These days, travel photography includes astrophotography, bird photography, studio portraits, and of course, super macro shooting bacteria in the wild. Seriously, people are asking too much, and I'd just use something simple and easy, small and light, and your setup seems to work very well. Photography is supposed to be fun!
Hi Robin! I think you nailed it - sometimes I think people get too obsessed with getting perfect shots. Photography is supposed to be fun and one should not forget to simply enjoy the travelling too.
Moi Matti - the perfect travel combo I used last spring while traveling in Mexico was the same Sony a6700 with the Sony 18-135mm 3.5/5.6 zoom... not as fast as the Sigma but more range, which I prefer. Light and compact, great all around travel camera set up. I will however consider the Sigma fixed aperture lens.
Matti, thanks for the video, it hit home with me. This is the same setup I have purchased for my travel camera and lens setup. Been shooting with Sony since 2018, and Olympus M4/3 since 2012, and this past summer when I was in Thailand for 2 months (my wife is Thai) I had my Sony A7RIV FF gear with me for the first time. All past trips I have had my M4/3 setup. While I loved the results with the Sony, I did not like the weight of carrying 3 fast primes, the 50 f1.4GM, Batis 85 f1.8 and 135 f2.8 along with a Tamron 20-40 f2.8 zoom and all were 67mm filter size, which makes it easier when traveling. When I got back from the trip in late September, the A6700 was finally released and I purchased one immediately. I have added the Sigma f2.8 18-50 zoom, plus a Sigma 56 f1.4, 90mm f2.8 and Sony 15mm f1.4 for my wide angle and all are now 55mm filter size. This kit is less than 1/2 the weight of my past trip and will be my travel kit from now on.
I own the a6500, ZEV10 and recently I bought the a6700! The latest a6700 is the best it’s light and compact! Paired with sigma 18 to 50mm F2.8 lens it is a perfect match. The cinematone profile from the a6700 for video is beautiful!
My favorite travel setup is a body with a telephoto zoom and wide angle zoom. This is usually either a Z fc with 10-24 and 18-400 zooms, or a full frame Z body with 17-35 and a 24-120 zooms.
Very small option: Sony RX100 VA. Pocketable, 300gr. And the 24-70 lens is very fast and optically excellent. Good enough for 30x40cm prints at least. And the camera has an EVF. My option for dirty (or dangerous) areas is my old NEX-6 with the 18-55 or 16-50 and 55-210 kit zooms. They aren't the best optically, but good enough for the 16mp sensor. And they're quite robust and lightweight. You can always find a NEX-6 with two lenses for less than 150€. Remember, how happy we were to have this option ten years ago? It still does the job.
I used this same combo on my last ( long) trip . However, I also had the Tamron 11-20 and the Tamron full frame 70-300 and I took the sigma 56f1.4 as my one prime. I was more than satisfied with the results. The a6700 is a fantastic upgrade and is a joy to use.
@@mattisulanto Yes, but the camera was brand new and I was staying is a place where I could leave most of the lenses if I didn't need to use them that day. Still it did make for a very compact kit compared to my full frame gear! The improved AI auto focus in the a6700 ,especially for birds ( and sheep!) is truly amazing - so much fun!
I have the same combo (a6700 + Sigma 18-50) and it's outstanding as a walk-around kit. It fits in a fairly small bag. The camera is quite advanced. Sony packed a lot into that body. And I was surprised by the quality of that lens. I also added a SmallRig hand grip. As prices go these days (compare $2,400 USD for the Micro Four Thirds OM-1 Mark II, body only!), this combo is fairly affordable. I think it offers a lot of bang for the buck.
I have the A6700 and it is a great camera in every respect, except for that small EVF as another glasses user. The compactness of the camera is great for travel and the results are excellent, but after 4-months use I find I am increasingly moving back to using my full frame 61mp A7Rv for that beautiful clear EVF. However I am often using it with the APS-C lenses for the overall lightness, as in crop mode it still provides the same size 26Mp images and that is quite large enough unless wanting to heavily crop which tends to mostly be wildlife photography.
