    Billie had a point tho, and it’s not just western artists who are being so wasteful. I’ve been a fan of kpop for the past 7 years and it’s insane the consumerism culture that runs rampant. People buying hundred of albums for different photo cards, photo shoots, and repackaged with one new song and a lot lot more.

    Vinyl collector here, I completely see where Billie is coming from. There are so many variations coming out for mainstream artists that it is actively oversaturating the market, not to mention that when smaller artists want their own products done, they have to wait months before they can even get the chance if at all, as well as it costing a fortune. Maybe if more mainstream artists embraced the recycled wax practice then it can be less wasteful, as well as actually looking at the demand for albums. I remember seeing when Adele’s latest album came out, stores were lined with different variants and types but the demand wasn’t there for it so ended up taking up space and no one wanted them.

    If anyone needs a relatively light news story, the Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL team) had ordered 18,000 bobbleheads of one former player who they were honoring before a game and everyone who attended would receive a bobblehead.
    A day or two before the game, it was announced that the shipping container with the bobbleheads had been stolen. They were eventually located after being returned to a secure warehouse, so everyone will get their bobblehead. But, I just want to know the thoughts of the people who stole them who were expecting items that could be easily sold without being traced back to them, only to get 18,000 bobbleheads of 1 former NHL player.

    I think Billie has a point. If an artist wants to release an album in multiple different mediums (digital, CD, cassette, vinyl, whatever) that's one thing but having four physical copies of the exact same album with the only difference being an additional song or a change in the cover art is so beyond wasteful. I don't know what the solution would be since the music industry in general is so money hungry and statistics driven.

    I’ve lived on the Missouri River my whole life, and hearing about this chemical spill is heartbreaking not just because of the local impacts, but the impact it may have downstream. The Missouri River is part of a HUGE river and tributary system, which feeds into the even larger Mississippi River watershed, which flows into the ocean. The Gulf of Mexico already is having a problem with dead zones and fish kills because of agricultural runoff from the river.

  • @wubbysimp1234

    The sad thing about the spill in Iowa is that if there is a fine, it will likely be a drop in the bucket for the company. If we want these companies to start taking these things seriously, we need to strike them. Have the fine be a significant percentage of what they made last year. These billion-dollar companies will continue to pollute and not care about our planet because all we do is fine these multi-billion or multi-hundred million businesses a couple hundred thousand or a couple million and say do better next time. Then we are shocked when the same company does it again, and then they use the last fine as an excuse to cut costs while simultaneously giving the CEO and those at the top a much larger bonus. It seems like a tale as old as time.

      The spill reminded me of a mass die-off that happened in Australia a while back. The Menindee Lakes are part of the Murray-Darling water system, and so little water had been flowing through that the lakes became isolated and starved of oxygen. And now that I looked into it, it first happened in 2018/2019 summer, and... again last year. And it all comes down to greed in Iowa and here in Australia. In our case, farms are allowed to pull obscene amounts of water from the rivers far, far upstream to grow crops that just shouldn't be grown in our climate.

I helped him get out of the vehicle and on to the stretcher. I helped gather his things flown from his jeep. All while his family was threatening out loud that they were going to assault me. Despite all the guilt and shame, I only worried for the other guy. Luckily he only had cuts and bruises and even after that, they inflated the situation to say he survived something more horrific. I was fine with it, he was alive and that’s all that mattered to me.
    Still lucky to say that I am 4 years removed of any vehicle accident. That day molded me into someone safer.

It's not just damage to the environment that could be completely preventable, but also how prevalent cancer is in many areas that can be linked to pesticides and fertilizers. There are also issues with air quality and hog/chicken confinements and how they lobby to make everyone else's quality of life lower as they push to allow them closer and closer to larger population areas.

    Billie might want to have a chat with her record label before speaking on the matter of overproducing vinyl variants. Her debut album has about 20 variants, with three more announced for preorder just this past month (a swirly blue one with a glow in the dark cover, a picture disc and a bright orange one). 😅
    Also, her second and most recent album had 8 variants. People say “but those were all recycled vinyl!” No. Only 1 was eco-vinyl. The other 7 variants were brand new “virgin vinyl.”

    • @RyuRaeArashi
      @RyuRaeArashi 29 днів тому +2

      That was exactly her point though, and I think a lot of people are missing this. She specifically called out that you almost have to play the game in order to be successful, and that it isn't a choice they are wanting to make but being pressured into doing in order to succeed. She doesn't want that to be the way the system works, and with more pressure from artists things could change.

