- This video example is property of Dr. Megan Miller. For more information about the 7 Steps of instructional control or alternatives to traditional escape extinction, check out our webinar on Traditional Escape Extinction: Ethical Considerations and a Review of Alternatives at www.dobetterpod.com
In this video, the instructor follows traditional escape extinction methods and forces Malerie to follow the demand. Note how the instructor removes all of the fun toys and then physically guides Malerie back to the teaching setting. She has to be forceful with Malerie and Malerie only touches the car because the instructor is winning the battle. Additionally, Malerie seems to be enjoying the physical interaction and the instructor’s response to the escape behavior is likely serving to reinforce escape behaviors.
This situation can be avoided by:
1. Implementing the 7 steps of instructional control
2. Blocking access to reinforcers
3. Waiting for Malerie to choose to re-join the learning setting instead of forcing her to re-join
4. Conducting a functional assessment to determine the maintaining variables and teaching Malerie appropriate replacement behaviors. *See our FCT webinar for more information about teaching replacement behaviors.
