My favorite aspect of the Followers of Set is their specific type of 'evil' or 'corrupting influence', people look at them praying on other's weaknesses while they look at everyone else wondering why they are so weak. To be fair, Ur-Shulgi has not (!) joined the Sabbat in V5, many of the Sabbat Banu Haqim have joined him instead, because his way was obviously compelling to them. The only other Ur-Shulgi Sabbat connection is, that the Sabbat attacked Alamut and it was speculated that they indeed killed Ur-Shulgi. The Gehenna War sourcebook confirmed, though, that Old Shulgi and his followers could actually escape and now hide at an unknown place.
Honestly so glad you put Caitiff where they belong. I feel that any character concept that would be fun with Caitiff would be better served by being a Thinblood. Is that because the Thinbloods are my favorite? Is it because their baggage is super interesting to me? Yes. We don't need a designated "outcast" clan when the Brujah exist, the Thinbloods exist, and ya know, outcasts from other Clans exist.
My favorite Gangrel I played was a Greek Gangrel that that was a posh British Sniper bitten in World War 2 that went on to be a sheriff for a Camarilla prince in New Orleans. My second favorite was a celopatra Nosferatu that hated living in the sewers and preferred high rise buildings.
The spirit of the Giovanni has possessed with every Giovanni player I have ever seen play. Their concept is so powerful that every such Giovanni has been able to portray them without issue.
I 100% agree with the Caitiff as discharge for exactly the same reasons. Plus as a storyteller I’ve seen too many players falling into the category of picking their favorite disciplines but not wanting any of the extra weight that goes with any clan or any banes
I’ve always liked the Giovanni Clan a lot. They are my favorite of the independent Clans. Despite that, I’ve always thought that their flavor would be more appropriate for a Bloodline (or maybe just a faction) of the Cappadocian Clan. So basically the Hecata, but they were the Hecata all along.
To be fair, the distinction between clan and bloodline is often the political function. Theoretically speaking, Tremere could be considered a bloodline of Tzimisce. ;)
I pretty much agree with your rankings, although the Brujah is a bit spicy. You really sold me on the Giovanni! I also really like the Hecata, it was a great idea to merge all these bloodlines into one clan. Looking forward to see who is Antediluvian and where you'll rank my favorite clan the Tzimisce.
my argument for caitiff is that you only talked about the abandoned sort and not the made sort. i love a good botched embrace and i think caitiff are more interesting than thinbloods, especially in v5, because you don’t have the same level of main character syndrome that is easy to fall into with a thinblood. the lore is less developed, but i see that as a strength because i don’t like the thinblood lore 😅
Loved the video it was just like 10 years ago being back at university watching your videos and thoroughly enjoying every moment. I also found myself agreeing with much of your rankings but you must have been drinking Malk blood to rank Giovanni above Cappadocian XD. One thing I would like to add to the followers of Sets credit is that they always provided a counter to the Assamite so middle eastern vampires were not so one note. Also I'll never understand why V5 had the Gangrel leave the Camarilla rather than the obvious choice of the Brujah. I'd move Brujah down to fledgling as they always just boil down to the "I punch things" clan. Also great work with the Hecata! You're making me want to run a whole new V20 campaign again XD
Ouch, Mr Dawkins writes a whole book about a gangrel discovering most of the metaplot and then says the Gangrel aren't involved with it (didn't Xavier basically start the Gehenna storyline by pulling the clan out of the Camarilla?)
My top 3 clans have long been cappadoccian, tzimisce, and nosferatu, in no particular order. A lot of it is because of their lore. I adore the nosferatu "close ranks" mentality regardless of Camarilla/Sabbat/Anarch allegiance in response to threats, the Tzimisce's Sacred Hospitality, and the Cappadoccian delving into the secrets of life, death, and undeath. It will be interesting to see where the later two fall. As for the Giovanni... I despise their "incestuous vampire mafia" lore, and I dislike the Hecata for being Giovanni in all but name. Though I do like their bane/curse of the painful bite.