  • @aboutsoundandvision
    @aboutsoundandvision Місяць тому +88

    As a record collector I not only agree with Billie Eilish here, I am happy to hear a big name call this out. The record industry hinges on the ability to produce enough product for artists. When Adele's album 30 came out a couple years back it was pressed at almost every pressing plant and backed up the entire industry for over 6 months and as a result drove up the cost of records as a whole. The multiple variants issue is a different side of the same coin. You get big name artists paying pressing plants to skip over their backlog of orders and smaller artists are often left high and dry with fans often having to wait months to get an album from their favorite artists. I think that the sustainability of the production of records is very important and if the hobby is to survive into the future the coversation around the impact on the environment is very important.

  • @lilelbo

      I was just going to say the exact same thing. As someone who is in the kpop community and has seen (especially in the last year or two) the amount of variants that come through for albums. The biggest draw are for the collectible photocards of the members of the group, but it’s gotten to a point now where we’re getting three to four sets potentially to collect, as well as for some groups individual members as a version themselves. It’s getting really insane.

      YES! It's classic industry deflection. Instead of addressing a systemic issue, they turn it into petty "drama" between two women that they can profit off of. It's disgusting, and just another example of what Billie was talking about. But also--she is right for calling out artists doing this. Sure, don't hate the player, hate the game, but at the end of the day, creating all of this waste is a choice, a choice that is both harmful and self-serving. Billie was brave for speaking publicly about this--it's nice to see someone in the music industry actually TRY to be sustainable, particularly someone with the influence of Billie, as it can help raise awareness among her fans.

The only fix to environmental issues is to change every person who is in a position of power, from congress, executives of the corporations that fund politicians, and so much more. Our driving test standards are embarrassingly low, and adherence to the rules or etiquette, or judgement goes out the window. And all any state wants to enforce is the speed limit because "speeding" is an easy buzzword for people to understand.
      There are places with unrestricted speed limits and the accident rate (let alone the fatality rate) is a fraction of ours. If our tests actually required people to know how to properly operate their vehicle, understand the weight of operating a multi ton hunk of metal, and exercise common sense, and if enforcement actually acted on anything other than speed (road rage, cutting off traffic, blocking merging traffic, not merging at the correct speed, driving slow in passing lanes forcing more dangerous right passing, failing to signal, failure to follow lane designations and signage, DISTRACTED DRIVING, and yes EXCESSIVE speeding) then we'd be safer overnight.
      Even with how embarrassingly easy our tests are the first time passing rate is only around 50% in many states. That should scare EVERYONE. Some countries even require individuals to pass winter driving courses so they can be safe driving on ice! Hey Phil, Alabama guy here. Grew up around a lot of hunting/gun culture. Wanna correct one thing in the Haiti story. Hollow point ammo is actually “safer” than full metal jacket rounds. Full metal jacket (let’s call them normal) bullets are often mostly meant for practice at the range.
    It’s not ideal to use those “normal”rounds for defense or combat because they will tend to pass through the target and then keep going where you then become responsible for everything else the bullet will impact past the target.
    The purpose of the “hollow point” is that it will expand and “dump“ all its kinetic energy in the first thing it hits and won’t over-penetrate the target. Which in a crowded hectic environment like Haiti sounds fucked up but is actually “safer” for bystanders.
    Obviously the Haiti situation is horrible and no one should be shooting at anyone. I’ve spent time down there in the past helping with disaster relief and my heart is breaking for the few people I know stuck in the situation.
    Just wanted to chime in because often media sources don’t know a thing about how firearms work and phrases like “hollow point ammo” just sound scary.

    • @wesleyfravel5149
      @wesleyfravel5149 Місяць тому +8

      Part of the difficulty is, Hollow Points are more dangerous in many ways, as the expansion means that yes, they aren't penetrating as deep, but the wounds are a lot less clean. So they're harder to treat because, just getting the round out is hard. There's a reason they are banned in military conflicts.
      Should add: Remember: This is Hati. They don't have the best health system, so the round can be more deadly not from the bullet itself, but from the inability to treat the bullet.

He's been a musician for over 10 years, they've been on multiple national tours but when I asked about vinyl releases I noticed his demeanor becoming really disappointed as he mentioned Adele by name. He said the shortage she's caused in he vinyl market alone has made the cost and speed of producing vinyl skyrocket and has made it unapproachable for independent bands. Their albums wouldn't be released on time if they had to wait on the vinyl. It just sucks how the mainstream uptick in vinyl production for pop is hurting the grassroots music scene in America.

