Hi I also have a Butterkofferi, about 8". It is very docile and gets along well with a Texas cichlid; Convict cichlid; Red Hooks and a Tin Foil Barb sharing a 180 gallon aquarium. . The Butterkofferi does not display aggression when eating floating pellets and seems to avoid eating frozen krill. I would like to add a Jack Dempsey, Green Terror and Jaguar cichlid in an effort to add color. It would be great if my existing and planned fish would all be compatible. Thanks for producing your videos! Very informative.
Thank you! For a 180gallon that's a good selection...just be careful with a jaguar cichlid...those can be monsters! You could get a docile one like your butterkoferi because those are know to be monsters as well and yours isn't bad; I had a female jaguar that was pretty docile....but many people can have had opposite experiences! Other then that the rest should go fine together. (a little quarrels for dominance every now and then is normal)
At this point mine wasn't dominate so it didn't...but a few months later when I moved him to his own tank all the gravel was pushed to one side of the tank and when I tried to flatten it back he attacked me!
@@dwsdarius thanks for the info, I think I might be able to hand feed mine as when I feed them they come very close to my hand as it is. They are very interesting Cichlids.
Mine is about 10", have had her(?) in a 90 gal for going on 7-8 years now. Up until today, I've had her in a 90 gal alongside a 55 gal full of Yellow Labs, a Yellow Peacock and a Zebra Obliquidan. Once large enough I've just taken the Peacock, a Yellow lab and the Zebra Obliquidan, and moved them in with the Butterkorei. Lots of places to hide, going to see how it works out! But seems like the slower moving fish stand a better chance not to antagonize the Tilapia, so perhaps best to stick with Central and S American species for several reasons including that!
Good video man! Your a great well educated & informed narrator. Enjoyed listening. I agree with Darius, it's a really interesting fish with personality and attitude. A fish very worthy of the experience of owning. I've seen large ones up to 20 inches. Just be prepared for it, if you decide to try it out. Your informed preparation will ensure your success with this one.
Awesome video, I have 2 myself in a 125, one is about 10 or so inches the other about 6, I have them along with a giraffe cichlid a catfish, can't remember what kind, but it's silver in color and has no eyes which is weird. They really like feeding time as when I lift the lid they come right to the top.
I have a Butterkoferi Talapia she is almost if not a foot in a half. I have 150 gallon tank she killed all the fish she was raised with as babies. I can't put any other fish in the tank with her. Have any suggestions? I like the Oscar's and the red devils. Does anybody know if she will kill them too?
Same here. I had total 10 fishes in my tank 6 of them were Butterkoferi raised as babies, eventually killed around 4 other breed fishes that i had with them and later one of them killed the other 5 of the same breed. Now I am left with single butterkoferi fish in my tank. She is super fast and can chase/bite off any other fish until they die. Please suggest which tiny fish or anyother aggressive fish that I can accompany her?
These are definitely an Awesome Fish. They look awesome, and from the ones I've seen personally they do have tons of personality. What are the juvenile cichlids in the tank with the butterkoferi tho? I find them interesting as well.
i bought the exact looking fish like this months ago, idk if it was the species cus the seller didn't even know what kind of fish it was 😂 but it sure do looks like this but in smaller size like 10/8 cm each, i bought them cus i love their stripes even tho i knew nothing about the species, i put them in the pond tho and there are like 6 of them, they always group together
Hmm, I'm wondering if the pit bull of the American Cichlids (Mayan Cichlid) would be bold enough to establish full dominance over a Butterkoferi. Imagine a 400 gallon+ setup with at least 6 of the most dominant breeds vying for complete RULE. In the end there can only be ☝️.
my festae has just started picking fish off and he's only 3 inches he's killed a 4 inch male green terror 5 inch male white spotted pike cichlid 4 inch female atromaculatum cichlid and last night a 4 inch male maybe cichlid who was bullying him last time I checked but I guess the festae will be a beast when he's older
That really sucks bud, You might have to house him alone. Some of these SA & CA Cichlids don't play well with others. They are often known to have a killswitch and overnight they can decide that they don't want tankmates anymore. It happened with our Midevil but we were home and gave her a tank to herself.
AQUA NUT ye ikr but oddly enough my pair of ellioti cichlids keep him in check and he only chases the yellow acaras abit but I think he will definitely be housed alone
WOW! WHAT A BEAUTY. I HAD ONE FOR 7 YEARS, BUT HE DIDNT SURVIVE MY MOVE. I COULDNT FIND ANOTHER AFTER THAT, SO NOW I HAVE A FLOWERHORN, WHO GREW S U P E R FAST!
@rubber triangle No, I am asking you a serious question. We have a huge tank that we stock fish in, when they get big enough, we eat them. Hence my question: Can you eat them when they get bigger? I am not afraid to eat them if they taste good.
He is a truly amazing fish DW he's so chunky and nicely coloured 🤗🤗🤗
Thank You!
Beautiful tilapia!!!
Beautiful indeed, but very aggressive!
Cheers for the knowledge,amazing fish
Thank You!

I've owned GT's and Dempsey's but never a Jaguar. I'm somewhat hesitant. Thanks for your input. PS: I subscribed to your channel. You do good work.
Definitely a cichlid I'd like to keep one day.
They are awesome! Thanks for watching!
he looks awesome. thanks for sharing
Thank You!
Hey a question do yours totally rearrange your gravel, mine move the gravel so much I see the glass bottom of the aquarium
At this point mine wasn't dominate so it didn't...but a few months later when I moved him to his own tank all the gravel was pushed to one side of the tank and when I tried to flatten it back he attacked me!