Gangrel at elder tier, nice. Putting a clan that can turn into a bats, wolves, or mist a tier lower would have been criminal. Really curious to see where you rank the other two animalism clans, well the animalism clans that matter anyway, since the third might as well be a bloodline lol.
I've had a rather dim view of V5 because I'm perhaps a bit too much of purist... but the other day while I was upgrading my Curseborne backing pledge (to a physical copy plus dice) and putting some other pledges in order, I noticed an advert telling me the entirety of 5ed was on Humble Bundle for next to nothing (if you're US/Can/Aus/NZ it's an even better deal, because four items are only available as physical copies in those regions). I decided to give it a fair go. If I could enjoy Kindred: the Embraced for what it was (adjacent-fanfic by someone who really loved the Highlander TV show), surely I can tolerate V5 (in particular, V:tM was always my game, and the one I technically contributed to in the V20 core book. I will be reading the whole 5ed collection, though.). Blimey I use a lot of brackets! 🤦🤣
Some shocking surprises in this one! Also I have to say I prefer the version of the Hecata symbol you use in this tier list over the one that seems to have supplanted it somewhere along the way.
I like playing against type, but not so much that you lose the flavor of the clan. Gangrel are great for that. I like playing them as sophisticated predators with fairly high social stats
My feeling on the Giovanni, and yes even the Cappadocians even though I prefer them, fall into what I call the Bloodline Problem. They’re so hyper focused conceptually that they don’t make sense as a Clan which to me needs to be broad enough to make sense in most any setting even if you’re the only one. So I think both the Giovanni and Cappadocians were made better by the Hecata. So I think Hecata did so much good for them that I put them at Antediluvian
Brujah being among the ruling Clans of the Sabbat fits their lore way better than being subordinate to their arch-enemies within the Camarilla. The only Clan that forgets their offspring is Gangrel. The Sabbat has its shovelheads. As you said, the Clans with a Curse or are linked to one region should pay attention to their offspring. The only way the Caitif works among those Clans is If your sire dies & there's no structure to guide the Fledgeling. Malks should have this sort of babysitting structure. Gangs would have worked great with the metaplot had they always been Anarchs or fully independent. They don't care. They have issues with the Tremere & the Tsimisce and have always gone their own way. The Camarilla is almost a Cosa Nostra, & Giovanni is the only Clan that is nonchalant about it.
I definitely turned down the intensity on the corruptor identity for the Setites, but keep elements of it via the "make you free" aesthetic, and I took the Clan of Faith idea from your video. Poor Brujah 😂. I've always enjoyed them as foil to the Ventrue within the Camarilla. We recently met the Hecata in our game. We'll see where that leads. I agree and disagree about the Gangrel. It seems like there's very little going on in Modern Nights specific to the clan, but in the setting history you have them tied into Norse myth, Mongolian Khan wars, and my favorite God-King, Gilgamesh! I dont know how to bring any of their history into modern day that isn't to ... anime-ish, but I want to.
Ur shulgi has not joined the sabbat. He is still an independent entity with a blood cult derived from remaining traditionists and the recruitment of younger kindred. Sheperds of Ur-Shulgi

@TheGentlemanGamer from what I've read, and I did an entire review of the Gehenna War Book on my UA-cam so i had to read the whole thing lol, there didn't seem to be anything alluding to him joining the sabbat. He/it is definitely manipulating things in the Gehenna War proper, and his blood cult, the shepards, are in the book as a gehenna war faction. I think what people might be getting confused is that there are a ton of new factions that were introduced in the Gehenna War book that deal with the war specifically but have allegiances spanning all over from the camarilla, sabbat, circulation system to independent. Goratrix is confirmed in the book as being a potential manipulator of one of the Gehenna factions from behind the scenes that are aligned with the sabbat known as Moons Army...... Who's partly led by a salubri prophet.....
I’m working on a PowerPoint to introduce my friends to the clans and I’m using famous vampires from movie and tv. Salubri are the only ones I couldn’t come up with an example of in pop culture

