IS SPIRIT REALLY AMERICA’S WORST AIRLINE? Economy vs Big Front Seat Showdown
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 чер 2021
- We headed to the U.S. for our latest comparison flight and flew with Spirit Airlines in its "Big Front Seat" and regular economy service. Stella, a credit cards writer for TPG in New York, got the premium spot upfront, while Nicky slummed it in a random economy seat. We flew from Newark to Myrtle Beach on a Spirit Airlines Airbus A320.

Spirit gets a bad wrap and we joke about them but my sons first flight he was pretty terrified and they were incredibly understanding and helpful. It honestly just seems like the corporate side of the business could learn a lot from their crew members.
EasyJet staff has always been very nice tbh. Air France though: bloody arseholes. And EasyJet is much quicker too.
Google “airlines that have never had a crash “ spirit is amongst the top ten in the us who have never had any fatal accidents since opening , im just saying , I think people just like to give them a bad rep so they like to make jokes about them but they are definitely safer than other airlines people take
I love how Stella befriended her seat mate
😊
what a legend
The dude seemed real nice to
Yup, the dude seemed wholesome I'd be friends with him
Lol. I could never do that. I avoid as much social interaction
The Video is basically ‘Nicky goes the Jean Way’.
Spirit has definitely put a lot of effort into stepping up their service. They have some of the best on time performance and lowest lost bags of all airlines. Spirit crews are always friendly and fun.
@Rob Johnson Actually, Spirit has a very poor on-time record of just 71.2%. They lag behind Hawiian, Delta, Alaska, American, United, and Southwest (i.e., everybody). They do perform fairly well on lost baggage, but I think that is largely due to the fact that few Spirit passengers have connecting flights, and that is where most bags are misdirected.
I almost flew them from las vegas to burbank in the big front seat. I should have flown them over AA economy to lax
We've missed doing these seat comparisons so much! Which airline do you want to see us fly with next?
Qantas would be a nice airline to try.
Eva Air?
Ryanair
Air France
Delta
Famous Last Words: “It can’t be worse than Ryanair. Can it?”
They should have a showdown, but include Vueling, EasyJet, Spirit, and a few others.
To be fair, for the price, Ryanair is not that bad
@@mysticoverlord7531 The problem is that Sprit provides Ryanair service for $20 under American Airlines prices.
@@abmindprof Easyjet is fine.
@@mysticoverlord7531 hey don’t be putting disrespect on my name
While I’m sad Jean isn’t here, I’m glad Nicky is in economy. He deserves it after Rosewood.
They're back
Who else can't wait to fly again
For me 3 more days
20 days until my first flight in 16 months!

I love spirit flight attendants, very sweet and chill in my experience.
Been flying Spirit for a few years now and have no issues whatsoever. Would I pay $400 extra just for one free carry-on, seatback entertainment, charging outlet, and snacks? I don't think so. I love the value proposition that I pay for what I want....not what I may or may not use. Excellent safety record, newer planes, and the third-best on-time record in the US. They have definitely gotten a bad wrap. Just don't ever miss your flight and you will be good.
Bob is so wholesome
Always a treat when TPG UK uploads!
I'm glad you guys are doing aviation flying videos again, but I want to see more international flight reviews, please.
Spirit's actual flights are ok, their biggest problem is that if a flight gets delayed or cancelled, they won't give you great alternate options to get to your destination on time.
Nicky saying “Pathetic.”
ICONIC.
Thank you for your impartial honest review, we the crewmembers appreciate it. ✌🙂

I've flown with Spirit from LGA to FLL a couple times. It's really not as bad of an airline as many people say it is. You just need to understand what you pay and don't pay for. They got me to FLL exactly on time this past June (2023). My round trip cost me just north of $200. On other airlines it would've been at least $300. Spirit is also upgrading their fleet big time right now with the A320neo and A321neo. They're getting multiple new aircraft every month, probably five or six every month. More aircraft means more flexibility.
I'm trying the big front seat next month! I was able to nab a direct flight, carry on and do a big front seat $150 cheaper than Delta, my preferred carrier. And I don't have to connect like I did on Delta. So it was a no brainer for me. Thanks for the great review.
