verify if it is reading the temp correctly. Adjust it to be 100 degrees F. If it is reading 100 but is actually only 97 or 98 that can lead to the issues you described. I hope that helps.

you can leave them up to 7 days. After that the hatch rate starts to drop. I hope that helps.
Yeah. I was thinking about it yesterday. Correct me if I’m wrong, but we are waiting a few days (between 1-7) days to let the egg develop enough to determine if they are fertile. But during those 1-7 days, we don’t want the eggs to spoil? So we keep them cool, but not too cool, so that the eggs are still good to incubate or eat?

yes for sure. The listernine isn't necessary I just find that it helps improve the hatch rate.

Just one time when they go into the egg carton and then once more before going into the incubator.

Just ran across your channel and subscribed. :) I too raise quail, never heard of spraying them with Listerine solution, but I am sure it would be helpful... have you noticed if it improves your hatch rate at all, with the extra germs being removed? Some folks get 80+ % hatch rate but I've never gotten over about 60, which is fine, I'm ALWAYS ok with whatever I get.

I have not done scientific studies on it but It seems to work with my eggs. I saw an immediate increase in hatch rate when I started using it. I typically get about 80% hatch rate. Hi , can you use another type of listerine; I have the blue listerine is that ok?
I am not sure what is in the blue Listerine so I don't know. It would probably be fine but just not sure. You can use hydrogen peroxide in place of the Listerine though.

Any other antibacterial spray can use? Just 1time spraying before incubating. How can improve eggs fertility and how long we save eggs after hen egg laying. Some chicks not crack the egg shell after 21 days and died in eggs, what I do for this satiation?
You can use just plain rubbing alcohol mixed with water. As far as your incubation problem. It sounds like it may be related to temperature. If you haven't already, I would get 2 non digital thermometers, calibrate them to ensure they are accurate, and put them in the incubator to verify that it is reading the temperature accurately.

Great video series! Question: I just followed your method, and it only yielded a 20% hatch rate.. I have a young flock of Buff Orpingtons (8 months old), that are laying well, but their egg shells are really thick and hard to break. Of the 80% that didn't hatch, most contained a fully formed chick that just couldn't pip or break the shell. Have you ever noticed that young hens lay really tough membrane/thick shelled eggs, and if so, is there something else I could try to improve hatch rate? I noticed that my old flock of 4-5 year old hens had much thinner shells, and I was getting a 40% hatch rate. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks!!
Sounds like it may be a case of too much calcium. If you are giving them oyster shell and mixing it with their feed try giving it separately. The other thing might be the temperature on your incubator. If it is a degree or two low it can cause the chicks to develop more slowly and then not be able to actually hatch. You might try throwing a few calibrated thermometers in there to check that it is reading correctly. Make sure to have two and that you calibrate them first though.
SR. Thanks for your thoughts. I don't supplement calcium or add oyster shell, so I'll double check my temperatures and calibration.
What do you do with the eggs that do not hatch after 20 or so days? Compost??

Yes I did not need to add much water very little wit high humidity. I used to separate Temps to check the heat n yep the temp was off so I lowered the temp until my gauges in the inside was good close to 100. I then added a fan in my room n my humidity is all good bout 65. I llwait a day n check it again

To anyone who is wondering if they can use other types of Listerine, you can. For the ingredients used in Listerine all active ingredients are identical. For the inactive ingredients they are different. They won't kill the embryo at all though. On another note, someone in the comments used a 50/50 solution of hydrogen proxide and water and found it did NOT kill the embryo.
I am sure you are correct but i am a little hesitant to say to do it without testing it out myself first. Good advice though.

If it was just that temperature for a day and is now fine I wouldn't worry about it. As long as the temp going forward is fine, you should be ok.

No. I still spray them down with water/Listerine, but you shouldn't be "cleaning" them really.
what do you recommend selling a dozen quail eggs at? Jumbo cot. and reg. cot?
Whatever the market will bare. I know that is a vague answer but see what they go for in your area. Around here they go for about $3 to $5 a dozen for eating eggs and about $5 for hatching eggs. But that varies a lot depending on how many people are selling them and what they are selling them for at the time.

As long as you are not scrubbing them it won't affect the bloom. Good thinking though.

No use origanal. I've done research.
I wouldn't use any other kind of mouthwash. You can use diluted rubbing alcohol or even diluted hydrogen peroxide.

it is ok to do so. Just don't scrub them and wipe them as little as possible. It is best to use a dry paper towel honestly.
Can I use spirit to spray the eggs?
I am not familiar with that so I can't say for sure. You can use regular rubbing alcohol mixed 50% with water though.
And what is the best temperature in the incubator
100 F for a still air incubator or 99.5 F for a forced air (with a fan built in) incubator.

I only use original Listerine. I am not sure if the others would be fine to use or not because I don't know exactly what is in them. You can also use just regular rubbing alcohol the same way.