I more or less agree with this - Hecata as a whole I agree are Methuselah. But I believe Gangrel are also. I don't consider Giovanni anymore of a clan than the Tremere (guess where they rank with me lol). It's the cappadocians that make the Hecata. This is series of videos is entertaining
I absolutely agree with everything you said about the Hecata. I never understood why people who allegedly care about the game and its metaplot cannot wrap their heads around the family reunion except if they never actually red it... For me Clan Giovanni was always, to my delight, "Clan Addams Family", and now, with the family reunion, just all the weird uncles and aunts (and some more distant cousins) came to the table.
You forgot an appealing aspect of the Gangrel: They appeal to players who really wanted to play Werewolf The Apocalypse, but whose local groups only play VtM.
Have you ever tried presenting the Followers as true Howardian villains, complete with full Egyptian regalia, bane mummies and snake ghouls? I feel like it could work in a mummy or Silent Strider heavy game, but in vampire, not so sure.
As for assamite, i dont quite understand the name change, since atleast 2nd edition they have regionally been known as the banu haqim (Veil of night book etc) i always took 'Assamite' to be a european/english name for them, as as you dont use the middle eastern names for the other clans that are in veil of night while you are in europe - which you would do if you were in the middle east, calling them the banu haqim only cement them as a middle eastern clan in my eyes, but overall i largely agree, i think something should have done with their bloodthirst, its hard to be both the fair judges AND also cold blooded mercenary diableriests at the same time, i dont think that situation got sorted, so i would place them somewhere between Ancilla and Neonate Brujah, its my personal favorite clan, however, i think its been a bit too stagnant and especially with v5 actively removing most elders, it removed all the young versus old, rabble versus philospher-king, and frankly, the whole punk and rebel vibe they got going on, was great and fitting for the 90's but in 2020+ it just does not suit the world and the players as much anyone, i guess its time for another shift in their clan, honestly the clan that need the most to be done to them. Moving them from the camarilla to the anarch removed even more for them, now they are just straight up rebels, no unity, no goal, no vision, no one to even really fight, Discharge Cappadocian is N/A for me Caitiff i wish for one thing to be made clear; it need to be clearer that there are three types of Caitiff; The ones who have a clan and bloodline etc, but it is simply unknown which one it is, the ones that are so thin blood that the blood just didnt strike through enough to give them any defining features, and the ones that DOES have potent blood, but something weird is going on (Prince of cairo etc) until this is proper highlighted its fledling, currently there is just too much confusion going on about them Followers of set, my 2nd favorite clan, however the books are confusing, 'they want to spread corruption!' why? uh..... uhhhhh....? reading through every book the only place that gives an actual reason reason for why they want to spread corruption is cairo by night, a 5th gen elder is sleeping and is cursed, the more corrupt the city is, the more 'aware' he is, great for a local sect, incredibly poor reasoning for the entire clan to be corrupters, but they have so much going for it otherwise; they got the warrior, sorcerer and vizier approach of the assamites, they are the old lords of egypt, founder of civilisation, they got a antediluvian somewhere around, they are independent that want to spread their claws into each pie, and they are quite liberal when it comes to things like sex and drugs, and their religion, serpentis, is directly proving their faith, mechanically legit believing in set grants literal serpentis powers, and they are capable of adopting other clans into becoming a follower, there are so many interesting approaches and concepts with them, even more so (relative to other clans) if you play in a historical setting pre-victorian age, but alas, the fact they are written initially as villains/npc's and the whole 'they corrupt in order to corrupt for corruptions own sake' completely ruin them unless you wish to house rule some things away. They get methusalah AND neonate ranking at the same time Gangrel, there is not much to say, they are great! very fun and great loners, plus they work well with other splats like werewolf, they also work really well in city politics as a political counter balance or force you have to consider, but that is rarely a player itself, i got not much more to say, i would have wanted a bit more done on the independent and sabbat side of the gangrel, and i would have kept them in the camarilla mainly, they are also great for new players. Elder Giovanni, are very depending on your table, if you are a puritan player they are discharge, but if you shy away from very little they are Methuselah tier, they got an active antideluvian, they got a strong identiy, they are capable of showing up everywhere, they got some cool necromancy powers with unique personal enemies, they are rich and got the whole mafia and finance aspect, they got a interesting (if quite ew ew) internal family dynamic going, i like where they are, but its definately depending on your players, but if a table does not like them, one advantage is that they are incredibly easy to sideline, Elder Hecata, i dont like them, some clans should never be able to become friends, giovanni and literally anyone else is that, wet blanket discharge, and even if they could become friends, i think its infinitely more interesting to have the giovanni and capadocian separate

Because the designers thought it sounded cool and didn’t bother to do research what it actually meant? It is far from the only case in World of Darkness books. Just look how they had to retcon what Lancea Sanctum really meant in Requiem. Originally, it was supposed to be “Holy Spear”, a good example of people not having the faintest idea of Latin (which is not their fault), but not making the effort to research (which is definitely their fault).

Me too, I like the idea of botched Nosferatu embrace who is not ugly enough for the clan so they get thrown out as clanless.

You are confusing things here. Clan Gangrel left pre-V5, the Brujah than joined them in V5.

@TheGentlemanGamer from what I've read, and I did an entire review of the Gehenna War Book on my UA-cam so i had to read the whole thing lol, there didn't seem to be anything alluding to him joining the sabbat. He/it is definitely manipulating things in the Gehenna War proper, and his blood cult, the shepards, are in the book as a gehenna war faction. I think what people might be getting confused is that there are a ton of new factions that were introduced in the Gehenna War book that deal with the war specifically but have allegiances spanning all over from the camarilla, sabbat, circulation system to independent.
Goratrix is confirmed in the book as being a potential manipulator of one of the Gehenna factions from behind the scenes that are aligned with the sabbat known as Moons Army...... Who's partly led by a salubri prophet.....