Matti: As always, excellent observations! For what it is worth, I find myself heading out the door these days with a Sony a7cII with a Sony FE 35 2.8 on it. That setup weighs only slightly over 1 lb. 6 oz. and (given the sensor on that camera) is very “cropable”! The combo fits in a quite small camera bag .. Best wishes in the new year ..
I'm a hobbyist shooter who's considering this camera to pair with my Sony A7iv, but having a hard time deciding between this set up or getting the A7CR, which is in effect both an FF and crop sensor camera, and selling the A7iv. My compact Sony RX100 vii with its 24-200 equivalent zoom lens(f2.8-f4.5) is my travel camera, unless the central focus of my traveling is photography, then I take the A7iv and Sony 24-105 f4 G OSS lens.
I started with a Sony Nex 5N (still have it) and moved to A6400. The size for travel is excellent. Have been thinking about a A7Cii for a full frame in essentially the same size for low light situations but that is a want not a need.
I currently own the Sony a6000 and I've paired it with the Sigma 56 mm f1.4 and the Sigma 18-50 mm f2.8. In the near future I'm going to upgrade with the a6700.
At the moment I own two cameras that I use almost daily: Canon EOS 6D (Mark 1) and Olympus OM-D E-M5 (Mark 1). The most important thing to photograph on any travel is wildanimals so I use 75-300 mm f4-5.6 III lens on Canon and 75-300 mm 4.8-6.7 II ED MSC on Olympus. And the most important thing for me on almost any travel is taking pictures so I usually take both combos with me. If not I’ll just be using my cellphones (Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and others).
Nice combo! Lens @ 290g and camera @ 403g so just over 700g! You could add the 11mm 1.8@ 181g and you would still be under 1 kg Do wish it’s stab was mft level, but pretty close with EIS it appears. Some great photos! Enjoyed the colours and seeing your friends!
Hey Matti, hope all is well in KL. Regarding your video and question you placed... Well... For me personally, whenever I go traveling and in particularly traveling away from Portugal, I try to just take my lightest equipment. That means I usually take an Olympus body with the pancake kit lens, together with a fast f1.7 Lumix 20mm lens and the 30mm macro lens. Sometimes I will also take the kit 40-150mm telephoto in case I need some more reach. Those are my takes on this. All the best my friend!!!!
Enjoyed the video. I have to say I'm enjoying the a6700 as well. I've got the sony 11mm 1.8 stuck on it seems like forever it just does everything well. I'm also using the 28-75g2 as it goes well with my a7iv but works quite well on the apsc a6700. As does all my full frame lenses. The evf does leave me wishing for a higher resolution but works fine for what it is. Hey your having to much fun with that cam... ha ha ha take care sir
Always enjoy your content Matti. Lucky you getting away from the winter here, it's coming on strong this year. With the Sony f 2.5 G lenses, I'm happy without a zoom, wonderful pics and an even smaller form factor. It's no problem to carry the 24 mm and either the 40 mm or 50 mm. But for sure, it's hard to beat the GR III X, I only wish it had a view finder from time to time.
In my case the perfect combo is a Sony a6xxx with the Tamron 17-70 2.8. the lens includes VC what is a big help for vídeo or photos in low light. The zoom range is nice.
Very nice combo and this lens is awesome for traveling. I got it on my Leica CL (apsc 24mpix) a little more class than this Sony but less technical ❤with more simple controls. I loved it and loved its weight.
Just rented the A6700 and the X-T5 to compare and ultimately get my first mirrorless camera. Travel photography is one of my main use cases. I'm leaning X-T5 at this point because I like the tilt screen more than the flippy screen and Fuji's film sims make editing optional (which is nice while travelling), but the A6700 was a great camera, too. Can't go wrong with either in my beginner's opinion.
That's one thing I don't like about the 6700. I much preferred the tilting screen. On the 6700 unless the screen is in the same plane as the body when flipped out or sitting flush in the body, you can't use the viewfinder. It is disabled when the screen is at any other angle.