Just found this channel today and i am obsessed watching all the videos
I always wait for these videos. Love them 🤩😍
Very entertaining and fun to watch. I flew Spirit and found it to be ok. It got me form point A to point B safely. Thanks for posting this.
I so appreciate you guys reviewing the low cost guys, I regularly fly from BWI to DEN and back and will almost elect to fly Frontier not because they're the cheapest (they and Spirit almost always are) but because they're almost always a non-stop flight. Look, the seats aren't as comfortable but you're in it for half the time and you don't have to connect. Add that all in to the fact that at it's cheapest, I flew ROUNDTRIP from BWI-DEN for $38. All in all great review, thanks for shedding light on how these things really work. 👍👍👍
So happy you guys are back with videos 😁
Well done! I still think you had a bit of luck being on a good flight, but the video definitely opened my eyes to what a Spirit experience could look like. Thank you!
Also a new subscriber here! Keep the content comming!
It's good to have you back and know you are safe. Trains, hotels, planes, whatever... just keep doing what you do.
Great job! The trick with Spirit is just know you are paying to get there. You can pay for the "experience" if you want like you guys pointed out. Truth be told they pay their crews the same (including pilots) , have a spotless safety record and keep their planes very clean.
Man I love your reviews keep them coming!
I like Sprit. Mostly because they have direct flights to most cities and I despise layovers. I buy the big seats and purchase my snacks and drinks from the store. My most recent flights had WiFi for $3 or $4.
Wow, you are absolutely captivating Stella! Thanks for another great video guys
You guys really helped me to fly Spirit Airlines. I was a bit leery but east coast flying it seems fine. Thanks
my days always get better when the points guys upload.

you guys are the best!!! love your videos.
Love Stella. Great screen presence. Xx
I’m not going on a Spirit Airlines Flight for a gourmet meal. But then again, who is?
Spirit and Allegiant are the only US carriers I haven’t yet flown on. After watching Spirit go through massive numbers of daily cancellations this past week, I find myself wondering if I’ll ever be brave enough to give them a try. The issue I see is not the cancellations themselves but what happens to passengers who have to deal with cancellations. It is nice to see that they can do a good job of making a flight pleasant. Flying out of Newark can be trying, to say the least, and it looks like Spirit made it more pleasant than it often is.
A good honest review! I’ve have excellent flights in their big front seats!
Spirit contracted with Disney to help with their customer experience a couple of years ago. Their new planes have a more comfortable seat than the older ones. I will always try to upgrade to the first rows because, even with the upcharge, they are still less expensive than the majors. They do not hide anything regarding their extra charges. Remember, do everything on line and you will not be stuck with the expensive airport charges.
Hey! Great video! Spirit is working on Wifi and should be on every plane very soon. Also, keep in mind, when it comes to inflight entertainment and power/charging stations, if they go out, break, or tech upgrades (think Bluetooth headphones vs plugin headphones), they would constantly have to maintain that. That maintenance would have to be reflected in your ticket price. You have inflight entertainment in your hand and most people keep portable charging devices. lol Great, positive video! you have a subscriber!😉
Very good points! Our personal devices offer great entertainment.
Yes, yes it is. But fun video, also get Stella on more, she was great!
Personally, I've flown Spirit several times. They are just like any other airline honestly. The literal only difference was that the seats were slightly more cramped than the main airlines. But literally everything else is just average. Well, of course the nickel and dime aspect. But hey, that's a budget airline for ya!
I don’t really get why they’re considered “nickel and dime”, like the other airlines also charge for those amenities. They just don’t allow it to be an option.
@@vannareyne6336 very true. It’s just all built in the price of a ticket on other airlines. In some ways, that makes budget airlines better if you think about it. If someone didn’t care about picking a seat or had no bags to check, they wouldn’t have to pay for all that.
Very unbiased sharing👍
Flew Spirit plenty of time since it’s the cheapest option out of my hub. I would say as long as you’re not picky about flying, it shouldn’t be a concern. We bought that personal bag from Walmart and use it since for travel. No problem at all.

@@brightwin2269 OH HIII BAEKHYUN-SSI😂😂
Wow that change the looks of Spirit Airline.