I’m working on a PowerPoint to introduce my friends to the clans and I’m using famous vampires from movie and tv. Salubri are the only ones I couldn’t come up with an example of in pop culture

I more or less agree with this - Hecata as a whole I agree are Methuselah. But I believe Gangrel are also. I don't consider Giovanni anymore of a clan than the Tremere (guess where they rank with me lol). It's the cappadocians that make the Hecata. This is series of videos is entertaining
I absolutely agree with everything you said about the Hecata. I never understood why people who allegedly care about the game and its metaplot cannot wrap their heads around the family reunion except if they never actually red it... For me Clan Giovanni was always, to my delight, "Clan Addams Family", and now, with the family reunion, just all the weird uncles and aunts (and some more distant cousins) came to the table.
I adore this man's work, it's a shame he seems so over and disappointed by VtM. What happened, Gent?

You forgot an appealing aspect of the Gangrel: They appeal to players who really wanted to play Werewolf The Apocalypse, but whose local groups only play VtM.

Have you ever tried presenting the Followers as true Howardian villains, complete with full Egyptian regalia, bane mummies and snake ghouls? I feel like it could work in a mummy or Silent Strider heavy game, but in vampire, not so sure.

As for assamite, i dont quite understand the name change, since atleast 2nd edition they have regionally been known as the banu haqim (Veil of night book etc) i always took 'Assamite' to be a european/english name for them, as as you dont use the middle eastern names for the other clans that are in veil of night while you are in europe - which you would do if you were in the middle east, calling them the banu haqim only cement them as a middle eastern clan in my eyes, but overall i largely agree, i think something should have done with their bloodthirst, its hard to be both the fair judges AND also cold blooded mercenary diableriests at the same time, i dont think that situation got sorted, so i would place them somewhere between Ancilla and Neonate
Brujah, its my personal favorite clan, however, i think its been a bit too stagnant and especially with v5 actively removing most elders, it removed all the young versus old, rabble versus philospher-king, and frankly, the whole punk and rebel vibe they got going on, was great and fitting for the 90's but in 2020+ it just does not suit the world and the players as much anyone, i guess its time for another shift in their clan, honestly the clan that need the most to be done to them. Moving them from the camarilla to the anarch removed even more for them, now they are just straight up rebels, no unity, no goal, no vision, no one to even really fight, Discharge

Caitiff i wish for one thing to be made clear; it need to be clearer that there are three types of Caitiff; The ones who have a clan and bloodline etc, but it is simply unknown which one it is, the ones that are so thin blood that the blood just didnt strike through enough to give them any defining features, and the ones that DOES have potent blood, but something weird is going on (Prince of cairo etc) until this is proper highlighted its fledling, currently there is just too much confusion going on about them
Followers of set, my 2nd favorite clan, however the books are confusing, 'they want to spread corruption!' why? uh..... uhhhhh....? reading through every book the only place that gives an actual reason reason for why they want to spread corruption is cairo by night, a 5th gen elder is sleeping and is cursed, the more corrupt the city is, the more 'aware' he is, great for a local sect, incredibly poor reasoning for the entire clan to be corrupters, but they have so much going for it otherwise; they got the warrior, sorcerer and vizier approach of the assamites, they are the old lords of egypt, founder of civilisation, they got a antediluvian somewhere around, they are independent that want to spread their claws into each pie, and they are quite liberal when it comes to things like sex and drugs, and their religion, serpentis, is directly proving their faith, mechanically legit believing in set grants literal serpentis powers, and they are capable of adopting other clans into becoming a follower, there are so many interesting approaches and concepts with them, even more so (relative to other clans) if you play in a historical setting pre-victorian age, but alas, the fact they are written initially as villains/npc's and the whole 'they corrupt in order to corrupt for corruptions own sake' completely ruin them unless you wish to house rule some things away.

Gangrel, there is not much to say, they are great! very fun and great loners, plus they work well with other splats like werewolf, they also work really well in city politics as a political counter balance or force you have to consider, but that is rarely a player itself, i got not much more to say, i would have wanted a bit more done on the independent and sabbat side of the gangrel, and i would have kept them in the camarilla mainly, they are also great for new players. Giovanni, are very depending on your table, if you are a puritan player they are discharge, but if you shy away from very little they are Methuselah tier, they got an active antideluvian, they got a strong identiy, they are capable of showing up everywhere, they got some cool necromancy powers with unique personal enemies, they are rich and got the whole mafia and finance aspect, they got a interesting (if quite ew ew) internal family dynamic going, i like where they are, but its definately depending on your players, but if a table does not like them, one advantage is that they are incredibly easy to sideline, Elder
Hecata, i dont like them, some clans should never be able to become friends, giovanni and literally anyone else is that, wet blanket discharge, and even if they could become friends, i think its infinitely more interesting to have the giovanni and capadocian separate

Because the designers thought it sounded cool and didn’t bother to do research what it actually meant? It is far from the only case in World of Darkness books. Just look how they had to retcon what Lancea Sanctum really meant in Requiem. Originally, it was supposed to be “Holy Spear”, a good example of people not having the faintest idea of Latin (which is not their fault), but not making the effort to research (which is definitely their fault).
