    Dude, I remember early 2000, my work mate was boasting to me that he got broadband enabling him to download an MP3 as quickly as it plays. That's 1mb per minute.

      Ahhh the glorious days of waiting 12 minutes to download an mp3 at 56k. Its insane to think i can now download my entire music collection that I've been collecting since the days of 56k, in the same about of time it took to download 1 mp3 back then.

      Awww man, hell yeah. Bringing back the memories of my utter delight at Nildram (God bless their souls, they were great) doubling my line speed from 1 to 2Mbps. And that click of the PCI ADSL modem. Aaaaah halcyon days. Now it's 900Mbps synchronous and I'm like "meh" :D

    I just had Plusnet installed a couple of weeks ago, 900mbps package. I upgraded the router from the provided one, horrible white colour and 560mbps when I was stood next to it. I went for the TP link ax95 and now get 960mbps so happy with that, certainly glad I purchased a new router.

My current up time is 218 days since a crash/restart. My poe switches have 580 days and my usg has 580 days too - really I should update them as there all running old firmware, but its a case of if its not broken don't fix it for me and as for speeds, top notch

    After ordering mine and viewing your video as I waited. I knew my router wouldn't be able to push the Gigabit speeds. I was using VyOS on a Hyper-V VM beforehand and it would have only been capable of ~400Mb/s. I ordered a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X to replace it, since it's a fork from Vyatta and the command line is very similar. Speeds through that (with hardware acceleration enabled) I'm able to achieve a good 900 Mb/s with no extra configuration. With 5 networks, firewall rules, policy routing a single Wireguard interface along with a (small) OSPF instance - I can push around 850 Mb/s using BTWholeSale Speedtest. The additional issue here in the UK with BT, is we're forced to use PPPoE which is additional processing. Without that, I wonder what type of additional throughput I could get.

  • @ram64man

    The regulation on minimum speed should be narrowed, if your paying for a speed under fttc your legally required to have a speed just 30 mbs before they have to investigate and your free to cancelled, to say you can get under half your paid for speed without them having to do anything is just wrong

    I don't have Fibre 900 yet but i can get it in my area now so should be getting it soon! i have been using the BT Smart Hub 2 though for around 8 months now and its is alot more reliable than the previous smart hubs the only issue i found was the wifi discs they send you are a bit hit and miss. they seem to work fine for months then all of a sudden they loose connection then they wont connect back up so you gotta re pair them to the hub which is a bit of a pain but apart from that its been fine. just need to upgrade my powerlines to 1000mbps ones so i can then be ready for fibre 900 when we get it soon!

    I got this package, I’ve had the outside fitted got to wait till the 21st for the inside to be done and then off I go on the 23rd. I will be paying £83 with BTTV and weekend calls. Yep not cheap but this package is only £5 more then what I’m paying now and then rises by another £5 after 6 months.The speeds I’m at now on the highest package for my area is roughly 37 down and 7 up. I know to some it’s a lot but it’s a huge gain for no more then £10 for 2 years.

  • @tech360gamer

    I will be getting 300Mbps this month with EE but it’s using the g fast technology which is not actual fttp compared to your one. It is pretty good though, that copper (within distance) can do 300Mbps and higher. Thanks for the video too. I’m looking forward to the fast speeds now. Like you mention though at least some more people are getting 900Mbps now. Hopefully within the near future it’ll be more common for even half a gigabit speeds to be the norm in the UK.

    There's is a 50mbps upload cap glitch on the Smart hub 2 which could be the reason for the fluctuations. Upload can affect download speed at times. Sort of like when you have a lot of people on the same time as you during peak hours of the day 6-10pm. Apparently BT are working on a fix for it. I'm not sure when it will be sorted though.

    Your connection is most likely provisioned as a gigabit service, but being marketed and sold as a 900megabit service to stop people complaining they're being short-changed. People in the past have always complained that they're paying for "up to" a certain speed and not getting it.
    With how ethernet works, if a customer is sold a gigabit service, they would (or at least most people would) expect to go onto speedtest.net to test their speed and expect 1000megabits. If you think about the OSI model, the physical copper/fibre is layer 1, the ethernet frames are on layer 2. At layer 2, the throughput at 1000megabits/sec will translate to about 940megabits of throughput at layer 3 at the most (depending on the data payload size); this is owing to the headers in the ethernet frames using some of the layer 2 throughput.
    The long and the short of it; providers are not marketing their services as gigabit as they would get no-end of flack for the above reason.

