  • "Your Cheatin' Heart" on a Hammond B3 with Trek II string bass accessory on pedals, and added simulated guitar using the Grarage Band app on an iPad. If I was playing in a band and accompanying a guitar, this is how I would play that accomaniment.

You are right, these older Hammonds are very nice sounding instruments. And Hammond "scanner type" vibrato on the #3 setting sounds somewhat Leslie-like. These older Hammonds with the wood enclosed vibrato line boxes mounted on the underside of the console top seem to have a better sound than the newer ones with the smaller, all-metal vibrato line on the back of the upper manual. Personal choice maybe, but I'm not the only one who thinks that way, And yes, you really need at least a 25 note pedalboard to play good bass lines.

I like the Ken Griffin style. What is the melody registration and please show the left hand for the Griffin effect. Excellent rendition.

If you're referring to the second chorus, melody is all drawbars out to position 8 except first two at zero. Left hand is roughly a triangle shaped pattern with first white out to 8 and others progressively farther in,last white at zero. slight amount of repeat echo added. This is roughly what Ken would have used on his version of Lazy River, It Had to Be You, I'don't Know Why, and others that he played in that style. I think this is what you are asking about. No vibrato, BTW. and I think a significant factor is the repat echo, which Ken Griffin would have done with a specialized method of tape recording known as tape echo. Today, we use digital delay to produce this effect.

You're absolutely right. Played that many times in several skating rinks. sometimes on a CV, sometimes a B2 or B3, whatever the rink had. but invariably rink Hammonds went right out into the speaker system, never a Leslie to be found there!

This is a 1955 B3 with earlier style wooden 18 section vibrato line box, all original capacitors, which have aged somewhat but in my opinion that aging makes the vibrato exceptionally good.

@@helio85384 A Hammond with a good vibrato system does not, in my opinion, need a Leslie, although many people would not agree with me about that. The Leslie was invented to add vibrato to the early Hammonds that did not have vibrato, because initially, Hammond could not add vibrato with the tone wheel system. Leslie's speakers relied on the Doppler effect to produce vibrato in the sound waves leaving the speaker cones. Hammond's scanner type vibrato was developed to add true pitch vibrato and makes use of an "electronic Doppler" effect, and so in some ways, it does to electrical waves what Leslie does to sound waves, which is why it sounds so good. But a Leslie is nice to have also, and it does improve the sound of many other electronic organs. One of the nice things about Hammond scanner vibrato is that Hammond vibrato works with all kinds of ordinary speakers.
