Dr. Mario (NES) Playthrough

- A playthough of Nintendo's 1990 puzzle game for the NES, Dr. Mario.
In this video, I play through the game on high speed for the best ending. The game begins at 2:10, and at 1:07:08, you can find a compilation of the cutscenes and endings that are shown when you play on the low and medium speeds.
Though he made a cameo appearance in the 1989 Game Boy version of Tetris, it was the fall 1990 release of Dr. Mario that gave Mario his first starring role in a puzzle game.
Dr. Mario was a huge deal when it came out. The vast sums Nintendo poured into its marketing campaign turned it into a pop culture phenomenon (remember the witch doctor commercial?), and any game starring Mario was guaranteed to be a best-seller. Looking back, it's strange remembering how there was once a time when puzzle games could become rockstars, but numbers don't lie: between the NES and the Game Boy, Dr. Mario sold over ten million copies worldwide.
The game keeps things simple - it is essentially a mash-up of Tetris and Connect Four with a slick bit of theming - but like the best puzzlers, there is a fair amount of depth to Dr. Mario's gameplay. It follows the same design ethos that Tetris did: it's simple to pick up, impossible to master, and entirely addictive, regardless of your skill level.
I love the little cinematic scenes that play after every fifth level (but are these guys really viruses? They're more like aliens...), and especially for a puzzle game, the graphics are great. The pieces are all clear and easily identified at a glance, and the dancing of the viruses and Dr. Mario brings a lot of life to the presentation.
The music is also classic. It speaks volumes to its quality that Nintendo is still remixing and recycling these tracks in modern releases. You can't go wrong with either of the in-game choices, "Fever" or "Chill," and that lengthy title theme makes me think of catchy pop songs from the 50s or 60s. Of course, with a [h]ip composer like Tanaka (Metroid, Kid Icarus, Super Mario Land, Mother, et al) at the helm, you would expect greatness, and he totally delivered.
Dr. Mario is awesome. It's a game that represents everything people loved about NES-era Nintendo, and the gameplay is timeless.

Oo ee, oo ah ah, ting-tang, walla-wall, bing-bang
I remember that commercial quite well.
Hahahahaha, I love it.
Good quote!!! 😂
Ah, Dr. Mario. What hasn’t been said about this instant classic over the years? I can recall the 2P battles against my brother, scrambling to see who can come out on top. Such good times. Everything about this gem still stands the test of time. 😌
You are a machine to be playing AND BEATING all NES games. Should be a Guinness world book record title since you have all the videos to prove it
Are you familiar with TheMexicanRunner? He did this a decade ago.
@@willbloodworth5248 I’ll have to check him out
one of my favorite puzzle games of all time, and who would have thought that those viruses were from another world LOL, the soundtrack and ending are very nice
This was my favorite NES classic.
One of my favorite games 🤩
Thanks!
Holy 😲 I forgot a lot of these games thanks for unlocking so many memories with your channel. Awesome 😎
God that NES era was magical.
I think all gaming consoles classics were magical from the 1980s to early 2000s!
An all time classic puzzler. I always pick "Chill" for the BGM.
Dr. Mario is a timeless classic. I just can’t decide if I like the NES, Game Boy, or Dr. Mario & Tetris SNES version the most. The N64 game is awesome too.
I like playing Dr. Mario NES game and Dr. Mario 64
@@AprilTeniente-eu1mj Nice! Those are both great games. Dr. Mario 64 is extremely fun. I really want the Tetris & Dr. Mario combo cartridge for the SNES. I rented it a few times in the 90’s and it was a great version.
Wish Nintendo made a Mario Woods N64 that the SNES wario woods was good!
Oh, my! One of my favourites.
nice gameplay!
I remember playing this game when I was a kid :')
Simple little puzzle game and yet it can be a heck of a challenge.
One time I got Level 20 on High. ONE TIME. It's really that hard and you got to be that lucky to get the caps you need.
My mom's mother really likes this game
I had this game as one of the NES CLASSIC games for my Game Boy Advance back in the late 2000's 😺👍🕹️.
I have played it a lot everyday 😺👍🕹️.
Until, i sold my Game Boy Advance + games in 2011 😹.
Every time I think of Dr. Mario I think of Andy Eddy's silly editorial about this game making fun of doctors and drugs. He was thinking outside the box.
Dr. Mario is one of my favorite NES games period.
The two Dr Mario's I ever liked and played was this Doctor Mario NES 1990, and Doctor Mario N64 2001!
Wish Dr Mario SNES had a special ending to it snd some other cutscenes in!
Classic puzzler, this.
GREAT GAME 🎮🕹🎮
This game was so good
@@Jason_Bover9000 YEP IT IS
I really always like Dr Mario NES and Dr Mario N64 other than Dr Mario SNES which was very interesting good soundtrack but for both games Dr Mario and Tetris, no special cutscenes or any endings!

Most people think Super Smash Bros when they hear Dr. Mario, and not from this or the Game Boy version.
There can't be that many people that main Dr Mario.

А теперь представьте эту игру на черно-белом телевизоре.
Мне повезло, в телевизор, доставшийся нам от знакомой, был вмонтирован PAL-SECAM декодер и приставка показывала в цвете :)
