  • Time goes by SO fast! (also apologies for the grainy noise in the background - my fan was on bc it was BOILING in my room!)
    Here's a 6 month dance progress video to a hip-hop routine I learnt in Oct 2019 (my first ever Beginner's Hip Hop class at Sydney Dance Company) until now (April 2020 during lockdown and self isolation lol). I'm still VERY beginner and have so much more to learn and improve, but I hope this video somewhat inspires you to getchyo' hip hop onnn!
    If you want to skip the chatter at the beginning, the 'before' dance begins at 1:22 & the 'after' video begins at 2:13.

    I need some words of encouragement. I used to love to dance. There are videos of me just dancing as early as 7 years old. Never formally trained tho. And I think because I was dancing so much...just at parties and for fun at home, I definitely have rhythm. As I got older I completely stopped. Now I'm 37 and I've been dying to go take a dance class but I'm so scared that I can't keep up or make a fool of myself and completely hate dancing for good. What was your first dance class like? How was the teacher? What made you feel comfortable?

    • @itsmissvi
      @itsmissvi  4 роки тому +2

      Latifa JM Hey girl!!! Awwww thank you. You’re absolutely right, I don’t think anyone really is a bad dancer. I think all it really is is identifying what areas of improvement one dancer has. Because everyone has a some sense of rhythm. I used to put myself down quite a lot, and call myself ‘bad’ but if I continued with that mentality I was never going to improve, or ever feel better about my ability. But in the first video, there was obviously so much room for improvement. I could never retain choreography and my grooves were waaaaayyy off, but I could dance! I was just an absolute beginner. I hope the video somewhat helped you! ♥️😘

      It doesn’t matter whether you do or don’t know how to dance - as a matter of fact, everyone can dance! It’s just learning technique and style which is what you see in dance videos everywhere.
      And it’s really up to you what kind of dance style you want to learn in class. You don’t need to know anything prior. If you’re an absolute beginner, I encourage you to take beginner/foundation classes of ANY style you like. You will most likely be in a class of people JUST LIKE YOU! Who have never properly danced before. You got this! 🤩

    • @itsmissvi
      @itsmissvi  3 роки тому

      Hi Sophia! Oh my goodness, I have SO many tips! You actually inspired me to make another video on this topic in particular. But for now, here are some tips without access to any dance classes!
      1) UA-cam!!! UA-cam is your BESTFRIEND! There will be definitely tutorials available on UA-cam for certain moves, grooves or actually routines you want to learn! If you want to actually learn a dance routine that you really like and there's no tutorial, I would suggest trying to slow down the original video at perhaps -50% and then slowly working your way to normal speed and learning the dance. It won't be mirrored, so you'll have to download a mirroring plug-in on your browser! This is actually how a lot of people learn music video routines etc :)
      2) STEEZY! Check these guys out. They will release free tutorials every now and then that you can learn online! I use these guys quite regularly - and it's awesome because they come straight from the US and are pioneers at what they do!
      3) INSTAGRAM! Regularly check any choreographers/dancers Instagram pages for free tutorials. Sometimes you'll find that your favourite choreographer and/or professional dancer has released an IGTV of their dance choreography! (Eg. Sean Bankhead has a saved IGTV from he went live with his ''Wild Side'' choreography by Normani ft. Cardi B. This is AWESOME because we rarely ever get these type of tutorials) You'll also find that dancers all over the world, depending on their COVID situation, release online tutorials (usually $10-$15 which is WAY cheaper than an average dance class) of moves and grooves training and/or dance choreography tutorials.
      Hope this helps!!! Stay tuned for my upcoming video, I'll go more in depth with the above!
      Let me know if you have any other questions, happy to answer them for you :)

      Wow, I really inspired you? That's amazing!!!! This means so much to me!!! Definitely do it!
      I'm no big UA-camr, but my suggestion is to find something different. Find what other UA-cam videos are missing or 'lacking' and make videos on that! Before I made this video, I definitely felt there was no 'comedic' personality on someone who's a beginner dancer. It was all too serious. So I wanted to create this channel to make the conversation of starting dance a little lighter, so that people won't be afraid to start. And it's OKAY to not be the best at the beginning!
      ALSO! BE YOURSELF! Make videos on what you're passionate about. It will shine through your content.

    You're so inspiring! I'm just starting out so I look awkward hehe
    Can I ask you how many classes were you taking weekly? How do you organise your dance practise? Like do you prefer do clean a dance routine as much as you can even if that may a week for example or do you prefer to learn different things?

      Omg thank you so much. Hahaha it’s okay! It all takes time, but try and always be confident in your movement 🥰
      During COVID (when I made this video), I wasn’t taking any physical classes. I would take live online classes around 3-4 times a week (choreography/dance routine based) and I would take Steezy foundation classes for grooves. I would organise dance ‘homework’ (not online live classes) for around 2 hours almost everyday. And dance home work could be to really clean a dance routine or learn new moves and grooves of different styles etc.
      And depends! If I really like a routine, I’ll practise and clean as much as I can so I can film it nicely. But I do love to learn different styles to expand your dance vocabulary. The best dancers are those that are versatile and CAN do different styles, rather than sticking just to Hip Hop.
      Nowadays, I’ve been taking between 7-10 classes a week in so many different styles (absolute beginner ballet, jazz, dancehall etc). While I love Hip Hop, I know training in different styles will help me improve my technique!
      Hope this helps Marina!

    thanks for posting this! I've always been self conscious of really putting myself out there, but I really want to push myself and learn to hip hop dance. Are there any tips to improve on things like getting looser, mobility, and coordination that helped you? I've been a lifter all of my life so my body is always so stiff which I'm sure is not ideal

    • @itsmissvi
      @itsmissvi  3 роки тому

      Hey man! Yoga will definitely help you with getting looser and strengthening your mobility. UA-cam some yoga videos to help you in this (strength, flexibility etc.) and 30 minutes a day should help you become more flexible, looser, mobile etc! In terms of coordination, I definitely recommend taking as much dance tutorials/classes as you can. Challenge yourself learning new choreography every 2-3 days. A beginner routine! And if you feel like you want to keep practising a certain routine, do it! That still helps your coordination. There are also heaps of foot/body coordination videos on UA-cam, those will help you heaps. But in my experience, just learning routines over the span of 2-3 months helped my coordination so much.

    What do they teach in dance classes?

    • @itsmissvi
      @itsmissvi  4 роки тому +2

      sunil ks Depends on the studio and what classes you take! From my knowledge, if you come across a ‘Hip Hop Class’, they will most likely teach you a Hip Hop Routine. Sometimes they’ll teach you grooves and moves as it’s own lesson (eg. an hour of doing moves as opposed to a whole routine), but for the most part, they will teach you a 30-60s choreography. It also depends on the teacher too. Everyone has their own teaching style.