Nice video. I was seriously considering one of these for that AI Tracking system that I hear works pretty well. Have you had a chance to test that out by any chance? Nice shots - the image quality looks great. Very balanced review, well done 📸
It sounds like this Camera and Lens certainly met your requirements. It's good that the most important things worked well like Focus, battery life, great Lens selections. Thank you Matti for saying there is no perfect Camera for everyone, well said. The Sigma Lens had a good Focal length for street photography, thanks for sharing this video. 😊
I had a Sony a6000 but, because of glasses, found the viewfinder impossible. Also wasn’t happy with the aperture on the back disk. Sold it for a Sony a7ii, but now prefer Olympus as is much smaller as are its lenses. My fav lens for travelling is the 12-200mm f3.5-6.3 on my OM 1 mk iii, or the 14-150mm f4-5.6 on my OM 10 mk IV, plus a low light lens, 20mm f1.4 PRO, or the 17mm f1.8. Interesting video, Matti, many thanks.
As always Matti you do a very good job! 👌I have had this camera for two months now and rarely a day goes by that I dont find something new that it can do. It far exceeds the A6600 it replaced, The Sigma lens was very good but I felt limited in its reach and swapped over to the Tamron 17-70 which I found was much better for my needs. The downside for travel use is that it is a much bigger and heavier lens than the Sigma 18-50. The images though do make up for these shortcomings.
I travel with a 28-75 lens and Sony A7R III. So, the same focal length as A6700 with 18-50. It works, but quite often, the zoom range is too limited. With my camera, I still have 18mp, if I crop to APS-C, but that doesn't help at the wide end... What I rarely need, is the bright max. aperture. That's why I think that a 24-105 on full frame or a 16-70 on Aps-C are much better travel zooms. Unfortunately, both Sony lenses are outdated and need to be replaced by mk2 versions, especially the overpriced 16-70. And there aren't many third party options. Some might consider the Tamron 17-70, but it's huge. Might be a good choice for cameras without IBIS. Another option would be a 18-135mm lens for Aps-C. As the Sony lens comes with OSS, the cheaper A6400 is by far good enough as a travel camera. Or A7C/A7C II with Tamron 28-200, if you prefer a full frame camera. What I'd really want for the A6700 is an optically excellent 16-70 f4, lightweight, compact, affordable, without OSS.
Useful video Matti - thanks. My Olympus EM5 mk iii has a sticking shutter issue, but I’ll still use that for travel and just use the electronic shutter. I have a Sony a6500 but prefer the smaller MFT lenses for travel. I’ll be taking the 17 & 25mm Oly 1.8 primes and my trusty Lumix 12-60 f3.5-5.6. Enjoy the warmer weather out there!
Kiitos selkeästä kerronnasta maanläheisellä tyylillä, 61 v olisi kiinnostunut valokuvauksesta, pohdin kovast uusinta iPhone 15 pro maxia vs Sony a6700.
@@mattisulanto I totally understand as I asked a bit strange question with an overwhelming number of cameras :) But just from sheer image quality, which one would you choose?
@@SuperCern I have not used the Fuji or the Nikon so I can't really comment. If we only look at the image quality the FF A7C has a minor advantage with its bigger sensor. All those cameras make great shots in the right hands. Canon battery life is not good if that matters for you.
Hi Matti, I can't claim it is the best travel combo, but certainly it is pretty decent one (even though I simply don't like the design of Sony cameras - yes it's silly a bit, I know). Anyway, my favourite travel combo is EM1 III + 12-100/4. And I must admit when hiking I somehow again came to taste of my good old EM-10 III + PL 15/1.7 + Oly 40-150/4-5,6. The only problem of carying more lenses is, that I pretty frequently think I have the wrong lens on for the given moment 😅 Cheers from the frosty snowy Czech Republic! Vaclav
Do you ever consider a LUMIX G9II or S5II? I love my Sony A7IV, but I was really impressed by the IBIS in LUMIX G9II. I’m wondering if I should switch.
