--------------------------------------------------
Working with mixed media using a variety of different paints. I work rapidly but build up the paintings in layers to make sketches that can be referenced in studio paintings.
Lewis Noble has lived and worked in Derbyshire since 1996. His focus lies in the physical and emotional impact of the landscape on the senses and the effect this experience has on us.
His paintings are not snapshots or photographic frozen moments but through repeated layering and eroding of the painted surface, they contain all of the time it takes to make them.
The result is a body of work that speaks to the heart of what it means to be part of the environment.

Wow I would love to see more drawings like this! I love the idea of just abstract charcoal drawings that aren't meant to be anything in particular
Thanks. I was really just demonstrating the properties of the material in this one.
😵🤯I CAN USE WATER WITH CHARCOAL?! 🤩🤩🤩🤩This changes EVERYTHING! Thank you Mr! 💜
Going through comments I'd missed - have fun!

Just discovered compressed charcoal. So this is a great help. Thank you Lewis.
It’s good stuff, thanks!
Thanks, Lewis. Always a joy to watch your process. I bought some charcoal six months ago. Been too scared to actually use it! Fortune favours the brave. I guess art does too.
Go for it. Prepare for dirty fingernails!
Most instructive. Has helped me to find a way to 'free up'. Thank you!!
Thanks for your thoughts on sketching! It looks joyful!
I love compressed charcoal I too prefer it to willow. Since discovering CC it's all I use. This video helped a lot, again thanks for a great video!! I took your advice from another video, I stopped taking photo's leaving my camera behind...it was freeing sketching the views. I did this when I went on holiday before all the pandemic rubbish happened, I found my sketches were more interesting!!
Photos can be useful but not when they're a substitute for looking. Thanks for watching.
Thanks to for this. I love the simplicity and the fun. Want to try it!
Go for it!

I don't, but any spray fix will work fine. Thanks!
Has anyone ever tried mark making with charcoal briquets..? It's a serious question. :-)

Do you varnish the charcoal drawing before using acrylic paint, to stop it from smearing.

Really like the combination of charcoal & pencil! You talk about using sketches in collages; how would you go about stopping the coal from smearing in a collage?
Thanks. I’ll try to do it in the next video.