    Maybe a bit delayed here... You will need to check the MTU size on your hub/router (you need to move away from that consumer gear. I use Ubiquiti with a controller and it is rock solid and get full speed).
    Are you bridging the BT hub and using the linksys unit, or is the Linksys unit connected via WAN to the GPON? The MTU size will affect you throughput through the linksys unit
    Anyway, ditch it all and go for the Ubiquiti UDM with some Unifi AC Nano APs. You will not regret the move.

    Our connections mostly are 1gigabits with the fastest plan being 10 gigabits on ftp we went with a higher power fritzbox+ nokia ont for connections up to 1gigabit and especially design ont from Nokia for 10gig

    I have always bought and used my own router as the ones I’ve kept getting supplied with were totally garbage. Totally worth looking into. I’ve been interested in possibly upgrading my router because we have a gigabit Ethernet connection Upload and download and my router can’t Output those type of speeds. I think the max mine can do is about 400 to 300 up and down. Pretty nice overall but ya know could be better.

    Great informative video. Thanks for sharing. Just ordered full fibre 900 from the 300/50 package, same as you. I already have the homehub 2 or what ever it's called. Hopefully I get some big improvements. I have noticed that my BT speeds are what they should be, but on WiFi the speeds are seriously degraded & I have 4 BT extender discs in the house !!!!!
    Regards the depression. Been there & done that. Hopefully you have a good support network around you. It can be beaten. Have liked & subscribed. I would be interested in an upgraded router as well once one has been fully evaluated & is working well. Best wishes & stay safe

    Maybe this comment has been made before. If so - apologies. Otherwise, is it not possible that BT recognise their own equipment and therefore are able to discriminate against LinkSys, Belkin etc. routers and limit their throughput?? I ask this because I am convinced that this happened to me years ago.

    Help or advice please. I have signed up and just had Full Fibre 900 installed in my home and I am severely disappointed with what I have so far. To be clear it is full fibre Halo 900 I went for with guaranteed minimum speed of 455mbps and max speeds up to 930mbps! The hub is located in the bottom front right room (think 4 rooms downstairs, 4 bedrooms upstairs in a house about 15 years old). Speed when in same room as hub (using speed tester in myBT app), to hub 430/96 (down/up), to device 58/27. Speeds in bedroom upstairs (upstairs front right), to hub 537/99, to device 30/27. Speed in back bedroom (upstairs back right - my covid work room atm), to the hub 628/96 to the device 12/11. The device is an iPad Air. Surely these speeds cannot be acceptable. For comparison purposes, on the same device using its 4G mobile connection (also a service provided by BT), in the upstairs back right bedroom, I get 79/38 on Fast.com. In conversation with BT customer help, they basically say they are fulfilling their obligation and it is not their problem. Aside from the fun I am having with BT (I am waiting for a manager to call me) what can I do to get a proper speeds throughout the house? With school going teenagers and having to work from home due to Covid, a functioning internet is now an essential requirement. FYI. I was sent a BT smart hub 2.

    • @alistairjohnson177
      @alistairjohnson177 4 роки тому

      You are testing using an Ipad Air that would then be a wireless connection these speeds are only achievable when using a wired ethernet connection i.e Cat6 cable to the router, I would have thought BT support would have told you that from the get go. Fastest wireless will probably be a few hundred meg/bit on latest 802xx protocols. Functional internet for school? getting 100meg+ right now is more than ample anyway so irrelevant to you.

    • @alistairjohnson177
      @alistairjohnson177 4 роки тому

      Further to this if you have a current 2019/20 IPAD they are capable of 866mps on wifi - but that's theoretical like the 'upto 80meg' FTTC offering has overheads - Latest BT smart hub is using 802.11ax but only on the 5gig/hz band which is hopeless for going through walls of houses rather like mobile 5g (higher the frequency the worse it is to penetrate objects like bricks etc) it is gigabit capable (1.5gigbit theoretical) i would expect you to get around 750ish being right next to the router and assuming no other connections affect speed throughput. But as I stated earlier if you want a full reliable con use Ethernet wire. Testing in bedrooms etc forget getting anywhere near 750mbits using 5g/hz wifi. Only suggestion I could give you would be get repeater wifi boosters but even then they have to receive via 5g/hz through same walls, might increase a bit but not much, better solution would be ethernet wire to the bedrooms from the smart hub to another wifi repeater/hub then connect to that, not the main BT smart hub.