It may work, mine was mainly aggressive towards fish that threaten, so it left smaller cichlids and non cichlids alone

Thank you, so far I'm loving this fish! It turned out being a female, so I'm expecting a max size of maybe 14 inches!
Beast
Thank you!
Mine is 13” and I feed him worms, maggots, moths and other insects. He loves its growing by the day!
Hi Darius.. I really enjoy each episode of Amazing Fish.. you certainly have any fish I could ever want. This fellow is stunning.
Thank you!
Stunning 👍
Thank You!

Thank You, I have some midas fry from my last pair and 3 salvini cichlids...looking to get a pair from them.
Awesome DWS, I'll stay tuned to see if you do.
My buttikoferi is not this aggressive and he is already 9 inches . I just recently got them as a pair
Very nice fish bro, He is a beast thats for sure, thumbs up
Thank You!
My big zebra talapia is fighting with small ones, can you suggest me how to stop aggression?🙏🙏
Im getting a 9inch one, what size tank is ok if its the only fish in there? I have a 450L
awesome vid!! i love my butta!!
Thank You!
BichirGuy 1990 I love my butter!
Buy them small like the man said i got 2 and they will put a devil, jag or even festae, in there place Real Quick FYI (Great vid Bro)
Thanks, so true
What do you suggest I put in their tank? Plants, rocks, gravels, sand? What type of habitat they prefer?
i bought the exact looking fish like this months ago, idk if it was the species cus the seller didn't even know what kind of fish it was 😂 but it sure do looks like this but in smaller size like 10/8 cm each, i bought them cus i love their stripes even tho i knew nothing about the species, i put them in the pond tho and there are like 6 of them, they always group together
I have one. It is fast growing & very aggressive. It has killed 2 of my Green Terrors & constantly attacks my Oscar.
i want this one bad, but already too many aggressive fish 😩😭 also yours is amazing!!
Lol...they are awesome...but mean! Thanks for watching!
Delgado JEEEEZ! Your a baddie! 😍🔥
To keep what will be the size of the aquarium
Hmm, I'm wondering if the pit bull of the American Cichlids (Mayan Cichlid) would be bold enough to establish full dominance over a Butterkoferi.

Yes that would be interesting...but I think size will have the greatest say...and a adult male butterkoferi can get 16 inches!
That's real
what do u feed her.. to make her grow so fast
She eats hikari massivore delight, that pellet food is very high in protein
This fish has surprisingly small eyes for a cichlid
Wow I'm just noticing that, that explains why she can never find the food right away when I feed her
Are they territorial like Flowerhorn
What are their colours available
my festae has just started picking fish off and he's only 3 inches he's killed a
4 inch male green terror
5 inch male white spotted pike cichlid
4 inch female atromaculatum cichlid
and last night a 4 inch male maybe cichlid who was bullying him last time I checked but I guess the festae will be a beast when he's older
LJS omg thats crazy im sorry bro
That really sucks bud, You might have to house him alone. Some of these SA & CA Cichlids don't play well with others. lol yeah big mean cichlids can be unpredictable jerks sometimes, always good to have a backup plan.
Wow, only 4 inches...sounds like you have a monster! How's the colors...usually the more aggressive ones shows a lot of color
All butters arent aggresive....my fish just as cool and docile and chills with all 19 of my other fish which are all Africans
heybi seen this guy at my lfs can he go in the aquarium with a Oscar i love that guy too
i know you just said solo but a Oscar could hold his own.
Deon 0026 an Oscars would be killed by a butti they r one of the meanest fish
LJS lol good looking out!
LJS hey can you sub my channel and share tips or whatever on my vids
Deon 0026 ok
WOW! WHAT A BEAUTY. I HAD ONE FOR 7 YEARS, BUT HE DIDNT SURVIVE MY MOVE. I COULDNT FIND ANOTHER AFTER THAT, SO NOW I HAVE A FLOWERHORN, WHO GREW S U P E R FAST!
Im confused which is right buttikoferi or butterkoferi?
buttikoferi
My mistake was getting 4 n the bigger one kill the other s. Nice fish but very aggressive n stressfaul fo me
Yes I ended up keeping mine by itself
Are they omnivorous or carnivorous can I feed them guppies will it eat it
Naturally they are omnivorous...mine would never eat live fish
Wonder if a butterkoferi can live with an aro(jars asians)
Possibly as they grow, but I think an Adult Asian Aro would kill a butti
What food do they prefer?
Mine ate hikari massivore delight as a staple
They are mean. But i had mine with red devil, jaguar, demsey.
Sadly i got 3 of this in my 55 gallon with other cichlids. I got them for like 1$ for 5. I thought they where peaceful because they dont fight others.
Exact Opposite, they are monsters....but that price, who could pass that up!
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS now ive been thinking if i can keep them all if i build a pond. I hope it'll work
มีขายมั้ย?
Can you eat them when they get bigger?
No, the chemicals that I use to sustain him in a fish tank are not safe for human consumption
@rubber triangle No, I am asking you a serious question. We have a huge tank that we stock fish in, when they get big enough, we eat them. Hence my question: Can you eat them when they get bigger? I am not afraid to eat them if they taste good.
The correct name of this fish is Heterotilapia Buttikoferi.
What is the life span of this fish
I've had mine now for over 13+ years. Love like family
Beautiful and Great video dear friend, Like and my sub 3,790.
Thank you! I'm subbed to you already!
please get rid of the air pump sound :P
That's the sound of the fishroom...for the first few weeks I was very annoyed but now I barely notice it!
just record a voice over instead of live :P
really nice tank man.. I'll sub.. if u get a chance check out my channel thanks
They are nasty.
At times, yes...mine is calm no but she becomes very moody randomly
