  • Clutter Spotlight | Pens, Paper, and Pocket Findings
There’s a few different approaches people take with decluttering. The Kon Mari Method says you should do categories, one at a time, while the Messy Minimalist method would have you running from room to room, rage purging whichever area causes you the most stress. I’ll be the first to say this probably isn’t the MOST effective way to go, but it’s pretty gratifying none-the-less. There’s also the Mins-challenge approach, where you let go of more and more items each day, growing with the number of days you’ve been in the challenge.
Today, I’ll be working closer to the KonMari Method, attacking three very specific types of items: Pens, paper, and pocket findings.
Pens and paper are pretty self explanatory (wanna try guessing how many pens I have??). "Pocket findings" in our house usually consist of a few things: Misc hardware, loose change, and trash. It’s funny, because at some point in the last 15 years, pockets in women’s clothing seemed to vanish (much to my dismay!). That being said, as a female, their absence has really cut down on the amount of misplaced stuff over the years! It was like carrying around little dumpsters all day! Even still, we have a lot of little piles to take care of. Tidying up things will make a huge difference in just a couple hours! Enjoy!

My friend had a "rock" garden near her front steps where they kept their kids favourite pebbles, stones and seashells. I thought it was a great idea.

Pens!! I'll never forget when I was visiting my grandparents years ago and inevitably started cleaning up after a few days. My grandpa was one of those hoarders before the word existed...and I couldn't resist trying to bring a little order to the chaos, but I always tried to be careful because I didn't want to hurt his feelings. There were several cups full of pens on the kitchen bar where Grandpa often did his "business" stuff for the farm. The cups and probably most of the pens were giveaways, and I'm sure he never left a supplier or store without picking up a pen or two, or whatever else was on offer.
Well, I noticed when I needed a pen and grabbed one, that a lot of them didn't work. That's frustrating when you encounter it repeatedly. So I decided to sort out all the ones that didn't work, and throw them away. I scribbled on a notepad for a while and divided all the pens--maybe close to a hundred--into "works" and "doesn't work." I proudly showed Grandpa the result, and said, "Now we can throw away the ones that don't work so we don't keep grabbing them." Imagine my shock, when he wouldn't let me!! He would only allow me to put the non-working ones into a different cup from the ones that were still good.
That was my first big revelation into how deep the problem goes, for someone afflicted with this...illness? I couldn't get over it, day after day, as I had to look at that cup of useless pens on the counter. How could someone be so irrational as to keep items that would never be useful again? (No, none of them were refillable.) I also learned that if you're going to clean up for a true hoarder, you can't let them see what you throw away! Of course, that's also why they won't TRUST us to clean up. :P

" Imagine my shock, when he wouldn't let me!!" YES! I'm a child and grandchild of hoarders - guess who's been dealing with the inherited hoard? It's a full-time job.

Hello Rachel, so happy to see you back! Thks for all your videos, you supported me so much after the lost of my Mother,

Omg!! POCKET FINDINGS are my man's issue too!!!! Screws, wire trimmings, receipts, receipts and more receipts, coins, velcro (yes velcro that gets stuck on your sweaters and shoe laces...) I thought my man was the only one who carried and dumped trash around the house. 🤣😘

Thanks for keeping it real! As an aspiring minimalist who lives in a house full of children and non-minimalist adults (I have extended family who also live with us), the struggle for a tidy house is real - especially the living room where the kids are often hanging out when they are in the house.
Also, the box cutter from the pocket, the excess of pens, and random lone Magic card floating around were way too relatable. 😂

This video gives me confidence to post my own, real videos. I always feel like I have to clean up before creating a video. Standby for video...
Keys... Old ones I know I don't need (such as for a car we no longer have) I nail them to the inside of the garage door frame. Its kind of a key scrapbook for me

You were the first minimalist I'd ever watched, and because there were a backlog of your videos, I got to binge watch them for a couple days! That started me watching other minimalists and becoming a minimalist myself! But you were my favorite and I was SO disappointed when you had your baby (a GOOD thing!) And quit making videos for the most part. So it was a great when I decided to Google you and see if you had possibly made another video, and you had! Yay!

I actually thought of you and the Avalanche Effect today when I moved my shoes to another closet, so the board games could go there, but then I needed to move things from the second to the third closet, and needed some hardware from a kitchen cabinet, and needed to reorganise that kitchen cabinet, and I miss some shelving in the living room, and now I ended up with nowhere to put my purses and my workout clothes. Tomorrow I will tie up all the loose ends.

