@@WormHunter It may be too early to say this but I think Battles may be one of the best additions to Magic in awhile. @@Nicksizzle77 yeah it looks fun in all until you get run over by aggro before you can do all the cool stuff like usual when there's cool mechanics like this
I found her to be a bit slow in decks that want to remove counters. And many decks have a response to her, be it removal, stalling her out or just pumping out little guys to chump her so she never gets anything done. She works great in theory, but in practice, she doesn't work out as well.
Dies to removal is a meme but its also just the truth. You spend 3 mana on Glissa, I spend 2 mana on Abrade/Go For the Throat/Make Disappear so you fall behind while Glissa does nothing.
Wow. That first game really impressed me, I had no idea Battles could have so much interactions with each other. I'd love to see if this deck can make it to mythic
Nice deck! I was curious how the battles were going to play out. In my uneducated opinion, the battles are only going to be competetive if there are good shenanigans that make cards flip.
12:18 Makes a play like the ones you only see in frickin YuGiOh, where the spam the field full of cards. Reaction with the most dead pan voice possible: "well, that was awesome" like his favorite tea kettle brewed a really good tea that day
Sige is a really interesting mechanic. I always love value cards that works better for midrange or aggro, than for control (Cause tbh, the value control tends to get is very boring... Just boardwipes, draw, life and then some wincon)
I do think it's worth noting that, judging by his discards, your opponent in match 3 topdecked nothing but lands during the latter half of the match. Still think the Render Inert/Cemetery Desecrator deck likely outvalues its RW cousin in the late game, but it may have had a better showing had Salseo practiced his topdecking skills a little more
What were your thoughts on the BR edict battle? I thought that would be an auto-include. Also thought that the haste dino that hits battles when he hits players would be in the deck. Did you try these and they just didnt work?
Could play one edict to search up, but the transformed side is quite mediocre, so at that point you can play a better removal spell like Sheoldreds Edict. The Dino was a consideration, just don’t think it’s connecting very reliably.
Ive tried playing this deck in standard and it seems a little too slow to be competitive: I seem to end up with lots on battles on the board but cannot activate them in time to make a difference.......maybe I'm playing it wrong?
Great video as always! LVD what’s your opinion on using battles without ways to remove the counters? Seems like you can waste a lot of damage attacking them rather than the opponent just for the creature to get removed.
Did you consider adding All Will Be One to this deck? I'm testing out a Gruul list with AWBO, as each battle enters with x defense counters on it and so your 2-drop battles are going to burn something for 4-6 in addition to their normal effects. That strikes me as stupid if you can get it out (I think Storm the Festival is a good option there). Here's my test list: Deck 4 All Will Be One 4 Armored Scrapgorger 1 Boseiju, Who Endures 4 Fable of the Mirror-Breaker 8 Forest 4 Invasion of Ergamon 2 Invasion of Ikoria 4 Invasion of Ixalan 3 Invasion of Karsus 1 Invasion of Shandalar 1 Kogla and Yidaro 2 Migloz, Maze Crusher 8 Mountain 4 Rampaging Raptor 2 Riveteers Overlook 4 Rockfall Vale 1 Sokenzan, Crucible of Defiance 3 Storm the Festival Sideboard 1 Brotherhood's End 1 Conduit of Worlds
@@LegenVD I get that, and only really plan on flipping battles with the Rampaging Raptors. My goal is to drop AWBO, and then burning the opponent down with Invasion of Ergamon (RG: deal 5 to face, loot, create treasure), Ixilan (1G: deal 4 to face, fetch a permanent from the top 5), Invasion of Ikoria (XGG: deal 6 to face, then fetch and play a creature -- the creature I prefer here is Migloz, which means that I pay 3GG to deal 11 damage to an opponent's face and get a Migloz into play). If you can stick OWBO, the rest of the deck becomes stupid powerful, akin to getting a Chandra, Torch of Defiance emblem. Basically, the deck is enough ramp to get out an AWBO, and enough battles that draw to burn down the opponent in a turn or two. If the opponent is control and making life hard, Raptor is the backup plan to start flipping battles, but I hope that isn't the case in most matches.
I wasn't sure how to feel about Battles when they were revealed, but this video has really solidifed my feelings on them, and it takes comparing them to Planeswalkers. Planeswalkers always felt like a tug of war, like you're desperately trying to save yourself from a ticking time bomb. It's what makes PW control decks so infuriating or groan inducing to play against, since the more the number goes up, the farther away victory is. Battles on the other hand are fun to destroy, even if it means you're not chunking down your opponent with attacks or burn. It's a long term investment that pays off and that makes it feel much better than trying to keep PWs in check.
My only single gripe about battles is this: in a planewalker vs planewalker fight, what happens when one of them casts a battle? What is happening exactly? All the other types do not have this problem.
Would someone please explain to me the wording of Invasion of Tarkir? It says X can't be 0 and yet people are able to cast it without revealing anything; isn't X '0' this way? The reveal isn't a 'you may' ability, which would mean X HAS to be 0 if you don't have any dragons in hand. Obviously I'm wrong, but I can't see how.
Two thunder maws would actually proc 4 times for 8 damage. Each dragon saying "whenever a dragon attack deal 2 damage to any target" meaning you'll get two procs on each dragon. Untapping would mean wiping their board.
Good question. Farewell specifically said the supertype of the permanent, and battles are not included in there. I imagine it will be the same as Planeswalker; totally untouched.

Definitely the catch with playing them, knowing when to generate value or pressure someones life total. Doing the math he def would have won if he just went face after getting flamewright.
I don't think opponent would have had enough gas to win if he just went face. Without lightshield array to protect the playwright, the desecrator would have immediately stabilised the board. There'd be a bunch of battles left over, but no board presence to actually get any value out of them.