I’m a simple man. I see a Points Guy UK video, I watch it entirely!
My only Spirit experience was so uncomfortable that I swore never to fly with them again.
Still not planning to, but if they are stepping up their game, good for them!
Spirit is pretty good Frontier was scary
The two experiences that you shared were great only because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Typically, the fligjts are at capacity and it's like being in a cattle drive. Their flight attendants are usually really friendly & professional.
I love your videos so much! Do you have any tips to grow a UA-cam channel? By the way, great video! Also these vids makes me want to go on an aeroplane again soon! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think the experience with Spirit, may depend on the departure-arrival destination. My experience with Spirit was bad because of the crew members. Inflight crew members looked pissed, tired, indifferent or who knows what was going on with them. The safety speech wasn't clear, full of mumbling. Upon arrival literally the ground crew asked all of us to move out quickly. I had a deaf couple on my side and I had to explain in my little known sign language what was happening! I completed their survey telling about that experience. I'm glad you guys had a wonderful experience. Maybe u guys reporting it with cameras on hand made that happen, but who knows 🤷🏻♀️
I flew Spirit for the first time several months ago. I was in economy and had a surprisingly large amount of legroom, way more than Frontier.
Love how you can hear babies crying every single time you are talking. true budget airline experience
Ahh yes... opposed to the premium airlines who only provide non crying babies 🙄🙄... seriously... you can't judge a airline by this
@@chrissyg3160 but usually people with kids would go cheaper to save money whereas premium airlines are used by older, wealthier people or business people. That's the point i am trying to make......
@@chrissyg3160 But they missed out on the true Spirit experience -- fistfights.
I don't consider Emirates a "budget" airline, and yet I had to endure a crying child on a 14 hour flight from New York to Dubai. That can happen anywhere, really. (Though it seems to happen more often on cheaper airlines).
@Ludwig van Beethoven better late than never
Great video! The one thing I don't understand is why do they have the mini tray tables? Wy not the standard size ones? Unless your in the big front seat, you have nothing to rest your laptop on.
We need those front seats in europe as well. The only thing missing in european air travel.
Hell yeah been waiting for this
Great to see you guys back superb video Nicky looking good having lost some weight (must be a lack of business/first class in flight meals)😀 looking forward to some more when will Jean make an appearance?.👍👍👍👍
Next time your flying spirits, you have to try the cafe tray ITS SO GOOD. If you don't like that try the cheese tray. Both of them are really good, and they're the top foods on spirit. I tried it, and I was really surprised for just a Domestic flight
Very informative and I might add, reassuring. I am booked on my first Spirit flight next month. Just a short fight to Orange County. I am kind of putting my toe in the water so to speak.
For the price of a spirit flight with all those baggage fees YOU COULD GET A PROPER NICE ECONOMY FLIGHT ON A FULL SERVICE AIRLINE So keep that in mind when flying with spirit
Watching this and reminiscing about the days of traveling. But there's light at the end of the tunnel and I'll be flying in August!
Everytime I flew Spirit, I always booked the big front seat. It was worth the extra $55.
That was a great video you should try frontier
The number of people that now use TSA Precheck doesn't help the queue times that much anymore. I use it to not have to take off my shoes/belt and laptop. I also have CLEAR, but that's a mixed bag as well.
OMG you guys finally posted
They're backkkk!
What? Are you trying to tell me that Nicky doesn’t get complementary champagne on a flight as usual? Gutted.
Nice trip report. Looks like they're much better that what I thought
More videos with Stella!
Leaving for NOLA 🎃🏴☠️Halloween and Raider game 👍This airline was only one to offer direct LAX flight to NOLA. Thank you for video. I upgraded to big seats 💺 and glad I did 👍
People pay $50 for a ticket & then complain about paying $3 for a bottle of water. 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
3 dollar waters at planet fitness too
Awesome video man.. My myths about this airlines has been broken.Cool
Do Finnair A350 business and economy. Would love if you did it.
