    These videos have been a real treat, and represent a riveting body of work in the oral history of flying the F-15 and its use during the Cold War.

    Steve, I am the one who asked about the real high altitude/high Mach performance of the Eagle. Answer: Mach 2.25 with 8 missiles and a centerline. WHOA! Puts every other data point - be it manuals or pilot accounts - in the right perspective. Pilot accounts are now all very believable. Thank you so very much. This is important for me as my father flew the CF-5, CF-104, and the F-4 but never talked about his flying. I felt denied and for what purpose... I'll never know. This created an undying curiosity for fighter pilot stories and accounts. I therefore search for information found in this podcast and your other podcasts, to fill in this hole or information void. Father has long since passed and I understand a little bit more, details of his professional life, through others, and it brings satisfaction and closure at the same time. I very much appreciate you asking this question and thank you again for asking it and, for the podcasts in general. Cheers from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

    Great episode again with Disco; and thanks Steve for correctly pronouncing the Flanker as the "Su-27" and not the SU-27.

    In a very recent Fighter Pilot Podcast video, col. Robert "Jungle" Jones was passing the performance of the F-14D IRST system, along the AN/APG-71 radar.

    I am nodding my head in fierce agreement (and a big smile) at Disco spelling out so clearly what those of us in USAFE thought of Tactical Air Command. (We had a snide way of referring to their habit of useless inspections of paperwork etc as "looking good in the shower contests". Nuff said...

    God, those tactical call sign stories from Disco had me laughing. Squadron banter can be hilarious. We managed to retain some of that in our HQ office at Eglin, because: a) once a fighter pilot, always a fighter pilot and b) we were too rebellious and didn't give a shit if we got told off now and again and c) our boss was a legendary fighter pilot anyway, so it was tolerated (in an unspoken way).

    Another top-notch interview, Steve @10percenttrue - thank you and Disco. Your discussion of Bear, Bison and Badger bombers makes me wonder if Disco and/or his squadron mates ever encountered any Backfires. They were certainly reputed to be quite a step up in capability.

    Love the banter about call signs, that often seems like a taboo subject for some reason

    The F-14 IRST was better than its radar? Wow, them's fightin' words, surely? 😎

    Very good interview, thank you both. His views on IRST are down right wrong IMO. In a peer to peer conflict where a radar will either be jammed or give away your location a passive sensor is a no brainer IMO. Disclaimer- I'm not a pilot, just some guy on the internet.

    In light of the AIM-54 performance in the Iran -Iraq war, why is its reputation so bad among American fighter pilots? Wasn't it a better weapon than the AIM-7 variants the F-15s carried?

    • @10percenttrue
      @10percenttrue  8 місяців тому +1

      Serious question: what performance are you referencing? I am far from well-read on that conflict, but I understand there is no proof of any AIM-54 kills by the IIRAF, and that the three confirmed IIRAF Tomcat kills all involved the AIM-9. Do you have a different understanding?

    • @knightonwarbeck1969
      @knightonwarbeck1969 8 місяців тому

      @@10percenttrue Hello Steve. The AIM-54 was HIGHLY EFFECTIVE in the Iran-Iraq war. To bring yourself up to speed in 2-3 sittings, the following book will change your views: Iranian F-14 Tomcat Units in Combat (Combat Aircraft) Paperback - September 23, 2004. If I may share some Tomcat performance to coincide with Disco's Mach 2.25, 8 missile and one centerline tank story, one Tomcat pilot accelerated to Mach 2.2 with 2 AIM-7s, 2 AIM-9s and 2 AIM-54s... no tanks. I am of course reading between the lines here concerning the loadout but, this loadout is consistent with the typical loadout of the Tomcat throughout the war. I am sure you know of Tom Cooper or have you? He is a writer but more importantly, he is an investigator. The IIRAF Tomcat Pilots will emphatically disagree with all USAF/NAVY pilots on the subject of AIM-54 effectiveness. Quite a few FOXBATS were downed by the Phoenix even when launched at very low altitude. I must warn you now... any mention of this in a podcast will see an overwhelming surge of support from the Tomcat community. Expect a broad and voluminous gifting of smoked and cured meats, fine chocolates, and well crafted European beers. Heck... you might even get flowers.