If the IBIS is the most important feature for your photography then you should consider Lumix. I'm very happy with my cameras and don't plan to switch any time soon.
@@mattisulanto Thank you. I am torn between 6700 and a7c2 as I shoot mostly 4k60, and both camera weight almost identical, I am planning to use it for travel, I have both APSC /full frame lenses. Any suggestions? Thank you.
Whilst I’d prefer the weather sealing of a Fuji XT4 with this same lens; I think I’d love to see a Sony A7IV camera with the latest Sony APSC sensor. Likewise I’d love to see an XT4 body with the guts of the XS20 with the 3.69 EVF. Call it an XT4 The Second
I notice in some of your videos lately that you seem to be living in Kuala Lumpur now. I am currently in Kuala Lumpur for awhile with my wife. I am thinking of buying a Sony A6700 while here. Can you suggest a good place with good prices? Thank you. I am here with my Olympus PEN-F and E-M10 II, but have also become interested in the A6700.
I don't live in KL but sometimes I spend time there. My favorite Sony dealer is Studio Saloon at Pudu Plaza but I don't know is they have the best prices. YL camera is also a reputable camera store.
Tbh i really wanted to switch from my fullframe set into this combo, it's small compact, best autofocus, i rarely use evf so im just kind of pretend it doesnt exist. Combine it with a small gimbal like rs3 mini and that would be perfect 👌and not mention, apsc lens is far more affordable, and small too.
This is a major reason I went with micro four thirds: everything is just way smaller and cheaper! And I think the benefits of larger sensors are definitely overstated.
All true, Matti. Only for me (I had A6500 and A7 II) using Sony makes really no fun. Sony is technically very good, yes. But not the right system for me. Ok, my travel camera is Canon M6II. Technical and In lens opputunities a little bit weaker than the Sony. But with this I feel desire to photograph. In difference to Sony this is sympathic to use.
Simple and easy? Asking too much? I manage to know what equipment I take on a trip when what others need I don't have the slightest idea, sorry I can't help... :-)

Thanks for sharing. I have used the Tamron and was considering it, but the size was too much this time. It's an excellent lens nonetheless.
Thanks for sharing your MFT travel gear.
@@mattisulanto should have mentioned Matti that the Sigma is definitely on my wish list so great to see your review. Thx.
surprise to see Ipoh photo showed up. I am from ipoh.
I had a good fun in Ipoh, very nice.
Kiitos selkeästä kerronnasta maanläheisellä tyylillä, 61 v olisi kiinnostunut valokuvauksesta, pohdin kovast uusinta iPhone 15 pro maxia vs Sony a6700.
Kiitos. Ehkä sinun pitää vielä hieman pohtia aihetta, jos nuo kaksi ovat vaihtoehtoja😀
Sony a7c with my Sigma 35mm f2. Maybe an additional Samyang 75 1.8 in case I wanted to take some portrait of my kids.
Thanks for sharing. That Sigma is a gem, super nice lens.
This one vs Sony A7C vs Canon R8 vs Fujifilm X-20 vs Nikon Z5? Mainly for stills shooting. Product photography, family photograpy and travel.
I honestly can't say which one of those you should buy.
Hi Matti,
I can't claim it is the best travel combo, but certainly it is pretty decent one (even though I simply don't like the design of Sony cameras - yes it's silly a bit, I know).
Anyway, my favourite travel combo is EM1 III + 12-100/4. And I must admit when hiking I somehow again came to taste of my good old EM-10 III + PL 15/1.7 + Oly 40-150/4-5,6. The only problem of carying more lenses is, that I pretty frequently think I have the wrong lens on for the given moment 😅
Cheers from the frosty snowy Czech Republic!
Vaclav
Thanks for sharing your favorite travel gear.
@@mattisulanto I wanted steadier walking footage, but I do prefer Sony’s layout.
@@AprilClayton No camera is 100% perfect and you just have to decide on the one that is the best compromise for you.
Hiya!. perfect upload. have a good day. ✨
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you for the video. I wonder is there any quality lost when attach to A7C2 shooting 4k60 (since a7c2 has the apsc crop)?