A lot of experienced retired crew from other airlines work for Spirit. Nice people
I have a ryanair flight in like 2 weeks flying from madrid to dublin
I really enjoyed my experience on Spirit from Las Vegas to Houston the crew was great. It's a little spendy for food and drink. I ran up a 70 dollar tab for my sister and I for 2 cocktails and cheese and crackers trays. We were hungry and did not eat or bring lunch. The lady across from us brought herself a nice Caesar salad I told her she came prepared. I do advise eating before you go.
2 double cocktails are $20 each. The cheese tray is $8.50. How does that total $70?
early! love this channel.
Bob was the star of the video
I like to have the option for a cheap ticket. Go Spirit!
Best YT ever
As somone who is 6,5 with very long legs I always struggle on planes becuase of the leg room but I love flying on planes
Economy+ and Premium Economy: allow us to introduce ourselves
When are you going to make a flight comparison of ALL CLASSES like you used to be!?
Maybe they dont have the budget yet
Point Guys are back 😀
We sure are!
We were gonna book a a frontier flight cuz of the price then we saw all of the added costs like a fee for carryons and for snacks so we decided to book with a diff airline cuz for the same price we can go with a better airline, bigger seats and we get snack
Bob was precious lol
I love flying Spirit.
I love Jean and Nicky

😐😐😐😐😐😐
Shout out to the miserable mom and the unfriendly guy sitting next to Nicky🤣 That made me laugh so hard 🤭
I don't understand why people hate spirit. They are a great airline. There are much worse like Ryan air, or frontier. Spirit is pretty ok.
why? we were on with them for an hour and 15 minutes on their customer service, just to get disconnected. Then the flight was delayed consecutively two days ago with zero announcements whatsoever. Randomly assigned to second to the last row.
@@rac2327if you want a specific seat, pay for it. It’s not that complicated. The website asks you no less than 3 times about bags and seats. Waaaaah
The long queues must be more of an American thing because I fly BA out of T5 at LHR a lot and I'm in and out of security in maybe 4 minutes maximum
Spirit does offer Wifi now on their neo's, the ones with the little dome on top have it. I fly them a couple times a year, the crews are always polite, passengers.... sometimes its an issue. Weather delays happen, though the Biden mandate delays this summer however hit everyone. The big front seats are the way to go, plus they fly out of ACY, which for me I prefer over Philly. It's not a business airline really, they are great for vacation spots in the south, even flew them to aruba. Their app is ok. If you don't boost your ticket, the bag weight is only 40lbs, not 50 like most. They board carry on first, then window, middle, isle. It's probably the most efficient way i think.
Plz test the new norwegian airline Flyr
If he was doing the cheap, economy way, he should have check-in online in advance (and used the app to download his ticket/printed it at home) and saved the printing fee. Also, should have brought snacks on the plane to avoid paying for food on the plane and brought a water bottle to fill up in the terminal to avoid paying for the water on the plane. I feel like he could have made it cheaper if he tried, but it’s good that he had a good experience overall. Literally my only fear is about the safety standards with Spirit vs major airlines like Delta, AA, JetBlue, etc. do their pilots and FAs get the same safety training and have to have the same grades to pass/get the job? Are they as good at plane maintenance and upkeep as the other airlines? Will they know what to do if something happens?
I have never flown Spirit, but this is the only positive review I have ever seen.
There’s more. Look harder.
I assume Nicky ain't 6'3. As a tall guy I guess it'd be terrible. Can you include your height for those reviews? What works for you might be too small for taller people
Can you please do air Canada 777 all classes so I know if I should fly air Canada
Let's say I checked in online and got both my boarding passes (I will be making a stop at FLL to Newark) when going to the counter to recheck my luggage will they give me another boarding pass???? I heard that they charge???
Omg, yall made it for me to be able to and really not be afraid to fly again. Im disabled where I can't walk and also on the larger size so I was only looking at first/business class seats or train travel from NYC to Miami to catch a cruise ship. It would really be expensive on top of cruise prices. The train would take 2 days and i need a hotel night stay too. Another expense.
But I think I'm comfortable paying extra for Sprit airlines big front seat and checked bag. Also the service looks so nice, sometimes I feel uncomfortable if they're not friendly. Like they judge us. Your attendants were awesome. I follow Points Guy so yall all do a great job. Thanks for this informative video.