    To Billies point, she is a billboard chart topping artist. A household name selling out arenas and having her songs in movies - I think she can afford to not sell the vinyl variants. Smaller bands (that are still huge) probably do this to accomodate for the cost of live touring. We know they don't make a tonne from streaming anymore, so the people who are willing to buy vinyl help balance that out. If the consumer is buying multiple variants of the same same album just printed on different coloured vinyl well... thats really on them - if its coloured vinyls of the same album i think most people are just getting one.
    Theres also the fact that in recent years the resell value of vinyl has been more of a long term investment than just a novel way of listening to music. So much of my collection of punk/garage has only increased in value over the years (according to discoggs)

    Swifties themselves are sick of the number of variants and bonus songs for Taylor's albums. They call her Capitalist Queen because of it and complain every time she announces a new one because the bonus songs that are limited to each album make them feel obligated to get all of the variants if they want the full album. That being said, it's definitely not a Taylor-specific thing. Pretty much every artist does this, in every genre, but of course T Swift is singled out by social media goons because she always is.

    Billie has a point, releasing multiple versions of one album on vinyl is not only wasteful for the environment, it also overloads the vinyl pressing plants which causes other smaller artists and bands vinyl album productions to be delayed, sometimes even a year. Jack White who owns the Third Man Pressing plant even made a public plea for large record companies to start building their own pressing plants.

Canada and Mexico are having major illegal gun problems due to the US' lack of gun regulations. Haiti has had a civil war due at least in part to it. If our neighbours, who we should be close allies with for our own safety, are having problems that we can solve, that a large portion of our own population is asking for, why is that something we wouldn't want to invest in?

    To go with the Billie vs Taylor thing, I think one of the biggest issues that goes beyond the vinyls is collectible consumerism. What I mean by that is regular consumer products being made in limited colors and designs to make the item more expensive and exclusive. It’s super apparent in the vinyls, lulu lemon, Stanley cups and a bunch of other popular brands. Not only does this cause harm to the environment, but the rabid way people go after them keeps profits up and just makes it more of a problem.

    In regards to the Vinyl situation, this is nothing new to a K-pop fan. Its been happening for decades already for Korean charts. K-pop albums always come in multiple variants, sometimes up to 12 different variants with specific members gracing the cover. Collectors like myself go crazy and get every one because we want to fill out that collection. This definitely boosts sales. If you look at some of the K-pop acts that graced Billboard charts recently like TWICE, they had 3 variants of the basic album, plus 3 Vinyl variants, plus 9 Digipack versions, and more if you bought the Korea-only variants.

    I'm a fan of artists that regularly release multiple variants. I'm not in love with the practice, however superfans will buy multiple albums to grow their artist numbers whether they are variants or not. One could argue, the retention of the additional copies is higher because there are variants. That's said, I agree with Billie's sentiment that Billboard, Melon and other charting companies could work with artists to find a better metric that hard sells. Spotify and UA-cam listens are evidence of that. There's an answer out there but whether the answer is profitable is yet to be seen.

    I'm a Coloradan. I find it outlandish the idea that what's going on with Oklahoma could be done with anything other than, at a minimum, gross negligence and certainly not out of ignorance of the possible consequences. The idea that a product that is legal some places, while illegal others, could cross state lines and impact criminality is EXACTLY the argument that Oklahoma made when they wanted the Supreme Court to crack down on Colorado in 2016. The difference is that, once it became known how much money was on the line, of course Oklahoma opened the floodgates.
    But, quelle surprise! You mean criminals that have been trafficking in illegal substances under the threat of death will mildly defraud a government agency in an effort to make a portion of their illegal enterprise more cost effective? That they will bring other crime with them? That this will have significant impact on other states where the cultivation and sale of their newly (limitedly) legal product is brought across state lines?
    I mean, of course those uncapped licenses for production will ABSOLUTELY only be used to supply Oklahoma's medical marijuana dispensaries, right? They couldn't possibly be drastically overproducing what would be needed to supply that industry, for which there is (at least in theory) a level of tracking going on as far as how many Oklahomans can purchase medical marijuana and in what amounts they're allowed to do so. As long as we don't look, we can't KNOW. Not for SURE anyway.
    The hypocrisy is WILD to me.

    I think what Billie Eilish does with vinyl variants is very different to what Taylor Swift does. I don't think the issue is having different colours of vinyl, it's having different bonuses added to different vinyls to encourage people to buy multiple copies and bolster their numbers. They'll point and say they sold 15,000,000 vinyls, but leave out the fact that each customer is buying multiple albums.
    Physical media in this day and age is a novelty, but for the record labels those metrics are still very much looked at as make or break for artists, so they do have to play the game, but the game fucking sucks for the planet and it's time to acknowledge that something's gotta give at this point.

      Traditional Album Sales: Physical album sales, like CDs and vinyl, as well as digital album downloads.
      Track Equivalent Albums (TEA): This metric converts individual track sales into album sales by using a 10-to-1 ratio. In other words, ten track sales from an album are equivalent to one album sale.
      Streaming Equivalent Albums (SEA): This metric converts on-demand audio streams into album sales using a ratio of 1,250 paid streams or 3,750 ad-supported streams to one album sale.