Pens! OMG! They come into our home by the hundreds and then disappear! I swear someone must be eating them. The only ones I can find are the ones that don't write anymore! And there are sooooo many of those because no one throws them out! 🙄

Hi Rachel, nice to see you again. How’s the family? I bet your girls are growing up fast. We probably wouldn’t recognize them. I have quite a few pens and I think you’re right about keeping 10, because I think we say to ourselves, we can never have enough pens. So we don’t get rid of any. Right now we could reduce down to ten and that would be sufficient. We would really never miss the other 100! So God bless you and the family. Hope to see you again soon. Ps, I’m going to get rid of pens today!!! Jean from Arizona 🌻🏜🦂🦎☀️🌴

I am really fussy about pens, and only like certain kinds(fine line, non-smearing). I always refuse free stuff I won’t use, including pens. But somehow I would still end up with a ton of stuff- mostly because grade school supply lists asked for way more than my kids would use up every year. I still have post-its from 12 years ago from my oldest daughter! I finally gathered all the excess pens, markers, crayons etc in good or new condition and donated them to the local grade school. Testing every marker was the worst part, but I am sure some teachers appreciated having them. As to the key issue, I am always afraid to throw them away in case I do need them. So I have a small plastic drawer by my tools that holds all the mystery keys. Nice to see you again!

Pens, papers and pocket stuff - have you been at our house? Pens are numerous but not a problem for me. Spare ones are in a drawer, I have my craft ones in containers and others are put into cups in various rooms. We have a business too so there is always more paper around than I would like *sigh*. We have lots of mystery keys, receipts and workshop bits from my husband's pockets too. I sit them back on his work bench if they are sizable or stash them in his Man Tin if they are small. I'm never game to throw out keys but the have a holding spot in my laundry cupboard. Receipts get filed if they are business ones or may be needed for warranties, or tossed if they are rubbish. Lovely to see you and a great area to focus on.

I think we have even more pens 🤪 just this weekend alone we got 3 new ones from businesses. They are literally everywhere in our house. Your videos are so recognisable and truthful that's why I love them so much. I don't get a bad feeling about our clutter because of your videos. It shows that everyone deals with it. I can't stand clean up videos of already clean houses.

I like glass jars with lids. They hold my sea shells and pebbles and rocks we've collected along our journeys. They are pretty to see, even though I could not tell you from where they were all gathered, just a remembrance that we enjoy rambling. And I also use jars for intermittent storage. I'm thinking a jar of keys would look pretty cool all glistening in the sunshine on a windowsill.
Hope all is well with the family and business! : )

I'm a nurse so Pens are the Bain of my life. I have lots of pens, generally in trays!

I giggled when I saw the keys. Your house is wonderful, I love your little cairns and nature collections. Thank you for reminding me that progress is so much better than perfection. Pocket findings are SUCH A THING! Also junk mail, it’s amazing how much trash is generated even when you go “paperless”. The bane of my cleaning is Bobby pins, because i just leave them everywhere. Also I’m horrible about plucking tags off new items and throwing them on a counter/floor. I don’t know why i do this 😅

Surface clutter can make even a clean house look like a dump. My SO and I made a habit to clear surfaces either right before bed, or before we leave for work everyday. Some areas still get passed over, like my bedroom desk or his nightstand. But, we usually tackle those on the weekends while cleaning. Some surfaces, like the kitchen counter and my work table, get cleared before I leave the space. Keeping those areas clear is vitally important to me being motivated to cook or wanting to start a new project.

I have a spot where I keep four different colored dry erase markers three pens and a few sharpies. This weekend I needed some pen and couldn’t find any. My family takes them and doesn’t return. But I’m sure when I finally get the dishes I’ve packed to go in the attic. Because my daughter insists she’s taking them when she moves out. When they get removed from my table I’m sure I’m gonna find those pens tucked in and around those boxes. Slowly getting there. Thank you for making me feel like I got this

I have a lot of keys also. I recommend for the door keys, create a tag for the keys every time and label them. For the padlock keys, put a piece of colored duct tape or twist tie on the lock and the key, different for each lock and key set, so you can visually match them. Also, get them all on one giant keychain where it is easily removed, but keep them all together in one place when not being used.

Great video and you're a hoot. I don't even try to add more pens to my life as I only use about five total but they just...appear. Honestly. And I live alone so not sure how they creep in. Keys!!! ARRRGGGGGHHHH!!! Every time I go through bags of really old stuff in my closets I always find keys and have no earthly idea what they were for. I've always kept them, just in case but, at this point, the keys to my apartment, car, and parents' house are on my keychain. I don't travel anymore and, if I decided to take some trip on a whim, I'd need an updated tote bag so luggage keys can go. When I find extraneous keys from now on I'm going to dump them; obviously they're not for anything I'm using.

