By 1950's the Railways of Britain were very special, a lot more than many imagine. They were our very link with the past generations, symbols of work, inventiveness and ease of mass transportation. Many didn't value them that much when they had them but they sure miss them now.
The two Wolverhampton stations were built by rival railway companies and by the time network had been nationalised and traffic levels had fallen - there was little business case in keeping both open. Being nostalgic and not being able to accept change is not a reason to to keep the 2 lines open. At Wolverhampton low level has been preserved and the route is a tramway.
I suppose we should be grateful that none of the line formation was built upon in the intervening years. I remember photographing Bilston Central station about the same time as in this video trying to imagine Kings and Castles thundering through. At least we have a tramway in its place now but I know what I'd much prefer.......
Truly fascinating historical document of urban decay and rebirth, Policy makers sadly never look far enough ahead and the rebuilding is immensely costly. And the trams today are a miserable substitute for the locos of the old GWR line.
a year before the algorithm feeds me the video! Rather haunting but very enjoyable. There may be some AI software available that can clean up the original footage, erase those damaged tape sections and smooth it out perhaps. That Bus on the track was really....weird!
Great video, just been looking at the new Snow Hill station, has this whole line been rebuilt through all the stations in your video, or only some sections...?
It's brilliant that it's been rebuilt since, but incredibly wasteful in comparison to leaving it open in the first place. A larger snow hill station is needed but can't happen now, hence the expansion of Moor st.

The wanton destruction of the old GWR

Beeching should have served time for this.
He wrote a report - didn’t close any lines or stations.

I believe the lock at 8.56 is the last lock on the bradley flight of locks.
Can anyone explain the random Daimler Fleetine waiting at the platform?!
Gaaah I DID know but now not so sure, the numbers 3803 and 3827 ring a bell but so long ago! (Ex WMPTE/Birmingham City Transport)
Its on the tracks very strange .
Can anyone identify the derelict canal lock at 8mins54s ?
