  • Refik Anadol opened his first major solo exhibition at Jeffrey Deitch in Los Angeles: Living Paintings. This showcase presents works created from California-related datasets. It explores the role of physical, public, virtual, and multidimensional environments in creating art. Using innovations like machine learning and visualization technologies, Living Paintings invite viewers to experience a new perspective on collective memories of urban life and nature through human-machine collaborations.
Anadol's AI Data Paintings and Sculptures offer something special: a dynamic connection between art, technology, and architecture. These pieces activate multiple senses and evoke a strong sense of belonging. At the core of Anadol's groundbreaking visualizations is data, which is used as a pigment to create an immersive experience. For this exhibition, Anadol is using environmental data such as wind speed, temperature and air pressure collected from sensors around Los Angeles; images of California's national parks (the largest dataset of its kind ever used for an artwork); and publicly available wind forecast data collected from the Pacific Ocean. Through machine learning algorithms and fluid dynamics, Anadol creates entirely new representations - ones that communicate stories to unknown worlds.