Love the rock garden idea. Or if you have plants outside in pots then your kids could decorate around the edges or something. I remember doing that when I was a kid.
The keys-I kinda wanna see you just throw them out too. So you don't have to worry about it anymore. But I agree that probably isn't the smartest idea. Maybe put all the miscellaneous keys you don't know the use for on a large ring and then whenever you're bored or your kids are bored. Take one out and go around the house trying to figure out where the lock is. Can't find it. Let go of the key. It's a gradual declutter but a declutter anyways. And the keys won't be all over the house anymore.

I finally put a basket on the table just inside the door. Hubby is really good about dumping everything in that basket. It does mean that the basket is a disaster...and the table is still a disaster, but his pocket stuff is contained.

Watching this while my desk, bookshelves, and dresser are covered in papers, pens, and miscellaneous items. I’m impressed by your count of 65 pens, although I myself found around 120 pens. Yikes. As for paper, I have a trash bag full of it to be recycled, so that’s exciting. I love how you always make different clean ups seem easy, this motivated to go through my stuff again and clear off my surfaces tonight!

My pocket findings and excessive pens are on purpose. I love creating assemblage collages so I pick up stray pieces of this and that to use in my projects. I do have a specific place for them so no messiness. I gasped when you said you throw away keys and then saw you toss that handful of pens. So much art loveliness!
I have probably 20 pens at my desk (a variety of colors of ink for journaling, planner, and art) and 5 in my purse. My son keeps a stash of 5 or so next to his favorite living room spot so 30ish in my house at any given time.

Miss your videos Rachel! 'The bane of my existence' lol is currently clothing. We have too much washing and clothes just tend to hang around the place. We have a 19 month old so I like to have some spare clothes for him. But I think we need to further declutter all our clothes especially mine as I have real trouble getting rid of my vintage clothing.
Pens- we have 14 regular pens.

One way to deal with coins was to keep my son's large piggy bank next to the laundry machines. That way we could put them straight in the piggy bank. Another thing to do can be to place a small jar or container, and when it's full take it to a Coinstar or banks that have a coin counting machine. That way it can be emptied more often and not be too heavy. As for the rocks, teach your child to take just one. Let her know that she can pick them up and hold them for a while, but to leave them at the beach because they are more beautiful there. Not everything is for us to take. As for your drift wood mentioned in another video, maybe you can create a sculpture at the beach. Every time you see a piece of driftwood, place it in a certain area, until it becomes a masterpiece. That way more people can enjoy it, and you can feel proud of creating something nice and it doesn't pile up at home. I love your videos and have learned a lot from your experiences. Thank you!

YAY so happy to see a video from you! :) :)
You motivate me to declutter! Except for ONE thing. You ADDED something into my home LOL
A couple years ago you were drinking out of a hand blown glass... omg I fell in love with it! I immediately went out and found some online.
I ordered them and realized they didn't deliver to Canada. So I had them delivered to my mom (who lives in the US). I only see her every two years (Sadly!) and I JUST got the glasses from her when we went to visit last week. ... worth the wait. So awesome :) Thank you for that 'joyful' addition to our home :)

Seems like some of your de-cluttering is a lack of personal training than actual stuff. I used to have pens everywhere too, then I put jars in the areas that I look for pens the most, now all my pens live in those jars.
As for 'pocket findings', have a caddy at the coat area, the bathroom and the laundry room. You unload all your stuff there, then when it gets full, you can place the items back where they belong.
Developing new habits (for the entire family) was my hardest challenge when I de-cluttered. It's helped me stay tidy so much!

There is always time when cleaning to rock stack! 😆My hubs and I have a lot of key things and my fix is a medium mason jar. When ever I figure out what a key is for I label it with a tag and then when the jar gets too full I take all the ones that have been in there for over a year (just in case it is a seasonal specific toy) and then I feel safe to toss them. It also acts as a toy for my curious 19 month old son. I have one pen drawer (little supply cubby) that gets emptied when it gets un-close-able. My trend is that stuff has to fit in it's spot or risk being purged!

Great editing. What about clear the surface cleaning? Take a hamper, gather all the stuff. Make decisions in a clearer environment. I read once to be fanatic about one clear surface, then that would have an domino effect. I think it was the gals whom one would eventually make the Fly Lady System.

So many still in the package!! My kids made fun of me when I was decluttering and going on about all the pens.
