Long ago, I’ve lived in Portsmouth for 3 years and 3 years in Western Branch until, we moved back to Texas. My last visit was summer 1991. I’ve driven around Battlefield Blvd and, I don’t recall that much. It’s been over 35 years when, I left.
@@johnfloyd2551 Hello, yes, in 1980 census was 80,000. When, I was at home from boarding school and it was pretty boring and Chesapeake didn’t have any public transportation to take me anywhere. ( buses in Churchland had limited routes) So in ‘82, I had to returned to Texas and my last visited on summer 1991 for 5 days and Williamsburg wasn’t free!
I believe you, it definitely had that small town feel once ago, but now it's getting close to 300,000 in pop.. alot of growth.. i64 has hov lanes.. 8 lanes wide.. other stretches of 64 are currently being widened.. there's the route 168 expressway that takes you toward the OBX. Not to mention alot of new roads and old roads widened, u.s. 17 which was a 2 lane highway that took you out of Chesapeake into NC is now built to near interstate standard into Carolina, (there is plans to convert route 17 from Chesapeake into NC to an interstate all the way to Raleigh, NC it will become interstate 87 when completed)..there's alot of growth in once rural areas, there is public transportation now.. but personally I think it sucks, I've seen alot of change growing up here.. it's become a little crowded in places.. Chesapeake currently ranks the 3rd largest in VA, it's still behind VA beach and Norfolk as far as infastructure.. but it's currently home for me, and it's really a safe place for it's size.. cost of living is shot way up though by the way. Well that sums it up,check it out sometime.. lol
We lived in Portsmouth from 1967 to 1970 (Quince Road in Churchland area), Chesapeake from 1970 to 1972 (Silverwood subdivision in Western Branch area - went to Western Branch Elementary), and Virginia Beach from 1981 to 1983 (graduated from Green Run High School). I went back for the first time in 2016 and enjoyed seeing my old houses and schools, Pembroke and Lynnhaven Malls, Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, and the beach.

Much has changed in Chesapeake since, the population has more than tripled since the 80s

Once you crossed Indian River Rd, you're entering Norfolk.
This is straight up Military Highway which starts in Chesapeake and runs through Norfolk.