I don't have listerine but I do have hydrogen peroxide and white vinegar.....do you think either one of those would work?
I don't really think I would try that myself. Especially not vinegar as it will dissolve the shells. You can probably use a diluted alcohol mixture. Maybe half water half 70% isopropyl alcohol Just a lite misting. I hope that helps.

I would use original only. The mint has other additives that may or may not affect the eggs. Sorry I can't answer in detail.

Wow, that would be an exhaustive list. I think you are better staying away from all chemicals unless they are proven safe.

It best not to put them in the incubator because of the risk of bacteria infecting the other eggs but at this point, there isn't much you can do. There is still a chance they will hatch for sure.

During incubation quail eggs should be placed to the point way or in the round way
You can either lay them on their side or if using an egg turner keep the pointy end down. I hope that helps.
Can I use listerine zero? Can not fine original at my area
I am not sure. I really don't know how the chemicals in that would affect them. You could try it. or you could skip that step and it will probably be fine. On another note, alcohol could be used. Dilute vodka or grain alcohol and it should work just as well. I hope that helps.
HII HIENG HUI did Listerine 0 work?
I had a zero hatch rate on my first batch of eggs, however only 1 was fertile and the automatic egg turner came unplugged so not really a problem. I just set my second batch of 18 eggs, stored and sprayed as you suggested. The humidity is staying 60-65% even without water so hummmm. I noticed that with my new forced air incubator that I do not seem to be able to get the humidity above 70 % for the hatch days, even with full trays of water, any suggestions?
I have heard some other people having the same issue. I wonder if it is a problem with the humidity gauge reading correctly. If the windows are fogging up it should be well over 70% humidity. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it too much as long as there is water in the trays. The only suggestion I have to get higher humidity is to either put something like a sponge soaked in water in the incubator. You have to make sure it doesn't touch any of the eggs but it should help get the humidity up. Or you could add a humidifier to the room that the incubator is in to bring up the humidity in that room and that should help too.
I also had people ask me about the same thing. I live in Arkansas and we tend to have a good amount of humidity outdoors but in our house there is not as much. I have been incubating my own eggs for awhile. When I started I had a similar problem with that and keeping my temp regulated. The sponge was to much in my little incubator so I placed a small rag in my bowl and put water in the bowl. I left the out side of the rag hanging out from the bowl, the rag was completely wet. It gives me enough humidity so have a very successful hatch rate. That is my go to thing for lockdown. Good luck and we wish you the best

My humidity is 80. - 89 from day one. How do I bring it down until its lock down time
It should level out in a few days. Basically that just means you have a high humidity in your air so you probably don't need to add as much or maybe no water at all until lockdown. Humidity is directly related to surface are (not volume of water) so if you need to decrease humidity start by adding water to only half the channels. Fill them all the way up but don't put any water in the other channels. And just keep working with it by adding or removing channels until you find the sweet spot. Don't stress about it too much. I personally believe that, prior to lockdown, humidity isn't that big of a deal but I can't prove it. I hope that helps a little.
What if there is a lot of faeces on all the eggs that I received in the mail and I only had a small batch of 24 what should I do should I just I don't have Listerine so should I just wipe them off with water but not hard just with water at the or the spray water on them I am not
just brush it off the best you can. If it doesn't brush off easily you can spray the spot with a little water and gently wipe it off.
Slightly Rednecked work with the kids brand mouthwash or like Colgate I will also do all the other steps you mentioned but when you receive the eggs in the mail do I just let them sit out just regular room while the house is around 70° also I greatly appreciate your efforts to reply to the comments
Slightly Rednecked and when you are doing the float test do you spray it with the solution before you do the float test will you only spray it with the solution after you do it with the flow test
yeah, let them sit for 24 hours to settle and even the temp out. Room temp is fine. If you don't have listerine I would skip the spraying step and just put them in the incubator.

Tbh… the best hatch rate I ever got & still get is from wash & has been refrigerated., when I take them out to put in the incubator. I turn my turner on & let them set for 24 hours & I always got a great hatch. That’s what I have learned over the few yrs I been hatching my eggs out. I learn everything on my own. Something I decided to take upon my self to find out. U don’t have to tilt them in the refrigerator either. The yolk isn’t gonna stick to one side. U could put them in a bucket & stick in the refrigerator & the yolk won’t stick. The coolness from the refrigerator keeps the yolk from sticking. We all buy eggs to eat from the store. When u go to cook an egg, is that egg stuck to the side? No! Same as hatching eggs no different. U can’t leave them in refrigerator longer than 2wks. U must let them get room temperature before Incubation for 24hours. I also got a double yolk all the way to the hatching process. They done awesome on the 18th lockdown day. I waited for the one twin to peep cuz I was gonna have to finish hatching them out cuz they would of needed help. It never peeped & they both ended up dying🥲 one was black & the other was yellow & fully developed. Just wanted to share my knowledge I learned on my own with you all.

@@Slightlyrednecked that’s right! I know everything works differently for everyone. I was always told… it’s wasn’t possible to do that. I’m hardheaded (the taurus in me) so I try things my way. I do take tips from others. But, when others tell me I CANT I like to prove them wrong lol