To me the A6700 and the A7IV video look the same if I shoot 4k60.
@@mattisulanto Thank you. I am torn between 6700 and a7c2 as I shoot mostly 4k60, and both camera weight almost identical, I am planning to use it for travel, I have both APSC /full frame lenses. Any suggestions? Thank you.
My Travel Combo is Sony A7cII and Sony 24mm.f.2.8 G plus Sony 40mm.f.2.5 G 👍
That sounds good. I have the same lenses and love them both.
Have the same lens for Fuji xt-5, it's a great travel lens.
Thanks. Sure, it's as good on a Fuji😀
Thanks. What's wrong with the A7IV FF sensor? You can still use it in APS-C mode if you want.
@@mattisulanto 26mp vs 13mp but yes for all intents and purposes that could be done well and maybe 13mp for travel photos is perfectly fine.
@@mattisulanto Thank you for the info! I will go to Pudu Plaza and check out the stores there.
If price is no issue, Sony A7cr+Sony 20-70 ist the best Travel Combo…in my opinion
Thanks for sharing. If money is no issue there are many great options, of course😀
I was thinking this combo but only had money for Pocket 3 Creator Combo. Keitin kahvit pitääpä katsoa tämä video.
The Pocket 3 is superb for vlogging and beats most other cameras in that.
@@mattisulantoyes and great family video camera here in dark North
Small and unobtrusive? The Pana GM 1 with the 12 - 32!
That's on another level, of course😀
Tbh i really wanted to switch from my fullframe set into this combo, it's small compact, best autofocus, i rarely use evf so im just kind of pretend it doesnt exist. Combine it with a small gimbal like rs3 mini and that would be perfect 👌and not mention, apsc lens is far more affordable, and small too.
Thanks. I can recommend this definitely based on my experience.
Thanks. You have to choose the system that is fun, it's very important.
The Sony RX10 III and IV are the best travel cameras in my opinion.
Yeah, very nice compacts both.
I have a RX10 M3, it is very good! I covered all the focal lengths. The downside is it’s very heavy!
Thanks
Welcome
Sony needs to hire some better styling designers, nice cameras with about as much style as a Whirlpool dishwasher.
Honestly I think they look amazing! I love the blocky, appliance aesthetic.
I also like Sony design language.
Simple and easy? Asking too much? I manage to know what equipment I take on a trip when what others need I don't have the slightest idea, sorry I can't help... :-)
If it's ain't the Olympus or the Panasonic, then it's garbage for me! Sorry but can't lose my loyalty! ❤
How do you know if everything else is garbage if you never even tried?😀
@@mattisulanto hi Matti, I'm just saying like figure of speech, because of my extreme love zand loyalty to the M4/3 system and the brands of the founders of Olympus and Panasonic, believe me I horded up about 10k US dollars worth of Olympus and Panasonic equipment in my home! I have a M4/3 addiction, lol.... ❤️
@@mattisulanto I know Sony claimed to be the best camera systems out there but don't bother me and I stay with my Olympus/Panasonic M4/3 cameras and lenses. And I know Sony have cooperative with Zeiss like Panny has the Leica and I have some Leicas, and I do love the Zeiss and I do respect the Sony and all Sony shooters...
@@mattisulanto I'm very happy with my old Olympus gear! Not the 50MP motivating me but for me more challenging making photography with maybe with 16MP and try achieve my best compositions and exposures with lesser then even 20MP. Thanks. Im started the trend of hording lenses, primes and zooms...

Is not perfect travel combo, because is big.
Let me guess Fuji shooter? 😂
@@lewcehjitl3282 No, he travels with canon powershot...🤣🤣🤣
@@replay0712 Honestly the G7Xii is a fantastic little camera. The only reason I sold mine is because it was getting dust in the lens and I didn't want to risk keeping it until the dust started to affect the images. It was genuinely one of my favourite cameras and gave me some of my best photos. My GH5ii doesn't quite compare when it comes to size and weight lol
