I know this seems like a dumb question. Is there a time when it's OK not to split the cases ? I have never split the cases on any bottom end of any motorcycle I have ever owned. Then again, I don't wring the crap out of any bikes I have and now own..
well, I've always used the Harley Service manual for determining bearing wear...if things are within range there, and the crank doesn't have excessive endplay....or metal debris in there....probably no need to split the cases…. Back before the Evos came out in 84...I used to hear of guys running shovelheads 100,000 miles before cracking the lower end....but they weren't hammering them either.
not everything lives forever and not leak. two good reasons to look at things and reseal the cases to stop leaks. when you are this fair apart anyway it is stupid not too do it. tatro
Ok, I agree if the motor is already out of the frame....I was thinking of when I just did top ends on my 72 Ironhead….the lower would last as long as maybe 3 valve jobs, or 2 cylinder clean-ups....S&S lower end stuff....
....worse would be my flywheels out my twin cam screamin eagle 103...the thing shakes like nobody's buisness....guaranteed they're out of true... Those needles would be moving an inch at least...
